Or is that not politically expedient?

Bingo!

Chellem - I agree 100% with your last post, but lacked the ability to put it as eloquently as you have.

Let me get this straight: The poll said 22 percent of whites blah-blah-blah and 20 percent la-de-dah.

That means that almost 80 percent of whites don't have serious race-related issues when it comes to voting for president.

Yes, racism exists in this country, every bit as much as regionalism exists (I'm a Yankee living in the South. Many Southerners have not forgotten the War, why should the great-great grandsons of slaves forget it?) but the fact that a black man and a woman are bona fide presidential candidates ought to tell us a lot about the real state of race in this country.

It's not as bad as we lead ourselves to believe and not as good as it can be.

Last week I told a kid . .. "you could grow up to be President".

He started crying and saying . . . "but I didn't do anything wrong".

This year, I have what I feel is an obligation to my Father, Grandfather and his Father to vote for Obama."

"What I am saying is, if I don't then all the times I've told my children, "Yes, you too can aspire to be the President of the USA" would have been a lie, because you can't expect anyone to do for you what you won't do for yourself."

What about a responsibility to your children, grandchildren, and their children to vote for a candidate that can prepare the country for success during their generations? Can Obama guarantee all of the freedom, opportunities, and securities that you want for your family in years to come?

In 1862, a newspaper editor called on Lincoln at the White House. He told Lincoln it was he who had suggested his nomination for the Presidency. Lincoln told the editor he was on his way out to see the Secretary of war,the editor seeking to prolong his visit asked if he might accompany the President on his walk? Lincoln said "Come along then" and they were off. When they arrived at the destination, Lincoln said to the editor that he would have to see Mr. Stanton alone and for the editor to please excuse him. As Lincoln walked away he stopped and turned thinking this send off was perhaps a bit harsh. Lincoln then took the Editors hand and said, " Goodbye,I know you suggested my nomination , but you should not trouble yourself over it! I forgive you."

"40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks"

Er... I don't remember being asked? Pretty bold statement, and I seriously doubt they have the data to back it up.

Racism is here to stay for a long time I know many people that will not voice thier openion in public because of the potilical correction thing but you know how they will vote when the curtain is closed. And as for being 1/2 white remember here in the south many kids are taught that 1/8 black is all black. (my 2 cents worth.)

That also works in reverse ,take it from someone who was either a "nigger" or "cracker" growing up depending on where he happened to be at the moment.

I can't even imagine.

I still remember my friend in HS who was half white and half black telling me he was going to be checking "white" from that point forward.

PK -- if you believe that ANY candidate can guarantee anything of value, I belive you may be mistaken --

me, I've come to the conclusion that the holder of the highest office in the land makes, really, very little difference, long term, to what happens in the country -- the real differences between the parties has shrunk to the point of comedy, the prez certainly can't "fix" the economy or energy crisis (though he/she could certainly make both worse), in fact, the only areas where the prez has a huge impact are the makeup of the Supreme Court (which has managed NOT to turn the country into either Nai Germany nor a Commie Pinko haven for nasty people, regardless of what folks fer wringing their hands over), and military adventures -- even in the military situations, the prez wouldn't have nearly the impact he's had over the last 30 years of congress were to grow a pair

GL,

I can't even imagine.

It has been an interesting journey, I grew from what seemed a never ending nightmare to a young teen who had contempt for people in general to a man who tries to look at people from their perspective as well as my own. Hate is an emotion bereft of any reason. the best one can do is to understand what events, what perspectives fostered the thing and work to cut off it's lines of supply. I like to think that I have stolen a march or two in my day.I know my children will be stronger for my experience.

That's why i've chosen nw to vote for neither.BOTH parties are OWNED by large corporate interests.McCain sold his soul long ago to Jerry Falwell.Obama is the new Dukakis, merely a word processor.

I like the sound of "Consumer advocate" in Ralph Nader.

Jeremy says "Both" sides of the aisle dislike Ralph, and i can see why. He'd expose all the hands(corporate) in our senator's pockets

And the 1/8" comment,i find repulsive

If you think Nader and Bob Barr should be in the next debates, to so then help out:

So here's the task:

To get in the right frame of mind. Think happy thoughts: puppies, flowers, dancing leprechauns and lower taxes.
Pick up the phone and call 866-675-2008.
Hit 6 to speak with a campaign volunteer.
Once connected, politely deliver the following message:

"Hi my name is __________ and I'm calling to request that Senator Obama invite minority party candidates Bob Barr and Ralph Nader to participate in the upcoming presidential debates. Could you please leave this message with your campaign manager, David Plouffe?

or email
jb@debates.org the executive director of the Commission on Presidential Debates

Cowboy your statement is correct. I was trapped at home one day with the flu and watched Geraldo by mistake. His topic that day was racial profiling and the entire audience was black. In the crowd there was a very light skinned person whose only sign of "blackness" was her only slightly leaning facial features. Geraldo questioned her why she considered herself black since she was obviously a higher ratio Anglo-Saxon. She replied that it only takes a little bit of black to make you black but you have to all white to be white. He didn't get it and neither did I. I'm part Miami Indian but not enough to claim it as my primary race or heritage.

Race is definitely a touchy topic for some. I really don't care about color or race. Integrity, honesty, a vision that doesn't include socialism and a full understanding of the Constitution are some of the things I'm looking for. Obama has none of these

In 1705 Virginia defines any "child, grandchild, or great grandchild of a Negro" as a mulatto. In 1866, the state decrees that "every person having one-fourth or more Negro blood shall be deemed a colored person." In 1910, the percentage is changed to 1/16th. Finally in 1924, the Virginia Racial Purity Act defines Black persons as having any trace of African ancestry - the infamous "one-drop" rule.

That's from a recent PBS article on race. If I remember correctly, in Missouri, before the Civil War, it was 1/32nd "Negro blood" that determined whether or not you were white.

We've come a long way. We all have prejudices (I'm not sure about Honda riders, for instance), but we're working on it as a country.

When I first voted in 1976 the idea of a black man ever running for president and having a chance of winning was unimaginable.

Take a moment to be proud and then get back to work.

Thanks Rainman...

In 1973 my mother married a half Polish half Irish man, a few months later my brother was born. He has always been considered black.

In Virginia, the one drop rule has always been the general consensus.

"40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks"

I persoanlly "hold at least a partly negative view of"...
whites,

blacks,

Christians,

Muslims,

my best friend,

my wife,

my dog,

my motorcycle,

myself,

and the entire human race.

That asinine race-baiting poll finding is disgusting and a sham, entirely void of any actual revelation about anything.
