What should the temp be?
I went for 1 1/2 hour ride about 70mph.
Outdoor temp is 75-80, a nice day.

Head temps after the ride , maybe 1-2 minutes after stopping are in the 380 range, with front being slightly less.
Seems hot to me, smells hot, and the engine paint is discoloring as well.

Any thoughts, thanks

I believe normal temp is right around 275 degrees. Temperatures will vary between the front and rear, of course.

Where are you measuring the temperature?

Assuming you are riding the S2.

Are you sure it is not running lean?

I'd pull the jets and see what the jet numbers are.

I was just about to suggest that. A lean condition will result in temps in the 350-390 range.

Jets are new 180 and 45, along with some other CV performance stuff.
I measured temp at several spots on the head, the best place seemed by plug, between plug and head bolt.

Yes the S2 with Thunderstorm top end.

Rings were gapped by Phelan.

John, my thunder-stormed S2 is running a 190 main and 145 slow. Temp is a bit high, but I've seen 350 on the VDO temp gauge on my '00 M2. It has a S3 fairing and dash. I filled the clock hole with a cylinder head temp gauge with the sender to n the stock spot on the rear head.

Check and make sure there isn't too much advance as well. But after a ride like that on a warm is day, Temps don't sound too bad IMO. XBs hit over 400 routinely. Rings were gapped and de-burred accordingly, no issue there.

I really don't know about advance.
I timed it according to S2 manual, 2 dots in window at 1000 rpm.
Should it be different?

Actually I sent you an email a couple of days ago, asking that in a round about way.

I must have missed the email. Stock S2 timing is too much. You are now running a full point of compression more than stock. Retard timing about 3* and go from there.

Thanks Phelan, how do I do that though?

Use a black sharpie and draw a line on the timing pickup in the section with multiple lines, which each should be 1*. Extend this line onto the cam cover, so that when you turn the timing pickup counter clockwise, you have a mark that shows you when you've gone 3*.

Hold on. Let me double check the degree on each of those. I don't think it's 1* each actually.

Manual doesn't say how many degrees each mark is. I would turn the cam sensor 1.5 marks and see if conditions improve.

Right I forgot about those.
Which way is advance or retard?

And Thanks Again

Oh I could look that up in the manual couldn't I?
Duh..

Thanks again.

Clockwise is advancing, counterclockwise is retarding. You need to retard it ~3*.

Cam sensor spec (not published that I know of) states each mark equals 2-3 degrees.

According to my rough math, each mark is 2.388 degrees.
So Screamer's info sounds about right to me.
