I think in the sportbike world 750 fours equal 1000 twins. 1000 fours equal 1200 twins.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but that is common perception based on what have become traditional racing classes. It is also a good matchup in CCs for stock sportbike comparrisons.

This is why 600 vs. 1125 is getting so much pushback, right or wrong.

Nothing stops people from buying Ducati. Who doesn't want to own one? Ducati is established, Buell isn't on the same level. Maybe someday, but not now.

If I had the chance to buy 848 or an 1125r, I'd buy the 848. If I had to chance to buy GSX-R 600 or an 1125r, I'd buy the Buell. That's just me.

The other problem is that for some odd reason people "percieve" that the Buell is a freight train in the straights. Goofy know nothings like Scott Russell make comments about it.

Agreed 100%. Where it gets tougher is with the GSXR 1000 vs. the 1125. I'd take the 1125, but damn those 1000cc fours make some serious power.

Perception by some may be 1125cc vs 600cc= the 1125 should kick the crap out of the 600.

Reality is only 1 1125r has podiumed, even though there are some very skilled riders on the others.


Perception is someone's tainted opinion. Reality is cold hard fact. If you have an open mind, perception can be changed.

Bottom line is, the bikes are pretty evenly matched.

It's not his first "after contact" victory this year.
Just saying, he knows where to put that "heavy" bike when he wants his opponent to bounce like a pinball.
And that wheelie was a result of him looking back and loosing the front end over the crest, simultaneously.
Young cowboy needs to settle down a bit, and I hope he does and goes on to enjoy a long racing career.

The wheelie was pure exhibition of skill and showmanship of Slick. Nothing else. It was intentional, controlled--for the fans or maybe for Hacking? I mean even the Buell haters have to give Slick props for those ballsy passes, wheelies and burnouts. Anyone notice when enough was enough he calmly tapped the rear brake to bring the front down?


I guess that power slide coming around the last corner was an accident too?

Triumph and Ducati are't competing in the 600 class.

Tell that to the guy riding the Triumph at Barber and the Ducati at Mid-Ohio.

They don't have a big showing, but they are competing in the class.


If you don't have the bike for the class, don't run it. If I4 is the technology to win, why would you do something else?

Because if we are all running EXACTLY the same bike, what's the fun in that? Sounds like NASCAR. If the IL4 guys want to run a series of ONLY IL4s, they are welcome to do so. AMA isn't it.

Are these same folks bad mouthing the Suzuki RR being created under the same rules?


I'd love to see Buell compete with a factory team in Superbike. Compete with Ducati and Suzuki on the same terms.

They will be there as well. Will the 200cc advantage STILL mean that Buell is cheating? I seem to remember quite a bit of bitching about Ducati having a 200cc advantage.

There are now about 250,000 folks who didn't know what a Buell was 5 months ago. Even, and for the sake of discussion I'm giving you 100% of them hate Buell, the fact is nearly every intenet board an magazine, regardless of brand affiliation, is lit of with BUELL talk.. . . . guess what that does for Buell?

For the science and details the are several sources.

I'd suggest starting with EFFECTIVE PUBLIC RELATIONS by Scott Cutlip. This book may be aging, going on 50 years old, but if you want to understand the basics, this is a good place to start.

If you want something a bit lighter and fun, try Can We Do That?! Outrageous PR Stunts That Work by Peter Shankman. Imagine if Erik Buell stole the Ducati demo truck and drove it cross country while being chased. : ) Nah. .

If you want more theory, there was a pretty good article in the Winter 2009 MIT Sloan Management Review call "What People Want Next . . and how to predict it".

Bottom line is the racing program is changing Buell. Even though the wins are the icing on the cake, it's the entire "program". The Professional Race Shop Team, Danny Eslick's talent and effervescent personality, and the support of the Geico, RMR and Rossmeyer folks.

Love it or hate it . . . . Buell is NOW on LOTS OR RADAR SCREENS.

I, for one, am thrilled.

somehow all the rule changing has something to do with money just like everything else. how many dollars is yamaha or suzuki paying for those rule changes.......


to clear up the engine thing, look at when 4 strokes broke into the motocross scene, we all hated them because they were faster right........well when ricky carmicheal would climb on 2 stroke and smoke all the new guys it was clear that the bike had no advantage.

i say with any racing, the only setup that should be allowed is suspension. the machines should be indentical to really bring out rider skill.

What do you want to bet than when Buell does good on the race track that SBP hits go up and the more negative they are the more they go up. Sounds like a good business plan at least in the short term. It's kind of like watching a train wreck.

People would not bitch if Eslick did not pull so hard in the straights. I don't think anyone would care at all.

It doesn't help with Scott Russell's commentary on it, not in a derogotory way at all, just talking about how damn fast the Buell is, pointing out where it is pulling the rest of the field. If you are not familiar with The Chief, look him up online. He hasn't been out of the game for too long, and was one hell of a racer. One of my racing heros.

Displacement doesnt automatically equal horsepower or torque. Does a Sportster1200 have the same power as a XB12? Was the XB competitive in AMA Thunderbike? The answer to both questions is NO

Remember when Dodge came out with their revolutionary new pickup designs (ca. mid-to-late 90's?) The focus groups were divided equally at 50% each for love or hate. Dodge knew that they had a winner at that very moment.

At least I ain't bought into NAS-CRAP's racing. All you fine race fans can now ware your new NASCAR hats proudly.

The true motorcycle race fans have voted with their wallets, by not going to NAS- BIKE. Every event has less fans than the past. Why? Its cheep watered down moto entertainment. Who wants to see bikes go slower than last year? NAS-CRAP fans of coarse.

Hp/torque advantage. power to weight advantage. We have a ringer! Parity with 600's. How sad, American superbike indeed!

Hey why not do something like in drag racing? Its called bracket racing. Slow dogs get a head start, everybody gets to the finish line at the same time, thats fair. If the poor little factories/priveteres cant compeet with the big boys get them to bend the rules for the home town dog.

Wow! It's surprising how some hateful types feel so threatened by a formula racing class where 130 RWHP 360 lb 600 cc IL4 macines that rev to 17,000 rpm compete against 140 RWHP 380 lb liter clas twins that rev to 11K rpm.

The Buell "XB was't competitive in AMA Thunderbike"? Uh, how many races does a bike need to win to be considered "competitive".

Never let facts get in the way of a good Buell hating rant?
