While have my s2 apart I want to paint it white. It is currently dark purple but the fairing was red then painted black.
Not looking for show just decent.

Thinking:
HF trim paint gun
Water separator for compressor
Arcrylic enamel single stage white
Remove parts
Fix any cracks
Wet sand 600
Primer 2 coats
Sand wet 600
Paint prep wipes clean all surfaces
Shot white inside garage
Let dry and reassemble

Thoughts?

I would use a primer sealer between primer and paint. Better adhesion and sands out nicely (that's what it's for).

Two guns: one for primer, one for paint.

Wear all the safety gear - respirator while flinging paint, dust mask while sanding.

Quality paint job is mostly the prep work, then quality of materials, cleanliness of the environment. Slinging paint itself takes a bit of experience but it's simple with a decent gun.

I personally just farm out paint other than quick rattle can jobs anymore. To do it well is labor intensive, there's a lot of consumables, disposal of excess paint and thinner after cleaning the guns, plus getting an area set where I can expect cleanliness and not worry about overspray ...it's just a pain in the butt. And if you are not going to do it well, why bother doing it at all?

In some areas you can find a spray booth for rent or make friends with a body shop owner. That would eliminate most of my objections to doing my own paint, other than the big one: breathing paint fumes will make you stoopit..

version 2:

select color
drop off parts to painter with color code
open beer
drink beer
tackle other projects
pick up painted parts when complete
carefully scrutinize finished product
install

except that labor is so expensive when it comes to paint... if you've got the tools, experience, paint, and a properly vented place with plenty of room.... go for it!

me? I'm kinda stuck with option 2!

So is that a plain white? Or a period-correct pearl white?

It's true that the market for Buells is pretty sad right now, and has been for quite some time, but bikes like this one will help change this eventually. The more people paint their tubers in a non-stock color, customize them to their personal liking, the more valuable will the surviving bikes become. Court not too long ago said that the best we can do is "sit" on them and enjoy them the way their were intended by riding them. True words. But modifying a rare tuber is a surefire way to improve the market for those bikes who have been kept original or at least bone stock.

Bernard,

I agree 100%

Such a shame to paint over such a beautiful color, finding a set of mix match bodywork to paint over is not that hard to do.

Just saying...

To each his own...

Ride Safe,
Chris

Paint job sure looks like it came out nice!

though, I feel compelled to say (as offered above), I've got stock 1995 white sitting on a shelf, maybe I can figure out how to match Black Saphire......except that I have a piece at a paint shop for over 6 months now patiently waiting for him to figure out how to match a tank cover to the other pieces I already have...so no real hope of achieving success.

Whats really important here is that no body owes anyone anything here, we help when we can, when we are able, when it aligns with our plans for our own projects and when its convenient but I sure would have like to have had an opportunity to buy or trade for that set of black sapphire.....

As far as the paint work goes, it looks like it really came out nice, I like the blue Buell sticker on the tank cover instead of the grey that was factory color, it really pops. Sure wish I had the time and tools...and space... to have a paint booth and know what I was doing in one!

Nice work, it'll be a head turner for sure when done.

For those reading: Does anyone have a tank cover and front fender in black sapphire that is in excellent condition? I have a perfect fairing and tail and could use a CF front fender if all I can find is a tank cover...

keep up the photos, looking forward to seeing the completed bike in some good light!

The fairing was not original on this - it was red underneath rattle can black, the tail was cracking and the front was chewed up. The bags were not same color either. I bought from another badweb who said it belonged to hd me mechanic in Stockton. It looked ok but runs solid. Like said above over spray everywhere, very labor intensive, $300 materials - but I have the color I want though I still desire a white X1. I am not a collector - any thing sits too long it needs to go. But l love what Eric believed in and what he did with what he had. I ride mine .

I do like the blue emblem, it really stands out better than the original grey!

Hi Jolly
I played with my exhaust and did not put the screw in that held the baffle in - at 70mph the baffle blew out at rubbed a hole in brand new 200 tire. I slid into the middle divide and took the tow truck home another 200. But walked away with just a blown tire.
New tire on just need to pick up from the shop. Also got the seals for the bags, so next pic with the bags on.

MarK-

I re-read your post 4 times before I wrapped my head around that you were talking about a $200 tire and not a 200 size tire...I hope.

170/60R17" FTW!

yep I ordered the wrong lid seals so had to re-order the right ones, but rear tire is back on and 3 stainless bolts now hold on what is left of the baffle.

Have any pics of the bike on the right side? That header is not a stock or a race header. It looks to be a WesTek exhaust, as they had Supertrapp mufflers. If the exhaust is the one that sold on eBay for about $200 a few moths ago, that is indeed a WesTek system. Very rare and nice find.

This bike has lots of upgrades done previous owner hd mech. Yes supertrap Wes tech muffler. I put the baffle back in with out the wrap material. I wanted it louder to be heard if not seen. The new lid seal should show up next week. Then I am thinking of making a trip to Corbin.

Very nice. If you go to Corbin, they can rework your stock seat, but they don't have S2 seat pans to build an S2 seat from scratch any more.
