Paint stripper worked great to take the clear powder coat off.




Took about 4 months away from it. Jan 2015

Wet sanding, kinda boring so I only took one pic.




Shot a second coat of high build primer, wet sanded again, and finally putting some color down.




Base coat done and first layer of clear down.

Done spraying! Finally




Close up of the color Black Sapphire with some pearl added to the clear.




Started color sanding and buffing after 12 hrs of drying. A spare frame and fuel cell really made buffing a lot easier and cleaner.

I re-keyed the steering head lock and seat lock to match the ignition switch.




Front fender installed. The painted fender was much harder to install without scratches. The plastic was very stiff. I ended up pulling the front wheel and coming up from the bottom.




That's where it sits today. I am getting the registration put on next week and have to finish all the details and get the seat reupholstered. My plan was to sell this bike after completion so if anybody is interested hit me up.

Looks very good!

It doesn't really matter how long such rebuild takes ,so long as we enjoy spending time and working on it that's a good thing!

I can imagine that working on it is half the fun of owning and riding with it at the end ,it's great when almost ready ,but also a time to have a look for another project

I'm glad you guys like it. I got the registration all squared away yesterday and put 10 miles on it.

I have some bugs to work out, not surprised, but will start dialing it in. It seems to vibrate more than my other tubers. I think I may have to play with all the tie bars since they are not matched to this frame. Anyone have tips for those?

The vibes might calm down a bit after some more miles.
My X1 vibes bad if it's been left alone for a few months but after 30 miles or so, it settles in.
Also, cold weather hardens the rubber up.

Took her for a short ride down to the Queen Mary. Got some nice pics in the setting sun. The vibes haven't gone away so I need to look into that and the force exhaust has got to go. I never realized you can't run a stock chin fairing with a force. Anyone interested in a trade for a stock header or header and muffler? There's a close up of the blue for you K12.

The bike looks great.
I can't help you with the tie bars but the current front isolator seems to buzz more than the earlier ones. Did you change that?

The bike looks simply amazing. Actually the black exhaust/header suit the bike but the chin spoiler will definitely complete the look.

That is a great rebuild and know the puzzle solving and satisfaction when it first starts up after the build. For my own rebuild, I used the original tie bars ( without adjusting them ) on the top frame to engine and rear. There is serious tension on the top one as I had to use a steel rod to pry the engine into place to allow the bolt to line up. That is not really a very technical explanation but the manual does say somewhere not to adjust the tie bars. I replaced the front one in stainless and just nipped it up and checking it after each ride. Not getting any serious vibes at normal running speeds.

I put the new rear isolators on this spring and the bike definitely has more vibration. They are stiffer so more vibe should be expected.
