Anyone have any luck matching 1995 black saphire? The PP in the code is a pearl past(?) no longer available. Anyone located a perfect color match option formula? | ||

Good luck with a 100% match, especially with obsolete materials specified. A suggestion that might be acceptable, is to look at the later Demon Blue used on S3's. It's apperance is almost that of a refined Black Sapphire, or maybe a more consistent (from part to part. bike to bike) Black Sapphire. Demon Blue should be PPG paints, which should be more readily available as well. Just a thought, 1313 | ||

Thanks, I have a PERFECT tail and a brand new never mounted PERFECT front fairing, need to match tank cover and fender.... Will demon blue work or since I'm matching major body work to existing perfect body work will I still need to match black saphire? It's the PP5 that I need to match for the right color match.... | ||

The trick might be to find out where the paint came from in the first instance. That is some NOS I bought a few years ago. I think you will find to get a "Perfect" match all the body work will have to be repainted and have the body work painted in position as though it was on the bike. | ||

just got bad news and good news, gotta love it. the company I ordered the PP05 from called and apologized, no longer available, called multiple suppliers and no one has it, as you all have already learned, its no longer available... however, the good news ... they had a 4 ounce container sitting on the shelf and wanted to know if I wanted to buy that, I may have just bought the very last jar commercially available..... I should have it this weekend and will get it to the painter and see what he comes up with matching the tank cover and front fender to the perfect condition tail and fairing, and then I "store"(?) the left over..... | ||

Thanks Brankin, That's the file I couldn't find, had a laptop crunch on me that had my files stored. Since I have a brand new tail in Black Saphire, signed under the seat by Erik, and a brand new front fairing, never mounted, I just cant see repainting those, so I am going to trust the painter to work his magic....but he does have the tail and the front fairing to work from... | ||

In either 1995 or 96, I had three Black Sapphire bikes in the shop at the same time. All were original paint but yet all three were distinctly different. The paint process for pearls at the time made it very difficult to be consistent from batch to batch - and even harder to match a replacement piece. Often when a pearl painted part was ordered from Buell the damaged part would be requested to be returned for matching Sometimes when multiple attempts to match weren't successful, the entire bodyset set had to be returned to insure they'd match. When we lent our Bonneville Production "S2 to Buell for the IMS circuit (1996-97?), the fairing got damaged. An entire bodyset was given to us because, according to the East Troy paint team, trying to match it was too tough. Jolly - One point of this rambling post is that even if you have the correct paint, there are a lot of factors regarding how its applied and the environment in which it's applied - that can dramatically influence the final shade or tint. Another point is that if you end up having to repaint the whole set, because there was so much variety in the original paint, it would be tough for someone to confidently criticize your paint as being the wrong shade. Having new pieces though, definitely makes it worth the headaches of trying to match them. Anxious to see the results --- Good Luck! | ||

Absolutely agree. There's a long and winding history behind Buell paint . . . . starting wit the "Pearl Perils" . . . the "High Voltage Horror" and winding down with the "Mitigated Molten" and finally the no paint at all . . . which was revolutionary in motorcycling manufacturing. High Voltage Yellow was essentially impossible to match, due to fading. So, in 1997, during the development of the White Lightining, we took many of the returned tanks and painted them in about a dozen "candidate oranges". There were two tanks painted each color. One of each color went to the roof . . .the other to a dark closet in the back of the shop. They were periodically removed to find out what color, paint, process was the most fade resistant. Molten Orange won. Body work was a HUGE warranty cost. I have soem boxes with new S2 parts that have never been opened and I'll be curious to see what they look like. I also have a collection of many XB fairing and color impregnated parts which are essentially color fast. Thanks . . . in part . . . to Honda. But . . that's another story. :0 | ||

I thought I had an S2 photo . . . .but all the S2 body work was painted on a "buck" . . . set up to to position the parts as they would sit on the bike. The good news is that one of the top Buell painters . . . well, still is. | ||

I **think** although I don't know . . .that they are all Ice White Pearl. Funny story . . . during the days that the entire Buell Customer Service effort was Jennifer, Joanie and I . . there was no office space so they put us in a vacant office in a storage building across the drive from the main Buell building. We didn't have desks so they grabbed a bunch of large cardboard boxes and we pretty much made an office of these boxes. It wasn't until years later I, quite by accident, discovered that they'd accidentally used FULL boxes . . thinking they were empty. The weight of bodywork is tough to detect in a sealed box. Anyway . . .that's how I kind of inherited some bodywork . . . how I got the boxes of new shocks . . . I have no clue . . those babies are heavy.  | ||

Regarding paint, at one point if you ordered a replacement high voltage yellow tank (at least for warranty - maybe for all circumstances) you could have a new complete bodyset for the same price as a tank, in any color available except hi-voltage yellow. Lots of challenges for early Buell Customer Service. | ||
