I think it was all some big Machiavellian plan...

Step 1: Court #@$$#$ off Harley corporate to the point they are spitting and speechless.

Step 2: Court boldly pronounces the bike will never be shipped.

I think that's the "rope-a-dope" gambit, isn't it? : D

I couldn't care less. Bike's fugly.

To each his own. I ride the "ugliest" bike in Buell's line-up! : D

I have it on excellent authority that HD dealers are being allowed to order the bike, no firm delivery dates are being mentioned. It may help to be personal friends of a "real dealer".

They have about a week and a half to pull it off because Harley Corporate memo announcement was NO NEW Sportsters delivery for MAY or June. And everybody knows June is when the shut down historically happens.

Ps I do work at a dealer, I assure you that it is quite a real location, we even have Buell parking.

I would love to see Court Eat crow on this, but I just dont think its going to happen. It will be just like every other bike the company has got me hyped up about... somewhere in a prerelease locked warehouse. : | It was interesting to see it in the new owners manuals though....

Needs a nice 2 into 1 muffler that lays along the swing arm to make it look like worth spending the money on.

Like this Rhinehart by Bub 2 into 1, right?

There's been some discussion on this over on the Critical Mass board too:

I'm curious about this whole "designed for European height/ergonomics" thing. How do you specialize a bike for supermodels and skinny guys with bad teeth?

(That was a joke, btw, before someone accuses me of stereotyping!)

Seriously, though, Ducati and Triumph aren't doing anything "special" to retrofit their bikes for the USA. I think H-D is just making an excuse to keep the American market chromed out. Bastards.

Yes, JackbeQuick, that'll do...

I have to admit, if they'd had this bike for sale here before I bought my M2 I would have bought it instead of the M2. I would never have known what I was missing, but I would have.

If you try to order a XR1200, the dealer will tell you they are not available in the U.S. yet. But if you say you are interested in A Buell XB12R then he will probably say" Don't have any of those.....but hows 'bout a XR1200?"

(Sorry, couldn't resist a little "dealer humor"!)

"I would love to see Court Eat crow on this, but I just dont think its going to happen."

This year it's very unlikely, within the next couple, it'll most likely happen. The folks in HD engineering are still working very hard on this project for Europe. I hear that by the time it hits the US market, it'll be a very very nice bike at a "Buell-like" price.

I am guessing that HD realizes that the majority of its "sales" people will have exactly zero of an idea as to how to sell that bike to the current crop of US chrome junkies. And it will flop.

Any HD/Buell sales people that play here, the above does not apply.

Here is an idea... badge it as a Buell. Already has the engine. Use Buell like Ford did the SVT cars.

eeeewwww she be a FAT buell at that though, lil porker has to be over 500 lbs.
No stats or technical data other than glossy over view as of yet.
I would just have to get it in orange, I bet it would be the only one we get, so no need to worry how to sell it ; )

I also thought selling it as a Buell would be a good idea. Buell could use a more relaxed bike in the lineup, a step between the Blast and the S.

A more relaxed Buell would be a cool idea, but it would need to be engineered and developed by Buell . Otherwise it devalues both brands imo.

Harley needs a sportier Sport, the 883R just doesn't cut it. I guess Harley thinks they haven't sold before, but they haven't seriously tried, maybe ever. The XR1000 was half-assed, compared to the looks of a Storz or Lawwill street-tracker. They could actually even sell a 750 Sportster if it looked like the Storz. That displacement would help international sales, as well as insurance costs, etc.
I sure as heck would buy one, yes, even for $14K, IF it had the "right stuff."

mmm we have historically sold out of XL883R's and XL1200R's every year. WE usually have to go steal them from other dealers to get our local demand. I just cant resist pimping and spreading the joy of an all black motor case, esp when it is dressed in orange

Just imagine if they actually turned out something worthy of an R in the name!

(I really liked the 883R, BTW).

Keep in mind that the 1200R Roadster is a thowback to the Roadster from the 60's, which was actually more touring inspired than anything else.

"R" doesn't always mean fast and nimble.

Right the original "Roadster" XLT was the touring Sportster, when was that, 1977 or so? I liked that model, I think only made for couple years.

The two-into-one pipe 883R was the best looking sportster for quite a while, I'm not suggesting they don't sell, just saying Harley is not capitalizing at all on their years, nay decades, of success at Flat Track racing. This XR1200 comes the closest, styling-wise, of anything in recent years. But I'm sure it's a porker, etc. They could, if they wanted, come out with a CVO limited edition version, stripped and peeled, just like this one http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2008/02/09/jay-s pringsteen-xr750-replica-street-tracker/ and for less it's cost of $26K. I bet they would sell them all at $14K. Look at the prices for a real XR750 made into a street bike. There's one listed for sale now for $38K.

You could get a K-model with the "Roadster" tank and bags. My brother had a 1954 with all that stuff on it. On the other hand if you got an XLCH(compition hot!) you got no battery, magnetto and high compression and that was IT!

There's talk of a european one-make race series:
http://www.fasterandfaster.net/2008/02/ready-to-ra ce-harley-davidson-xr1200.html

And here's a road-test from the UK:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml =/motoring/2008/04/19/nosplit/mfbike119.xml

Is the swingarm used on any other Sportster? What about the upside down forks?

The bike is also the main feature on the Harley-Davidson Website when you switch countries to United Kingdom, including price of 7,655GBP.

(Which is really annoying as when you go to the Buell site and switch countries to Australia it still has the 1125r as a little link down the bottom to the US 1125r minisite... no local prices, release date... there ends my whinge...)

The XR1200 is growing on me. I still think a Storz kit is better looking, but I like how they've managed to incorporate the pillion seat. Looks good on the move with a rider on it too.

I've cleared the last hurdle H-D corporate had for release in the USA, I have purchased my spring harley. Now they are free to start selling the bike of my dreams while I kick myself for not waiting.

No need to thank me, it's just a public service job for me.
