I'm having a lot of splooge leaking all over the left side of my S3T out of my breather.This Jaz catch can/breather setup is the same one I've had on four different S2/S2T's since 2000.
I never had a problem on the S2's and would have to drain around a 1/2" of splooge from the can in say two or three months time.Now I go for a ride to the mountains,two to three hundred miles and I have a dirty bike and stained jeans.I just emptied the catch can and got 3/4 of a cup out.After thinking about it I road home in the rain from Glitch Badness last Sunday and the location may be picking up all that moisture.The reason I mounted it in this spot is I saw the unit American Sport Bike sells mounted in this location.I would love to see where you have yours mounted on S3's.
There is a difference in routing between the S2's and the S3,on the S2's I went up over the rear rocker cover and down the frame member behind the battery box and then back up to the sub frame support just in front of the right side saddlebag.On the S3 I went up and over the front rocker cover then down the V in front of the head to the location pictured.

i have an x1 and i mount min on the middle angled frame tube on the same side and have had no problems as of ow, but it is not the same bike so i do not know.have you changed the oil type maybe???

With a Penske shock reservoir already mounted to the frame, I can't take having another can strapped onto my beauty.

So I am looking for a good hiding spot on my S3 - maybe under the seat??

Neil,I'm using Mobile 1 V-Twin oil in both bikes.I like your color combo,same as mine.

Scott,I looked at mounting mine under the tail section,back by the tag mount area
but it was too long over all to fit there.If you come up with something let me know.
I'm always worred about getting splooge on the rear tire,I've seen it happen on
other bikes and it scares the crap out of me.

i was always told that the breather should be as close to the vent as possible but slightly elevated.

i have never used one, i just run a hose out the back.
i don't rev over 6,000 at the most.
if you get
a lot of oil out the breather, could be a crack in a piston. i've seen that cause it in the past.

The breather should be as close to the head as possible. A long tube, at the frequency of the pulses these engines produce, is effectively a plug.

I have a PCV valve inline with my breather immediately after they join after exiting the heads. The tube then tees and goes downhill to a catch can, and up to the intake so that there is vacuum on the vent. The catch can is sealed, but has a drain.

If you run your vent tubes uphill to your catch can, you'll likely just end up with slugs of oil in the line, and not actually a breather. So putting it under the seat is not a good idea.

I have mine mounted on my S3T under the back seat at the tab where the forward bag mounts. I did make my catch can though for my application using an old ac receiver drier, and running a filter at the plate mount. It may not be the most effective but it does work.

Mine is in the same exact spot as the OP and have had no issues. But I don't ride in rain and live at sea level.

Oops, I made a mistake in my post. The PCV valve is not before the tee, it is after the tee, in the hose that runs UP from the tee to the airbox. The catch can is attached to the tube that is down hill from the tee.

Remember that the breather holes in the heads are not like the breathers in the XB engines.

That hole is a drain. Once oil gets past the umbrella valves in the heads, it has no place to go but out of the breather holes. It will not drain back into the engine. If enough oil gets into the drain, and the drain is uphill, it will plug. With a short hose, it'll probably just blow out, but with a long hose, it will not. The pulses of air die in the hose. You can see this for yourself. With the engine running, put your finger over a short section of hose attached to the breather. You can feel air moving in and out. Now attach a long hose and try again.

A catch can like the one in the first post will work...as a catch can...but not really a breather. The hose is too long. Putting vacuum on the breather (the reason cars use PCV valves...no idea why we don't see this on bikes) helps the rings seal, which in turn reduces the blowby that eventually ends up in the catch can.

The MOST "IMPORTANT" breather hose to run to the CATCH CONTAINER is the TRANSMISSION BREATHER HOSE ...

REASON: When you get oil on your rear tire from it you will understand "WHY" !!!

Hoot i checked & i can feel the breather breathing strong out the back.
i had this bike with same hose out the rear breather, on a DJ 250i dyno made 94HP so doubt it would make that if it could not breath free.
i honed bore with sunnen stones put new rings had three angle valve job new valve steam seals, latter checked seal & getting a good seal on leak down test.
no oil out breather.
but when i drag race i put breather hose in coke can tie with plastic ties .

