I seen a few on here bashing cops before, NOW I know that there are bad cops out there. I have delt with a few when I was younger and more of a smart@S$ But now that I am older, wiser, more mature and have a few cop friends myself I would like to share the experince I had today. I was crusin over to Phat J's house today, he lives in the backwoods, nice long roads, lots of trees and 50 MPH two lane blacktop. I was humpin along at 65 right by a hidden cop. Few seconds later we are on a side road, me with my engine off, keys on the dash and hands on the stearing wheel. (Trust me this really makes a cop settled, they don;t wear body armour for nuthin ya know) He asks me how I am doin I say fine Sir and you. (being polite and calling a cop sir or mam'm isn't only smart it is common courtesy, remember how you feel when some one is rude too you when you are doing your job) He says "Good, can I see your license etc? Do you know why I pulled you over?" (Now I found that honesty really works with cops, belive me I am sure they have heard it all, it is like youse guys and gals with kids, you know when they lie. Belive me it helps in the long run) I said, "Yeah I was doin about 10 over in a 50 MPH." He chuckled a liuttle and said "Actually it was more like 15 over. How's you driving record?" I told him It has been a few years since my last Ticket and that I was in a accident in 2003 that was cited as not my fault. He said he would BRB. about 10 min after lookin up my info on the data base, he came back, said becareful out there and slow it down a tad. He then asked me about the Motorcycle parts I had in the back seat and we talked about Motorcycles for a few min. We said our good byes and went our seprate ways. So again being courteous, honest and polite pays off, no matter how much ya gotta pee LOL | ||

respect begets respect, thats the golden rule. those that have trouble typically see themselves as above a LEO, a ticket, or a butt-chewing. they may think they are pretending to be respectful, but cops know how to read people and detect lies. its life and death for them, they know it well. good story Spidy Ken | ||

I was nice and did much of what you did one time. Still got a $532 ticket for five over. There's more to the story which has to do with being from out of state but basically I was doing 5 over was passed by a car doing at least 15 over right in front of the cop and I got pulled. I was from out of state yet going to school in state so I got a speeding ticket and a $450 fine for not having a Utah dl or having my truck registered in Utah. Turns out the cop was wrong and I got the $450 part dropped. Still had to pay the $82 dollar fine despite the cop having a camera in the car that probably would have clearly shown me being passed and the passers plates. I was pretty mad that day. Oh yeah my insurance went up too. So yeah it pays to be nice to cops. | ||

Cops are like anyone else - there's cool ones and real head cases out there. I have some good friends that are police officers - even they say the same thing. | ||

Absolutely be polite; can't hurt but it could help. In NYC I've been told it's good policy when pulled over on a bike to Immediately remove your helmet and put it on the ground - alleviates any question whether you're going to try to run. Also sit still - dont' be searching through pockets or tank bag - who knows what you're looking for. Got pulled over for lane splitting by a NJ Trooper. Young guy - stern: "Why would you split lanes - it's too dangerous. If you got to do something, ride on the curb." kinda thing. Turned out to be a motorcyclist (I tried to engage him in some friendly conversation) and let me off with a warning. There are good ones and there are bad ones. But I've yet to be pulled over for no good reason ... Henrik | ||

Your right Spidey, Being nice is the only way to go with the police. See the shot below of fellow buellers in my car,  Mike, Drew and Mr. Grumpy (driver) were in the car, I was riding Mikes S3, Mark was on the Blackbird and Ozz was behind him, the car was behind us. We came around a bend at about 140kph ish in a 100kph zone and saw the cop in the distance pulled over in a speed trap. I immediately hit the brakes as did the other bikes. Grumpy decided to hit the gas, pass us and take the hit. This is where it gets funny - the bikes decide to keep going for a couple kms and then I realize. I have the registration and insurance in my wallet which is in my back pocket. I go back at which time the cop is having a friendly conversation (please help me here Grumpy). I go up to the officer and explain that I am the owner and give him the necessary documents. He told me he could have got the whole lot of us for speeding and other minor violations from having "Two unseatbelted Americans" in the back seat, an Englishman from France with a license that folds out like a piece of legal paper, to not having the insurance and registration in the vehicle." He then gave Grumpy a warning and let us go. I then politely asked if I could take a picture and when doing so he suggested I move out to the middle of the highway to get a better shot. The lights of the cruiser would slow the cars down and I'd be alright. We all had a laugh and he let us go. Being nice to the police does have its benefits. | ||

Just remember cops are normal people like the rest of us. An a-hole is an a-hole no matter what you dress him up in. So it's bad to label them when they are only doing there job. Think about what the police see as a result from speeding and reckless driving, death. So they are only doing their part to slow people down, and try to save some lives. | ||

