There are various things that keep me awake at night these days... When will the 1125CR arrive in Australia? Will I ever be able to get my knee down? Why did the indicator circuit in my Valiant short out on monday morning, melting the oil gauge line and filling the car with smoke!? How can I stop the muffler on the X1 blowing all the baffling out?

But more than all these things, there's something perplexes me, baffles me, nags at me... I know this is four wheels related, not two, but there are some smart minds on BadWeb, so I ask you, so I can sleep at night,

Who is THE STIG???

When will the 1125CR arrive in Australia?
Between September, and February.
Will I ever be able to get my knee down?
Yes, but careful what you ask for there.
Why did the indicator circuit in my Valiant short out on monday morning, melting the oil gauge line and filling the car with smoke!?
It's an old Chrysler, it's what they do.
How can I stop the muffler on the X1 blowing all the baffling out?
Find the root cause, in this case it would be the engine running, keep the engine from running, problem solved.
Who is THE STIG???
Why this is, of course!

Hope I've helped to ease your mind.
Sleep well upside down one!

From Wiki...

The identity of Black Stig was revealed to be Perry McCarthy when his book Flat Out, Flat Broke was published in 2003. McCarthy is a former Formula 1 driver and test driver for the Benetton, Arrows and Williams teams, and also tested for BMW F1.[2][13]

The identity of White Stig has not been officially revealed. In a Winter Olympics special episode of Top Gear, The Stig was shown doing a ski jump using a snowmobile. According to the Swedish tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet, the driver performing the ski jump stunt was Dan Lang, a Swedish snowmobile cross driver.[17] In January 2006, a Daily Express article reported that Julian Bailey was The Stig.[18] The Stig has talked in an interview with a Dutch TV Channel, Veronica where he had a distinctly English accent.[19] Both Darren Turner and Ben Collins have been linked to the role, with The Scotsman quoting Susie Stoddart as stating "OK, there are two Stigs. One is Ben Collins and the other is Darren Turner. How do I know? I'm a racing driver, nothing stays a secret for long in motorsport."; [20]

Collins has also been the subject of online speculation, although he has denied this, stating "those rumours are absolute nonsense" in the Western Daily Press newspaper.[21] Collins was also referred to in the Health and Safety Executive report into the accident of Richard Hammond, named as a person "who worked closely with Top Gear as a high performance driver and consultant". However the report did not go so far as to name him as the Stig.[21][verification needed][22] In January of 2007 Auto Trader also commented on the possibility that Collins is The Stig, noting online speculation after "his appearance on Top Gear as part of a parachuting stunt", but also commenting that "(a)t 1.87m in height (over six feet) he could be too tall for the Stig’s racing suit." They quoted William Hill as offering odds of 8/1 against Collins being The Stig, with Russ Swift the 2/1 favourite.[23] While Top Gear was filming in Zolder on 22 May 2008 doing a future segment, a camera crew shot footage claiming that they pictured The Stig as test driver Tim Schrick,[24] though further evidence has refuted that claim, including Tim Schrick racing the Stig as part of the Germany vs England feature in Episode 6 of Series 11.[25][26]

Both Russ Swift[27] and Perry McCarthy[2] have claimed that there is more than one driver who plays the role of The Stig.

Mark Webber with an "I AM THE STIG" T-shirt presented to him by Jeremy.

The show has alluded to The Stig with Formula 1 drivers that visit the show. In the 26 June 2005 episode, Damon Hill appeared as the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car". When asked directly by Clarkson if he was The Stig, Hill played on the fact that he may be The Stig, but then denied it.[28] Mark Webber was interviewed on 31 July 2005 and at the conclusion of his lap, Clarkson presented him with an "I AM THE STIG" T-shirt.

When former F1 driver Nigel Mansell appeared on the show, Jeremy Clarkson noted that The Stig theorised that the Suzuki Liana (the show's "reasonably priced car" at the time) could achieve a 1:44 time on the track.[29] Mansell proved the Stig's theory by lapping in a time of 1:44.6; The Stig subsequently posted a lap-time of 1:44.4 in the Liana. During the review of Jenson Button's lap, Clarkson commented that he, as did most of the other F1 drivers, took very different racing lines from The Stig's. Button commented that "...obviously, The Stig isn't a Formula One Driver, then." to which Clarkson replied with "Might be."; [30]

Although The Stig does talk with celebrities while preparing them for their "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" lap times, he is never shown talking on screen, and in Top Gear magazine articles he is portrayed as unable or unwilling to talk. Clarkson has written that The Stig is not permitted to talk on screen because any opinion he might voice on cars would be rubbish.[31]

When will the 1125CR arrive in Australia?
Between September, and February.
>>> Cool : )

Will I ever be able to get my knee down?
Yes, but careful what you ask for there.
>>> I know what you mean. I'm not in a rush to achieve this, I like my skin : ) Time for a riding course and some track days I think. It's been a long time since I've come off, and I'd like to keep it that way (touch wood!).

Why did the indicator circuit in my Valiant short out on monday morning, melting the oil gauge line and filling the car with smoke!?
It's an old Chrysler, it's what they do.
>>> Correct.

How can I stop the muffler on the X1 blowing all the baffling out?
Find the root cause, in this case it would be the engine running, keep the engine from running, problem solved.
>>> Ahhh, now I know what I've been doing wrong!

Who is THE STIG???
Why this is, of course!
>>> LOL! I said smart MINDS on BadWeb, not smart... : D

The Wiki stuff seems to rule a few people out, though Ben Collins being named as a person "who worked closely with Top Gear as a high performance driver and consultant" seems the closest to something definitive. But is he too tall?

He seems to be very fast, very comfortable in jumping in any sort of car and driving it quick, and I would have thought he'd need a fair bit of free time to do all the stuff for Top Gear, so could it be someone older? A retired driver?

