Those who came to Homecoming will remember some of the roads I took them down on the way to Great Lakes Dragaway ... well - those would be a few of my fav's and I went riding on the same roads today ... with a slight switch ...

On the ride during Homecoming I left out a few out of the way, off the direct path that I hit on my own ... well - one of them includes a blind corner and at dusk tonight included enough gravel to turn a black road white ...

After the rear washing out I realized this turn wasn't happening .. see a 1/3 acre of grass and trees .. (trees every 6ft almost like it was a grid ... ) ended up sliding back and forth through the apex of the turn while trying to slow up and grab a line where there wasn't gravel ... that wasn't happening either ..

I figured I'd take my chances with the grass and trees instead of high siding on pavement .. at the point where I left the road there where two lines from tires almost 2 feet apart .. that is how far sideways I was when I left the road .. somehow I kept the bike up ... then on to the grass .. got the wheels in line again and hit a huge dip in this VERY uneven terrain ... rear wheel started washing out the other way due to that dip .. weaved through a couple trees and got the wheels lined up again as I passed a tree on my left close enough to say hi to the ants crawling on it ! ... then saw that I was running out of real estate (boulders and an uncut field of growth about 4 ft high) so I lightly grabbed a little front brake (feet were down to help keep me up over the roughness) and as soon as I touched the brake I was slammed hard(not an exaggeration) to the ground on the left side as the front wheel washed out to the right, bike only slid a couple feet as the left handlebar took a Caddyshack sized chunk of grass and dirt and the footpeg also dug in ...

As I lay on my back (how I got off the bike all the way is beyond me - I keep picturing what happened and I can't see how my left leg wasn't under the bike) I hear my horn blowing ... handlebar was bent so far over that it was into the tank, left fork leg slammed so hard into the frame that it dented the front of the frame .. (when the bike slammed down the handlebar dug in and slammed the forks to full lock to the left) .. somehow really banged up my right knee - rash from above my knee to the top of my shin ... and now 4 hours later my right shoulder hurts ...

Damage to bike -

Brand new bar end indicators messed up, bar end mirror arm broke, frame dented, fly screen scuffed and mounts bent, primary and clutch cover scuffed, axle cover scuffed, handlebar almost looks like a candy cane, air cleaner loose (probably from my knee) ..

Damage to me -

Not much ... Pride, knee, shoulder, and my wrist (which already has a permanent disability and a screw in it .. )

All I can say is thank some deity that I kept the bike up long enough to somewhat slow it down and to land in the grass, and not a tree or pavement ...

Yea, the S1 ... I think I would be still crying if it was the M2 ...

just woke up ... can barely move my shoulder/arm around ... knee is super stiff ... and I have a bike or two to go detail today at Hal's ....

Still can't believe that happened ... but glad at the same time - this could've been a lot worse ... I walked away, rather - rode away ... not all are that lucky ...

Wow! That was quite a description of the accident. I felt like I was right there with you... not a good feeling.

I got that same dent on the left side of my frame from where the fork tube smashed into it. Sounds like you saved the bike and yourself from major carnage. You probably don't feel like it, but you are lucky-lucky.

GOODGRIEF TATT!!!
You'll be finding more sore spots on you and the bike for a while, I guess.
All the opposing thoughts and emotions in these experiences are amazing, like how fast stuff happens in slow motion. How did I miss getting from here to there without knowing it. How disgusted you are about what happened, while also so pleased it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. If I had done this instead of that, on and on. That one or two seconds takes weeks to analyze. Sounds like you did good with a bad situation though. Then you realize all the work you did getting the bike where you wanted it was really just practice.
I'm glad and impressed you got up and rode out of there, it's so much better to be able to file your own crash report!!
Get better quick man you got things to do!!
Rotzaruck!!!

it's sounds like you did great, the worst thing you can do is panic but it sounds like you kept your head the whole time, especially if you saw the ants on the tree, hehe, glad you're ok!

Brian - here's to a quick recovery for you as well. Sounds like you made some split second decisions that saved you from major injury.

Thanks everyone ...

I thought I'd be all back to normal by now - since all that was hurting was my shoulder and knee ..

I was wrong .. riding was a chore today .. and I am supposed to be leaving tomorrow morning for a couple hundred mile ride to go camping for a week .. probably a 5-800 mile week ahead of me .. taking my M2 so hopefully I won't be too sore .. but today was rough (riding the S1 at that - am I asking for it or what ??!?) Today I wake up to a stiff back, knee is now bruised with the rash .. both shoulders and neck hurt, and left groin is a bit sore .. Aside from the rash on my knee I believe it's just muscles and I'll be good a couple days ..

Will definitely be an interesting week to come though..

Bike is back together (actually pretty much had it fixed that same night ..rode it yesterday already) .. had a wide set of crossroads bars for the M2 - swapped the bars on to the S1 plate and swapped over the controls (only difference is the bars are a little longer) ... spent about an hour doing my thing with the paint - can't hardly tell that I went down now .. the only tell is the dent in the frame ... and lack of my bar end turn signals and bar end mirror ..

A friend of mine went to the road where I went down and said the only way anyone would make it through was to idle through that corner - that actually made me feel a little better ... despite knowing I did all I could I was still beating myself up all night after it happened and the all day yesterday as well ..

65460 - It happened just west of the fun part of Hwy K .. the road that is a slight left (north) off K with a few 25mph curves that ends up coming back out on K (heading west) ...

Ed - I've been back and forth on this bike ever since I got it .. seems like every step forward is 3 back .. gets frustrating .. I am actually tired of wrenching on the damn things (and it's something I enjoy doing !) - oh and I finally got your 2 - (well, 3) parts in a box ready to go out .. I will do my best to get it to the post office before I leave tomorrow morning ..

Awww Brian, that frustration is just those aches and pains talking!!! To crash and be riding the same bike that quick is pretty amazing. When you get feeling better, it'll all look better, I'm thinkin'. That S1 is probably not just thrilled with you at the moment either.
I'm sure by the time you finish this trip, you'll be all better or dead anyway.
Don't worry about my parts, it's still going to be a while before I can do anything anyway. Go ride, do it when you get back.`Take a case of "Icy Hot"
Rotzaruck!!!

HAHA .... You REALLY don't want me to do that .... I will still try to 'Think Lean' through the corners, and try to rid them tires of any chicken strips ... all that fancy chrome will end up all scraped up (no amount of buffing will fix that) ...

Hmmm .... wonder if I can get a knee down on a Deuce ?!!?

Trying to decide IF I should be the first 1125 owner in the twin cities...no orders yet and get this, so far they're willing to deal somewhat! Matt's out on the Yammmie for an evening ride... I think some gal caught his eye but I'm not really sure about that... just a dad feeling.

The only knee down is when I get to polish that chromies!!!
