The internet's a great thing if you're bored.

Look at this bit of craziness! And you thought your 1125 was fast!

OK, so not to threadjack here, but it cracks me up how this is the only forum I regularly visit that has this kind of stuff in it. The other ones...

"Dood so I'm thinking about putting a car tire on the back of my bike to get better mileage!!!"

Does that say something about Buellers?

And, btw, that is one of my favorite episodes of Mythbusters. The other, of course, being the one where they blew up the concrete truck!!!

Some really great entertainment:

Mythbusters OFFICIAL Youtube site (click)

Since I don't own a TV, I get caught up on the really cool shows when I have to travel on work - and on the 'Net.

I love that episode : )

Best TV show ever, but that clip sucks because Kari isn't in it.

You need to look up John Stapp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stapp

He was a guy that tested extreme G forces for air safety.

He rode one many of those rocket sleds and experienced over 46 g's in the process.

I don't want to post it here (graphic) but there is a famous photo of him after one of his record runs. The blood vessels in his eyes burst making him look like a blood thirsty creature.

And Joseph Kittinger! He flew the chase plane for Stapp's rocket-sled tests, but that isn't what he's known for. He's the stud who jumped out of a balloon gondola at 102,000 feet, a record likely to stand for quite some time. That jump also made him the only human to ever break the sound barrier in free-fall. He still lives in Florida, I believe. So if any of you in those parts ever see an old guy walking down the street with an enormous pair of brass ones in a wheelbarrow, be sure to tip your hat to him.

I didn't know you could break the sound barrier in free fall, thought you hit terminal velocity around 120 or something like that.

Still needs big ones to jump from that high up anyway.

Speed of sound varies with density. Because the density of the air up at that altitude is so low, his actual drag in free-fall is extremely low (his speed is high) - he CAN break the sound barrier in free-fall.

Well the Air Force won't say he broke the speed of sound. BUT if you read anything about him you'd have to know he is Da Man!

Quite so. I, like many, had heard and believed that he had exceeded the barrier. He "only" made it to Mach 0.9. Still... wow!

Here's another nice link to one of his bios.
