The Aussies are taking no prisoners. Amazing showing so far considering their population. Way to go blokes!

re: taking no prisoners.

Considering how the country was founded, I find extra humor in that quote.

Is that a "Penalist" joke?

Had an exchange student from Australia and that is what his folks jokingly referred to themselves as.

heheheh... Can you swim?

A croc or two in the pool might add some real excitement to the 1,500m.

"So..like, when do the Motorcycle Events happen"

Got canceled they decided it would just be another bunch of events the Aussies would take home medals from.

"Noticing the USA men's gymnastic uniforms... very err... gay looking." Can they swim maybe syncronised swimming may be a US medal chance

Well, when it was posted, they were first. I could have sworn they had them at 13 medals, now they show them with 12 (as of 2:28p.m. PST).

Either way, they're putting up the numbers.

Paul,
I think the little gymnasts are too small to swim. They might not be able to climb out of the pool and even in the shallow end the water is over their heads. I about fell on the floor when they interviewed one of them earlier. He sounded like one of Santas elves or the little people on the Wizard of Oz. LOL!

They are damn impressive though. The Japanese team is even more so. Amazing stuff. Makes me proud to be a human.

Why do they present them with a bouquet of flowers on the medal stand. I'd be like, "what the hell am I supposed to do with these" and probably toss them to someone in the audience.

Bob Costas rocks. He sure put Katy Kuric in her place during the opening ceremony. The Sudanese anthletes made their entrance and Kuric seeking to maintain her warm fuzzy delusional view of the world said something like... the Sudanese are trying to prevent genocide in their country. Bob matter of factly stated something like, I believe they are a little late if they wanted to prevent it. Then a brief silence followed a minute later by Kuric making a rude comment that "now I know why they call you Sponge Bob." I'd have slapped her.

Did anyone else see that?

Costas shames Pat O'Brian the non-prime time host.

I suppose you'll do likewise without trying many things, but then if you had, your life might just be even fuller. If nothing else, golf will teach one humility.

I'm no golf enthusiast. Dropped the CC membership years ago. Haven't been out once this year nor last year either. Just noticing how very strange it is that one of the world's most wildly popular individual sports is not represented in the Olympics. No bowling either? Or is that a winter sport?

Last time around, inline speed skating, distance and track, was cast aside to allow ballroom dancing in the summer olympics. Houston had a contender at the time, Chad Hedrick.

Golf should be in there too, I agree, despite my personal opinion that it ruins a perfectly good walk.

Very much like the gymnasitics we've been watching, one person must be very good in many events.

A story of an Olympic heartbreak.

As a former shooter who's crossed paths with him, Lance's tough break resonates with me. Can you imagine how many more heartbreaks there are than successes?

Gotta love the individual all-around gymnastics results. The win by Paul Hamm will go down in history as one of the epic comebacks of all time.

Carly Patterson, the little girl from Allen, Texas was just plain awesome winning gold in the womens (girls really) all-around gymnastics competition.

"Makes me proud to be a human"

Zactly!

Golf? er, I'm not sure I miss it, nor am I sure that badmitten or ping pong are olympic sports, but, hey, they didn't ask me

Biathalon is cool too, but it's a winter sport

I have never ever even been close to being olympic level at anything, but the story about the shooter tugs at the heart strings . . . . I was totally ignorant of the revenue generating possibilities --

Let's be sensible, let's drop the Decathlon because it's not a real sport, and replace it with the Trampoline.

Seriously, WHAT IN THE NAME OF ZEUS, was the Olympic committee thinking of when they decided to drop the Decathlon? I consider Decathletes and Triathletes some of best athletes in the world.

How 'bout we find another formula for the "avg. medal score" column? IMHO, 3 silvers (AUT) is a higher national achievement than 1 gold (UAE).

I think anything that happens indoors should be a part of the Winter games. That would include men / women Basketball, Gymnastics and Volleyball. If you can't do it outdoors, then you can't do it here. I'll make an exception for swimming and diving 'cuz water is really supposed to be outdoors, but hey. BTW: Ain't the point of a race to get from point A to point B fastest? What's with all the different swimming strokes? And how about that Hop, Skip, & Jump thing in T & F.? Race Walking? Can we say Bye Bye to all of that crap?

In the same vain, I say we put two guys in a ring and let them sort things out. Who cares if the winner does Judo/Tae Kwan Do/Wrestling or Boxing?

I'd drop Volleyball altogether in favor of Beach Volleyball. There's only room for one Volley and Beach is better.

Bicycling has got to go. Too equipment dependant. By extension, I say we drop the Triathlon in favor of an Open Water Swim / Cross Country Run event. (Blake: When the going gets tough, the sprinters quit! A race doesn't really start 'till the 9Km point. So there!)

Speaking of equipment: Trap Shooting is so out of here. Air pistols????????????? Archery might make the cut just because it's old but I'm not sure.

ANYTHING (EVERYTHING) That's done in unison is gone.

Horse is a game of Basketball. Not an Olympic athlete.

Anything that smax of the X-Games is recent history. i.e. Mt. Bike Downhill - gone.

If it's subjectively judged, it's not working for me.

If the number of people involved in a particular sporting event is greater than the number of people willing to watch it then it's NOT an Olympic caliber sport.

Besides that, if any particular athlete makes more than a million per year then he / she can't take part in the Olympics. No Alan Iverson, no Vanessa Williams, no soccer stud, no nobody that makes a million per.

JMHO. Thank you.
