I introduce to you the Pink Panther. My brother and I rescued this X1 off of craigslist. The PO broke up with his girl and she just went at it. Plan is the build it up and then get it to a good home. It has a salvage title that I would like to drop so if anyone has an extra clean title X1 frame around I'm interested.
Thanks
Bill

Let that be a lesson guys...

Never fall sleep first!

It looks like it is just spray bomb. Acetone/tacquer thinner will likely get most of it off.

Wow!!! Hahahaha he must have cheated on her or something for her to get that crazy. Wait, she is a woman, so I take that back! LOL

Some good rubbing compound or even Mothers aluminum Polish could probably put that paint off just about any of those pieces.

I say we get her address and send her all the junk motorcycle mail we can find ; )

Good luck with the rescue. This sounds crazy, but where I used to work we would use SPRAY PAINT to remove spray paint. Same solvents, you know it will break it down. Once what is underneath turns to liquid you wipe it off.

More like Pink Pegasus. Funny that she masked off the gauges.

She tagged the gauges also but we cleaned them off while working on getting it started.

Here you can see the original job on the gages!

The first pics were taken after completion of a test ride to make sure there wasn't any major problems.
I already started breaking it down for cleanup.

Nice, good luck with the rescue. Fun project!

Sometimes the salvage title can be cleared through the state, just going through a certification process... any idea why it's on a salvaged title now?

buggles, bike went down on the right side. It has the dent in the frame at the steering stop. Picked it up for a good deal and hope to get it all free and clear so that it will stay away from chopper bait the rest of its life.

Mine's got a ding in the frame too, forks hit it when I was cut off in traffic years ago. I'll take a pic if you'd like for comparison, clean title on mine, so I still gotta wonder if it is not a catastrophic injury to the frame, can the titled be cleared up? Prolly depends on the state.

Probably insurance salvage. Cost more to fix than to replace. The frame dent likely isn't a deal breaker with the state, just have to show that you spent money repairing it.

Ah, that makes sense Hoot, thanks... I ask these questions because some day I hope to find a nice stock, or tastefully upgraded/modded X1.

I have a 99 X1 frame with title but it was dated when it was signed (I bought it from someone else) so between shipping to CA and the penalties for not registering it I doubt it would be worth your while

I did some quick research into clearing the title but, california is one of the states that does not remove that branding at all.
Harleyms, I have a line on a frame with an undated title. If that falls through I will be in contact with you.

Why bother "Titlewashing" it?

Mismatched VIN/Engine numbers are as bad or worse, IMO, as a salvage brand on the title. It's California - lots of salvage titles out there, and for that very reason no one really cares when you are talking about a $4000 bike.

The kind of buyer who will care about the salvage branding is also going to care about the mismatched numbers.

Clean the paint off, fix it up, and keep it or sell it to a good home. The "title washing" is a lot of effort for no good reason.

Lynrd, I have a couple of reasons I want to clean the title on it.

First, if I invest the time to make this a nice bike I don't want to put all my effort into a frame that is branded for life. The engine/frame vin is already mismatched on this bike and from my experiences people are more worried/aware of salvage titles then mismatched vins.

Second, I do plan on selling this one, as I already have 2 X1s, and I think the salvage title puts a hard hit in the value. If I can get a clean frame to my door for a few hundred bucks I think I'd gain more in value then that.

Third, to me a Buell with a salvage title is about 10 steps closer to becoming a chopper. The last thing I want to see is this thing becoming a chopper so a little extra effort on my part to give it a clean bill of health could save it in the future.

Got it most of the way apart today and started cleaning some of the small parts to make reassembly, when it happens, faster. I pulled the oil pump and the drive gear looks fine, also looks like the cams aren't that old too. Now I just have to pull the primary and check the shoe.

Does anybody know if the starters on the 99 were suppose to be silver? This is the second 99 I've seen and both have silver starters but my 01 has a black one.

Sweet, wish I could bring myself to get in the over-time pool here at work, I'd love to buy a carefully restored X1 (and S1, and S2 maybe, but I'll need a bigger garage for that I think).

Its also silver on my '00. The black should blend nicely with the rest of the engine.

Today was a good day. I assembled the large pieces of the bike with the new frame and made a trip to DMV for vin verification/inspection. Everything went well and the pink panther should have a clean title in a couple of weeks. Here it is looking a bit better.

Now it's mostly broken down again to get the frame powder coated and start putting it back together.
