Moving into a space with a garage... let the winter projects begin. Been absent riding and wrenching. Here is What I did last winter in my living room and have since put 7,000km on it. The Winter goal for this beast is a ducati subframe and seat,Some powdercoat and paint, rear shock, new clutch plates, and a Turbo of course
Blew up the 97 S1 in May. crank pin done. When you hear a noise that is not right shut it down!
could of been worse So I had to do a crank up build with a 3 hole jims crank pin, welded pinion race, trued and balanced to 0.002 Pinion and sprocket side. And my initials stamped in the crank of course
Rebuilding the S1 and this is where I am at

Very cool. I'm interested in how it turns out. I did something similar years ago but using a lot of modified factory or factory race parts. |

Liking the way you chopped down the timing cover and exposed the drive pulley. I should have done it to mine years ago but then never got around to it. Still, there's time yet! Rocket in England |

You've done an awful lot of work to both bikes. I'll bet the X1 handles well. |

What's the purpose of chopping down the timing cover? Weight, style? I agree it looks sweet. |

Well I would love to take credit for the S1 but I did not do the original build. I am the second owner of the S1. Although I am rebuilding the engine crank up the cam cover was already chopped when I got it. The X1 will get the cam cover chop treatment... It exposes more of the engine and the excess aluminum on the cam cover serves 0 purpose. Here is how the S1 looked for 14,000km until I blew the crankpin. Paint is going to be different and a few small things here and there. When I got the X1 it was stock and I did a frame off build on that bike.

Is that a Spondon swingarm? Oops, my phone didn't update when you replied. You already answered. So are sweet swingarms, BTW. I had a Metmachex on a Ducati SS, but those Spondons are simply mean looking! (Message edited by Beardo on September 22, 2013) |

Carbo-Tech carbon fiber headlight bucket I've spent years looking for a Duc Monster cf bucket. Never heard of this one though. Please could you give us more close up detailed pics of some of the stuff on this very trick S1 Rocket in England |

@ Mighty Mouse - cutting back cam cover allows for re-routing of oil lines. The only thing I can think of for the "extra" metal on the cam cover is to act as a heat sink. |

If you are getting a lot of heat in that location...something is badly wrong - maybe your shoes are on fire? |

Although I really think that the subframe of the X1 is it's most signature piece, I am curious about that Ducati subframe project. |

Don Casto/x1 Files notes that the extra cam cover area has tons of webbing in the casting, for noise reduction purposes. |

The X1 exhaust is loud as F*** . I have to wear earplugs. The S1 is fine without hearing protection. I call BS on noise reduction purpose on the cam cover... Although The x1 is So loud with the Force I cant really compare the 2... Rocket_in_uk - what would you like a close up of?? http://www.gs-carbotech.com/ for the headlight bucket... dont know if they still make the one I have. |

Since it's a common part on the Sportsters, and those engines actually have to pass EPA stuff, the noise reduction thing actually does make sense. And an 883 with the factory exhaust is not quite the same as an X1 from a noise generation standpoint. The noise attenuated would be gear train noise, obviously, so dampening it might help sell the 50 year old engine design to a new 883 buyer, even though his first stop will be at the parts counter to buy a set of drag pipes so it can "Sound like a Harley". |

I love the paint on that S1, Snazzier than a pinstripe suit. plain elegant taste full it compliments the lines of the body work and the bike, with out taking away from it. And the rest is just ART! |

I'd like close ups of all of it, including the headlamp shell! It's a lovely Buell! How do you like having the 1/4 turn throttle? I've a Robby Moto fitted with the quickest cam. It turns through 45 deg and I love the control it gives me over the power delivery. I find it a seldom used upgrade for any bike, and one that is overlooked except by a few, yet its advantage when riding is fantastic. Rocket in England |

If you cut down your cam cover, it's wise to leave the rear pin boss in place. Keeps the cover from moving around.. Here's the one I did on my Cyclone years ago.

1/4 turn throttle is nice and the response is hands down amazing, That with the HSR42 makes this one excellent ride. As for the paint, the tank has bubbled really bad and I was able to peel the paint job off the tank... So this paint job is going. Never was a fan of the "chameleon" Purple, blue on this paint job. Its nice. But its not what I would of picked. Fortunately the body work is all Buell carbon. Sanding the paint off the carbon keeping the lines with a different colour scheme accenting the carbon as a center instead of the pearl silver. Hard to explain. It will look stunning, I do know this. looking into vacuum bagging the tank with Carbon to prevent this bubble nonsense from happening again. Or shelling out 1200$ for a alloy tank from holtworks. We will see how my tank adventure goes... Moving into my new space in a few days and putting this S1 together is my first priority. Sled season is here and snow is around the corner. Meaning more time to build up these 2 Buells. Will load up some more photos once I get the S1 into its new location |

Beautiful bikes Serialk. I have an X1 I would like to convert but I have not rounded up the XB parts yet. The cut down cam cover really enhances the Sportster style engine in my opinion. Also. I see Don Castro's X1 Files referenced by Fahren. I saved a link to that several years ago but it no longer works. Can anyone tell me how to access that site? |

http://thex1files.com/ Excellent read. Been away moving and riding. I am slowly removing the paint on the S1. I will be laying up the carbon on the tank in the next few days. Has anyone ever vacuum sealed carbon over/onto a Buell tank?? NO More Bubbles! |

Ive got photos somewhere of one that had been vacuum bagged with CF, looks incredible. I wanted to do one but couldn't find anyone with either the tools, experience or interest in doing a Buell tank.. If you would like to see photos, shoot me a note and I will dig them up. |

post em up if you can find them Jolly. I am still removing paint... Meanwhile... The X1 blew a rear tire. Insurance is off for the winter season and now the Ducati tail is getting fabed up and mock up for measurements/fitment This is going to look saweeeet!

Those are all beautiful bikes. I especially like the chrome frame contrasted against the black engine and body parts, really looks good. And I like the way it makes the tubular frame structure stand out too. How much would it cost to have a frame like that chromed? Back in the day chroming used to be pretty cheap. I'm guessing with the environmental laws being what they are today, that's no longer the case. |

Pretty cool. Is there anyone in the States who offers a carbon bagging service for our tanks? I think that I would just make a huge mess out of it if I purchased the supplies. |

Id sure like to find someone to do this!, I have photos somewhere, maybe on my other computer, that had done this as well then went out of business. I think the story was that the company got into making CF helmets then got into a liability legal issue and lost everything...don't quote me but I think that's how it went... anyway...is that filler neck anodized? what hand controls are those? (brake and clutch) |

Those hand controls are ISR. Amazing controls. http://www.isr-brakes.se/ I am going to do this to my tank this winter. will let you guys know how it goes! Just want to match up the carbon and weave to that of the Oem Buell Carbon. Oh and the X1 Frame is Nickle plated not chrome plated. cost in Vancouver Canada set me back $800 - blasted and dip for 8 hours. I think its worth every penny as I am never selling this bike |