It's not Alonso:
The Stig impresses F1 champ Alonso
Mon 14 Jul, 09:34 AM

Former double world champion Fernando Alonso has dealt a blow to rumours he is the mysterious character known in motoring circles as 'The Stig'.

The Stig, who always wears plain white racing gear and helmet, is an anonymous and highly-skilled test driver for the BBC television motoring programme, Top Gear.

It is often speculated that Alonso is The Stig. But the rumour exited the realms of possibility during the recent British Grand Prix weekend, when The Stig actually appeared in the Silverstone paddock.

He performed some laps of the damp Northamptonshire circuit at the wheel of a two-seater Formula One car - watched on closely by none other than Alonso.

"Whoever's in that car is a seriously good driver," the 19-time Grand Prix winner is quoted as telling the Top Gear website.

"I've no idea who he is, but he's definitely ex-F1," Alonso added.

The Stig's passenger, a lottery winner, bought the ride in a charity auction for $70,000.

"Some say that his genitals are on upside down. And that if he could be bothered, he could crack the Da Vinci Code in 43 seconds. All we know is, he's called The Stig."
or...

"Some say his heart ticks like a watch, and that he can smell corners. All we know is, he’s called The Stig."

...there is more than one driver who plays the role of The Stig.

This is probably the answer. Different drivers for different types of driving.

Who knows? The mystery is fun!

The only problem with being more than one stig is that the times are supposed to compare evenly. The even make notes on wet conditions.
I know it isn't scientific and is a fun show, but the comparison times on track should be at least the same "stig," maybe they use other stigs for different goals.

The one at Moroso in West Palm Beach was hilarious, fat stig. Then there was African Stig, but those were obvious jokes.

It was embarrassing though when after traveling some really bad Miami areas safely, they were almost killed in Alabama for the stuff painted on their cars.

Stig in the pool, did anyone else find the chick swimming in the helmet mildly disturbing?

Maybe it was that the helmet made her look like a little kid. Maybe it was supposed to be a little girl stig and not a girlfriend stig.

Anyway... stig smashes the apple in the apex with the beemer.

The mercedes ate it's tires in 35 miles.

I hate how it is edited for America, we are not mature enough for the c*ock-o-meter because c*ck doesn't just mean rooster.

Did I say edited? I meant sanitized, ruined, brought to the level of a child, very Orwellian.

And apparently c*ock is filtered here too.

I sure do love being protected from WORDS, what is next.

George Carlin said it, there are no bad words.

Funny thing is that it is the censors who immediately think penis when they see when common sense tells you they are using it as rooster as it often is.
Like, "C*ck of the walk."

That is why I love the Jimmy Kimmel tributes to the FCC.

One of the best ones

If that's him and he was 50 in 1996....that makes him 62....seems reasonable...also says that he was active in racing til 2006 and shows a win in 07 classic rally with co-driver.

Rally drivers are the best when you think about it.

Meh... they're the most rounded I think, but not generally the fastest in other forms of racing.

I don't know that "The Stig" is Blomqvist... but I seem to remember that he and Clarkson were friends. In any case I'm quite sure that the name "The Stig" is a nod to Blomqvist.

Also... if you want a test driver that should be able to set fast laps in any car in any condition you choose a rally driver. That's what "The Stig" does....

A nod to Blomqvist sounds right, though the name "The Stig" comes from the original black suited Stig, now known to be Perry McCarthy.

Could it be The Hoff? Maybe it's Chuck Norris?

Editing and taming for the masses is a shame, but one of the things I really enjoy about Top Gear is it's sense of humour!
For example the diesel Beemer sponsored by Larsen's Biscuits and Peniston Oils ; )

Some say he once, preposterously, had an affair with John Prescott, and that he has a tattoo of Buzz Aldrin on his thigh. All we know is, he's called The Stig.

Some say his voice can only be heard by cats, and that he has named every single blade of grass surrounding the Top Gear test track. All we know is, he's called The Stig.

Some say that he once punched a horse to the ground.
(It could be Chuck Norris!)

Some say he appears on high-value stamps in Sweden, he"s illegal in 17 U.S. states.

Some say he was raised by wolves, and that if given an important job to do, he'll skive off and play croquet. All we know is, he's called The Stig.

I really hope the identity of the Stig stays a mystery. It makes the show more interesting.

The big question is who will play the stig on Top Gear USA?
Adam Corolla mentioned they will have a stig.

OLIVER!!!

Adding drain holes to the other cars with elephant guns!

The mini car is a classic, in the elevator and when he cruises behind the on-air news readers.

Or sitting in the car at the "meeting" of
environmentally responsible use of the copy machines in a ....

Guy turns him around into traffic at the end.

And it is on monday BBC America, 8pm newest followed by 9pm last week's show and repeated at 11p and 12am. Eastern Time.

They sometimes have it on comcast on demand BBC.

arse biscuits and penis- that was classic.

I was thinking again how the Stig was passing people at night with his tinted visor on- he has the track memorized that well.

Hope they do half as well on the U.S. version but time will tell.

They seem to be calming down a bit on the original, like the BBC wants more info and less fun. Then there was the Rolls into the pool, waving as he went by.

Good info.

The one exec-producer has "smash lab" on his resume with mythbusters.

Smash lab was so obviously an attempt to milk mythbusters that it insulted me and I avoided the show.

Then I caught part of an episode and saw how awful it was, they literally tried to clone the mythbuster team for another show.

Why don't they get that sometimes you just strike gold with personalities and they gel but that you can't just copy the "personality type" and expect it to work.

Their version of Kari was lame, then there was some idiot with a faux hawk hair do- it just sucked.

At least with Corolla, they have a chance, he really is Jezza Jr. - they do have that same type of presence.
