I need some help here. Someone that knows something about computers and is in need of a few brownie points should please respond.

I’m using Windows XP Home Edition and over time I have collected lots of little icons in the “Tray”, that little area on the bottom right side of the screen.

How do I get rid of them?

For example, I’ve got two versions of MSN Messenger. Obviously I only need the newer version. Real Networks Media Player is another icon I’d like to get rid of. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Thanks, Ray

Go to start, run, type in " msconfig " click on startup tab then uncheck the programs. You can sometimes right click on some of those icons and find the preference menu and deselect run on windows startup..

Or better yet, run Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and uninstall what you don't need.

run regedit
then go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

this key will have all(most) of the .exe's that load on startup
just delete the ones you don't want
export the key first so you have a backup

Be extremely careful while messing around in your registry. Bad things can happen. If you're not familiar with the registry, use registry manipulation tools, such as the aforementioned msconfig.

Ray, don't mess around in your registry.

Try this small app.,you can disable anything in your start-up. You won't have to uninstall anything.

www.winpatrol.com

pretty handy little freebee.

Thanks,

I did all of that and I’ve solved my puzzles and problems. I deleted, disabled, downloaded and stayed the heck out of the registry. I’m a happy guy.

Another option is to check the Startup folder in the Start menu under All Programs. Some programs put a shortcut in that folder when installed and Windoze checks it during the startup process and runs them.

But, alot of programs are smarter than that, so then you have to do what the other guys have mentioned (minus the registry editing, unless you really know what you're doing)
