Well ... Broken exhaust stud .. studs only in since May ... replacing with race quality/strength custom studs ... the 3 that didn't break came out real easy with a 1/4" ratchet .. so I figure why not, use an easy out for the broken stud (mind you - had I been patient I would have had no problem as the next day I had the JIMS drill plate in hand) ... Well - you can guess what happened next -- tink - broken easy out .. Tried several drill bits in the drawer, no luck ... wasn't going to spend 30 bucks for a solid carbide bit .. but I did run to Grainger and buy a 1/4" round nosed master cut (turns metal into powder )burring bit for a rotary tool - grind a little- drill a little - eventually got to the point where a burst of compressed air dislodged the tip of the easy out ... Then on to drilling as usual ... took about a half hour to drill out the stud (including the easy out portion)... I feel so much better now ... no dismantling to take to a machine shop .. no 5 hour job to remove the stud ... and no mangled stud hole or head ... Now - if I could just find my 5/16 18 tap... |

the best trick I learned for playin with easy outs. If you need to use them drill the hole all the way thru the stud so you can "Punch" it thru of the easy out breaks. I am glad you got it out with some ease |

How do you punch it thru if it's a blind hole? |

thru into the small amount of space that is back there. Being that the threads do not reach all the way into the head. There should be about .100 worth of space back there for the easy out to sit in. |

Great job Brian! I figured it would be much more of a hassle than that. Tear it up on the racetrack!! |

I threw new studs in it .. but not stock studs .. As it turns out - stock studs are nothing more than the ACE hardware type, grade 5 studs ... The XBRR studs are much stronger but cost 25 bucks per .. I was able to get my hands on a custom made set that are as strong as the XBRR studs but at only 3 bucks per ... (used by a Buell racer that used to break about 6 or so studs per season ... until he had these made - he hasn't broken these yet) |
