Today I took a modified tour of the Capital drive powertrain plant. If you did not know, this plant is where they make buell and sporty engines.

The tour guide was kind enuf to let us know why we had to do a modified tour.

She explained "We cant let you see the final assembly line because that are making a new engine"

She said she could not say which or both of the lines will be getting a new lump.

New buell lump???

Interesting. Wonder what "new" engine both the XB or Sporty would be getting.

It hasn't changed since 1903.

Buell just came out with the 1125, not that I know shit, but I would guess a big change to the Sportster. Didn't the Sportster get a big update just after the XB came out?

What was so wrong with the VR1000 race engine?
Could it have been made street-able?
Weren't a number made street-legal and available for sale overseas to meet homologation requirements?

Of course, as my better half often reminds me, my memory isn't what it used to be...

If the "new" engine is water cooled, I would think they would make that in Kansas City along side the V-Rod.

We were shown some new machines and robots. I could not see what they were doing. The guide said "These are new machines, I am not sure what they do." Maybe she is unsure or if she said what they did, It might let the cat out of the bag.

If you are in the area for homecoming be sure to stop by. It interesting even with the modified tour. It was like a 30 minute ride from Buell HQ.

The VR1000 motor made too much noise to pass EPA noise regs even if it had a 0 decibel muffler.

Yes it was homologated overseas, in Poland (no kidding).

The VR motor also ran about $60,000.00. And wasn't made to run more than a race at a time between re-builds.

"If the "new" engine is water cooled, I would think they would make that in Kansas City along side the V-Rod."

V Rod production workers are either being re-assigned to the Sporty line or layed off down there.

Remember, HD is moving everything you saw at the Captial Dr plant, up the road to Menomonee Falls. They may have been covering empty spots. HD has had round the clock shifts making this move. Its supposed to be done by 2010.

>>>What was so wrong with the VR1000 race engine?

The VR100 motor was crap from day one and had TONS of problems (about 9 pages in the report I saw) that made it a crummy race motor and not even a candidate for a street motor.

I'd think outside aircooled.

Outside aircooled would likely require a new chassis as well. Not saying it's impossible, but a lot more of the plant would have been off limits if that was the case.

This is interesting news... I'm excited for August.

What I think is more likely is the sportsters may get a revised bottom-end, much like the XBs got last year. Perhaps the cam cover changed in appearance.

They may change the internals, but I'll bet they don't change the appearance. The Sportsters went to a flywheel mounted timing sensor a couple of years ago, but Willie G. said they specifically kept a fake ignition sensor cover on the right side case because they wanted to maintain the "expected" appearance.

Personally, I think they should drop that and put a fake magneto on top of the cover to restore the really traditional appearance.