"poof" Milwaukee has a couple of cases currently underway involving local officers, which taints the public view of all officers. Just like a few bad bikers will taint the public opinion of all bikers. Just like a few bad punk rockers will taint the public view of all punk rockers. Maybe I'll go find a copy of Serpico to watch this weekend, then follow it up with Police Academy, then migrate to the motorcycle genre films, and probably end up watching Where The Red Fern Grows just to bring the whole world back into perspective. Life is short, do what you can to lengthen it happily. And beware the Sausage Creature for you do not have to be on a bike to encounter him. Take care. Mike. | ||

Town cops around here are really great guys. The NH state troopers are another story, their job is about revenue generation. | ||

I forgot about that Mike, Had she opened the glove box it would have fell out!!!!! That was a good day - even when Drew was chasing me through Terra Nova Park averaging 150-160kph, 90-100mph. You should send him up here for a couple weeks this summer, I am sure Mark would show him around. Tell him he can use the DR650. Mark ditched her a couple months ago - she was certifiably crazy. That weekend is our anniversary so it makes it a little awkward to say "Guess what honey, I'm going on a cycle weekend with my better friends". | ||

in '95 I was doing 86 in a 55 out in the middle of nowhere in Bayfield county, WI. State trooper got me, I knew he did. So I pulled over probably before he even got his car started. He pulls behind me, I hand him my license, he then asks, "What's the hurry?". I replied, "Ummm.... Boring road?". He chuckles and replies, "Fair enough". Goes back in his car, and calls me back there after about 5 minutes. It turns out my registration was revoke because of a parking ticket my Ex-Wife had gotten 2 years earlier. He then asked me how *I* could afford a $30,000 SUV at the time. Being unshaven, in ripped up blue jeans, tiedied t-shirt, and hair 'bout down to my waist, I was betting he had been thinking I'm some sort of drug dealer. He let me off, with just a ticket for "missing" registration. He claimed that he was letting me off of the speeding ticket because I was honest, friendly, and he didn't have to chase me down. So yes, it does certainly help being honest and friendly with L.E.Os. | ||

And that would have been the truth because for all I know he might be looking for the guy that just robbed a bank. I'm sure he would have then asked me if I knew how fast I was going and I would then have very politely said "I prefer that you tell me, sir." Again, for all I know he might have been picking his nose as I went by and if I were to admit to 10 over, I would have gotten a 10 over ticket. | ||

Here in the Rochester NY area, we have, in no real order, the NY State Troopers, the Monroe County Sheriff Deputies, The Rochester City PD., and town police in 5 or 6 towns, all without leaving the county. The Troopers, Deputies & 4 out of 5 townies are all fairly honourable. The 5th, well, bad apples do indeed spoil the barrel. But even in the town with the worst rep, where I have witnessed actual crimes by police, the bulk of the Police in that town are decent guys. All the towns count on traffic revenue to help make the budget. In Mall country, tickets are issued to parked cars for sticker violations, ka-ching $$. In election years, ( every 2! ) crack downs take place, ( it varies what ) to boost images. Motorcycles here, are rare enough to be obvious. My Cyclone is Reactor Yellow. I could carry a burning flare on the roof of my minivan & be less noticed. I DO have stories, & I have got unfair tickets. Most of the stories are funny, and most cost me money. The Buffalo area guys can tell you where the speed trap is, where you go from a 40 zone to a 15 zone under an overpass. Don't take it all too hard, remember, they gotta pay Barney somehow. | ||

You can be as nice and polite as you want, but sometimes it doesnt matter and you still end up with a ticket. With that in mind... If you are honest about what law you broke and its on video there's no possible way of getting out of the ticket. So I prefer to not say anything, but yes, no sir, ma'am. | ||

I used to get stopped 3, 4, sometimes a half-dozen times a year for marginal traffic violations. Then I got a haircut. I've since been stopped twice in 10 years, both times while out of state. Don't try to tell me a LEO doesn't profile. (Ask my about driving our '71 VW bus sometime) Rob | ||

Ride safe, do the speed limit, make sure your vehicle is legal and you probably won't get stopped to start with. I have adopted the be polite rule also after several years of growing up. sometimes it works, sometimes not. The person who pulled you over packs a weapon and has the power to make your like miserable, be polite.I can honestly say I have never gotten a ticket I didn't deserve (I have have gotten some BS tickets) but I have have gotten off with a warning when I deserved a ticket. A traffic violation is a violation no matter how serious or marginal. that is their job to look for violations no matter how marginal. Be polite, it might just work in your favor. Besides these guys have a job that most of us wouldn't want to do for twice the pay if we did have to do it. If your nice maybe the next guy will have a better chance as a result. How would you like to get pulled over by a cop who just dealt with a real SOB, he probably won't be likely to give a break.Be polite, the world has too many rude, mean people.Instead of being the jerk the cop deals with, be the nice guy the cop deals with, it will payoff eventually. Kind of like when you see someone broke down and stop to help, someday you will be broke and someone will stop to help. | ||
