Nicely put Jack.

By the way, I sold my Dyna FXD, and got a FXDX.
Put a set of Metzlers on it, and a steering damper.

Handling was very much improved over the FXD.

I have been wondering if a Ulysses front end would fit on the bike. Would solve the handling and braking situation in one fell swoop.

I really hoped to meet some of you at March Badness this year, but the scheduling didn't work. Hopefully next year I'll be able to make it.

Don't wait until next March, come to Suches for for Buelltoberfest!

Ok, something to look forward to. I love the roads up there and would really like to meet you guys (and girls).

Oh and how I wish I was a RUB. I do ride a Harley, but no RUB here. More like a PSB (poor suburban biker) who is a CB (country boy) at heart.

I haven't owned a Buell in about two years now. But can't tear myself away from the BadWeb. It is the people, it is that simple.

There is something unique about BadWeB that keep a lot of us coming back every day. I don't own a bike, don't have MC endorsement or even have the desire to ride my own bike right now. I enjoy riding with my hubby and having my personal veg time! BadWeB, in my opinion, is about more than Buells.

"..By the way, I sold my Dyna FXD..."

I kind of looked for a used FXDX before I bought my FXD and didn't find any. But it sounds like you're working on the same kind of things I am. I went to the ME-880s last season and was tickled pink with them.

I looked at going to a later model 41mm Showa front end thinking a takeoff from a later model would be a good deal and might work better. But I did not want to go to a WideGlide front end.

So for now I'm going to overhaul what I have and improve it a little. I'll add the Race-Tech Gold Cup emulators and a set of their springs to the forks before I roll out this spring and see how much better that is.

I also ordered up a pair of Progressive 412 shocks to restore the rear end to its original height and add some damping going back there. The 412's might not be the world's best shocks but the cost of stuff like the $660 Race-Techs scared me off.

An engine rebuild over next winter (I'll be at about 60,000 miles by then) will add a pair of SE heads over the stock cylinders and flat top pistons (raising compression from 8.5:1 to 9.5:1)).

And I'll add a set of cams that will take advantage of the improved flow and compression, probably a set of Andrews EV-27's.

I'll stay with the CV-40 and that should take it up from 65 HP to around 85 HP and still give me a little more power with good reliability and service life. I figure it will run me around $3,000 and I am now willing to put that much into bike after riding it two seasons. It suits my needs perfectly.

Does that price include labor or are you doing that yourself?

Jack,
Thanks for your advice when I got my first Dyna.

Luckily, I was able to find a nice FXDX with a stage three 95" motor, about 90 hp or so. Makes one really appreciate what efforts have gone into making the Buell motors so effective.

As far as suspension goes, you might want to keep an open on eBay if you go there. I have seen FXDX front ends there for good prices, like $400. Considering that you can sell your FXD front end for a couple hundred, it is a good swap. Same is true for the rear shocks.

This suspension is pretty simple by Buell standards, but it has adjustable shocks and preload, as well as being about an inch longer.

Because the preload can be adjusted for less sag, (known as squat in Harley lingo), the bike actually rides about 2" higher, and there is some useful damping available. The rear shocks are 13.5".

I have dual floating rotors on my front forks, and they provide a big increase in braking compared to the stock single disk.

The increased ride height also helps with another problem: ground clearance. This is not a major consideration for most Harley riders, but it is for a Buell rider on a Harley.

Most Harley exhausts touch ground sooner than they should, and I have yet to find an exhaust maker who is interested in "road racing" exhausts.

Kevin at Drummer has made a muffler for a friends Harley, and it would be great if a bunch of Dyna riders could interest him in making one for us.

As far as the engine goes, I might suggest boring out the stock cylinders to 95" if you are going to new pistons.

As far as cams go, I am not familiar with the Andrews, but I do believe it is important to get gear driven cams.

My motor has a Fueling oil pump, and that seems to be rather desirable not only for better oiling, but to provide better scavenging which means less oil dripping out of the air filter.

Keep in touch, and let us know how your project went.

I used to run the Metzlers on my FXDX. They were OK, but I switched to Avon Venoms and I think they are better. My motor is basically stock, equivalent to stage 1 I guess. I would like more power eventually, but that would take away money I could put toward a Buell one day. Decisions, decisions.

I was looking at the Avon Venoms as well, but because my bike has a 17" Deuce rear wheel, I had a hard time getting a matching set of Avons on both wheels.

The rep at the bike show suggested that I could use a belted tire on one wheel, and a radial tire on the other, but by that time, I had bought the Metzlers.

It is interesting to note that after spending $3,000 + to modify a Big Twin, the power is about the same as a stock Buell XB12, and it still requires a better clutch, oil pump, and an oil cooler.