Oil comes out of the transmission breather only when you over fill the tranny.
Never had any issues in the last 15 years.Not with my Sporty or my Cyclone.
No need for a catch can to the tranny breather,IMHO.
Btw.,A Jazz catch can for the crankase is in front of the battery,or behind the rear cyclinder mounted.

That means you've got a lot of blow by. You're going to get SOME blow by, but it shouldn't be 'strong'. At least, this is the case with my two tubers.
If the rings are sealing well, all you'll get are back and forth pulses as the pistons move in and out of the cases, and since the pistons move up and down at nearly the same time in a single crank pin v twin, the pulses are pretty big. You can really feel this at idle, but as the RPMs increase, especially with a long hose, those pulses start to cancel each other out, and the puffs of air never make it to the end of the hose.
But, maybe that's OK. If it's blowing enough air/exhaust/fuel out of the vent, it'll keep the line clear. That mixture can only be coming from what's getting past the rings though.

When your crank seal goes, that happens all by itself and blows oil all over your rear tire. Having a catch can for your tranny is a good safety measure, especially since those crank seals prone to leak unless they've been replaced with the updated part.

I had that same Jaz catch can on my 2001 S3T. I mounted it on the battery tie down strap. The can was then behind the rear cylinder and in front of the battery. Used it there for a number of years but never liked the filter getting oil saturated and then making a mess of the nearby area.

I've got a new setup that I'll describe if anyone is interested.

It is mounted by a metal bridge on the Jazz
and then by a sheet metal strap to the battery mount.
I have to look for a picture to make it clearer,shure I got one..
My baby is still in the Netherlands at Twin Motorcycles
because of the big bore upgrade she's got.

I always have an eye on my crank seal.
The newer version isn't prone to leak and I controll my primary oil level on a regular base.
Again,no need for a transmission breather catch can.

I had my crank seal go on my old S2 and it got oil all over the place, namely the tire. That was fun..

Mike how often do you ride this bike? And have you had blow by issue any other times, besides your ride in the mountains? Three main things cause spooge- condensation from sitting, bad umbrella valves, and/or bad ring seal. These are the things I would be looking at.

I ride it two or three times a week.I think I'm seeing the problem all the time because I hardly ever just putt around on it,I'm either blasting down the interstate running errands or having too much fun in the mountains.The bikes got just over 18,000 miles on it.

Is the bike garaged or stored outside? How much rain and humidity have you had lately. You're in Georgia, so I would presume a lot, though I may have been wrong once or twice. Higher RPMs will produce more blow by simply because of much more cranking pressure sealing past the rings, which happens more in heavy acceleration. I would likely be looking at rocker gaskets to replace the umbrella valves first, to see if that fixes your issue. One way you can cut down blow by is by switching to XB rocker covers with top mounted PCV valves, and plug the stock breather holes with plain bolts to hold the carb support bracket.

It is garaged.As I posted above I road home in a steady rain Sunday a week ago,but it was blowing in conditions of no rain as well.
I made my own XB rockers on one of my S2's by drilling holes in my stock rocker tops and installing XB PCV valves.But I didn't
notice any change in the amount of splooge in the catch can and it made a mess on top of the rocker covers.I did it more for aesthetic
reasons (I put stainless button heads where the nipples were) than out of a need for improved breathing.

My new setup ... 01 S3T

... I've done the XB Rocker Box conversion
1) run a single hose from each PCV to a tee tie wrapped to the tube frame just behind the rear head.
2) single tube coming from tee in 1 along the upper frame rail to another tee tie wrapped to the upper frame straight above the oil tank drain hose.
3) clear vinyl tube comes straight down from the tee in 2 to a spot close to the oil drain hose. This clear vinyl line is plugged with a bolt at the open end.
4) last hose from the tee in 2 to an empty Red Bull can tie wrapped behind the license plate. This hose is open.

The idea is that the open hose terminated in the red bull can relieves the crank case pressure. As this termination is the highest point in the line, not much spooge gets here, but it collects in the clear vinyl line. I take the bolt out of the vinyl line to drain the spooge when I see it collected there. And I don't have a breather filter getting saturated with oil.
