So I'm riding home from some errands this afternoon, riding my favorite (and only) decent twisties around. I come out of a blind corner and there's an old iron head sporty clunkin along. crap, well there's an intersection coming, what are the odds he's goin the same way as me. well he does. as we're farting along 10 mph under the speed limit. I notice that he's got temp tags, issued on 6/21. This bike is not in good shape at all, rattles, backfires, all the std iron head fun. I notice the helmet is a 70's vintage hand me down. I brilliantly deduct that this is a new rider, time to blow by him. As I move to the left side of our lane, I catch a glimpse of this guy in his mirror. He's grinning from ear to ear, probably having more fun than he's had since his childhood. After seeing the joy on his face, I just couldn't pass him. I dropped back a little, and followed him the rest of the way until we got to the four lane. Sometimes it's better to putt along behind a happy rider. Just thought I'd share. | ||

Normally I do pass, but this guy was obviously so new, having the time of his life and in his mind he was the coolest guy in town. Just couldn't do it. Hopefully, as he gains experience and such he'll "pass it on" to another noobie someday. | ||

I have a story like of like that only I was on the receiving end. I’d had my Blast about 3 weeks and decided that the Saturday morning sky was just a little to blue to be indoors. I hopped on the Blast and headed up to where the traffic isn’t very bad and we have what passes for a country road around here. It even had some good twists and turns in it. Anyway, I run the length of this road which is about 5 or 6 miles. Not challenging the bike at all but it was my first time doing anything other than city streets. When I got to the end, I just said “Dang that was fun" then turned around to do it again. This time I’m really leaning and blazing though the turns. Maybe screaming along at 30 or even 35 mph…lol. I get to the end of the road, stop for the stop sign and realize there’s some one behind me. I look back and there are 6 or 7 BIG sport bikes. I mean real super bike kind of rides. Now I’m feeling like a moron cause I know I held these guys up. They could have gone through these turns at least twice as fast as I just did. Anyway, I pull over to the side of the road and motion these guys around so I don’t slow them down anymore. The ride leader pulls up next to me on this green Ninja and stops to look at me, Without saying a word, he just smiles, give me a thumbs up and drives off, followed by the other bikes. Instead of laughing at me and making me feel like a geek, that one little gesture made me feel like a million buck. I don’t know who he was, but my thanks to him. | ||

You realize that it's highly distracting to a novice rider, to be followed by another rider. Passing, safely, and wide, the newbie, and waving him a big greeting is often the safer bet. last thing a new rider wants is some phantom motorcyclist lurking behind her/him | ||

Well personally I powder my arse heavilly and consume massive amounts of fiber before every ride in anticipation of passing a squid and flatuating a huge plume of noxious Squid INK as I pass him but I must remember not to do this with my leathers on as it fills my helmet and I can not see | ||

Cheers to him for getting an iron head out on the road after gawd knows how long that has set in somebodys garage, basement, back storeroom, barn .... Nothin like Ol Milwaukee  | ||

Had I tried to go around, I wouldn't have left him much room, most likely partially in a turn. When I decided against this, I backed off a good bit. Had I gone around him, the 2 or 3 cagers on my azz woulda been on his. | ||

LET THE IRONHEADS BE!!! As an Ironhead owner, I say "thanks", lol. Fun bikes, hair raising ride, won't come close to doing what your Buell can. | ||

I would do the same for someone on an older bike or maybe a some one on sport bike with fresh tags. Definitely anybody on a buell, but I draw the line with new harleys. Something about all that shiny chrome and $1000 worth of "free" leather and tshirts they got with the price they over paid gets me all riled up. I'll dust them in a heart beat and never give them the satisfaction of the finger or look back. | ||

Whenever I come up on another bike, I will fall into pattern at a safe distance behind. I will ride "with" them so to speak for a ways before passing. Sometimes they are plodding along and will wave me by. Sometimes they want to play! Sometimes they just ignor me. In my opinion, it's rude to just blow by them. Good job Badlionsfan! | ||

Things may be a little different than you are used to out here in The Great Pacific Northwest. There are folks or groups of folks that are more than happy to teach a squid some manners. (if they catch him!) | ||

You are correct, Tramp. For me to say that passing a guy who was clearly an unexperienced, slower rider would not constitute squidly behavior. I stand corrected. | ||

passing anyone nervously riding below the speed limit is good manners, and good hwy. safety. And I have been a part of educational groups teaching true squids real manners, but, in my book, a responsible rider merely safely passing a nervous newbie is not a squid. You might consider knowing more about the person you're addressing before calling her/him a squid, or lecturing about groups educating same. | ||
