Just a heads up: if you order a Corbin seat, make sure that you specify exactly where the locating stud on the seat pan goes.
I had to relocate the seat latch on my X1W by a half inch. I wrote to them and told them that they put the hole for the stud in the wrong place so that they wouldn't do the same to future customers.
They asked me to send photos of the seats (which I did, including a ruler so they could see the difference in the mounting locations) and I was asked if the "mushroom pin was too wide" and that's why it didn't fit and I had to explain that the stud was the stock part so no, it's not too wide, it's simply in the wrong place.

Here's their response:

Seats are made out of a mold so brackets are in the sames location in the base pan ,Sometimes the rubber bumpers dont allow the seat to move forward all the way,and also the frint mounting tab that is wrapped in leather. You can bend the front tab a lil bit and also spray rubber bumpers with detailer to make em slippery and not bunch up and grip the frame

I then asked them to take a look at their engineering drawings of the seat pan and let me know where they show the mounting stud to be in relation to the rear of the seat and the response was something like the sound of crickets chirping.

I've dealt with them since the mid 1980s as both a customer and as a dealer and am just really surprised by the whole thing.
The order took twice the time they estimated (which is okay as I can understand a motorcycle business being busy during the Summer) but they addressed the issue by assuming that I'm too stupid to push a seat up all the way and when I asked them to double check their drawings they blew me off.
I wonder if Mike Corbin is still running the show or if he retired?

The angle of the photos is weird but the yardstick is flush with the end of the seat.

I don't know if I'll ever give them any more of my money but if you do, specify exactly where you want the mounting stud just in case.

I find my stock X1 seat quite comfortable. Never even considered "upgrading" it.

'I find my stock X1 seat quite comfortable. Never even considered "upgrading" it.'

How does that statement add to the useful nature of this thread??

I think this is why Al at American Sport bike does not handle their product. He may jump in here and say that he has several times in the past.

They are way too heavy anyway (or should that be weigh too heavy.) Looks like Sargent, Mustang, or BMS, well heck it looks like theres a lot of seat makers...

Besides the company issue how is the seat? Does it have a snug fit around the entire base? And is it worth the money?

That sucks. I've always wanted a Corbin too. The stock seat is OK for sub 1 hour rides but after that it does unspeakable things to me. Maybe they didn't trim the pan correctly when they took it out of the mold? I don't know their production process but it must be fairly hands on, might be a simple human error. Personally I'd send it back.

Has anyone tried Baldwin? The make good looking seats but how do they ride and hold up?

Owner of Baldwin is a Badweb member "Gowindward"

I do not have a Baldwin Seat but I have never heard a bad thing said about them.

I recently bought a beadrider set for my xb12scg and did a 1400+ mile three day weekend. I am really pleased with the comfort and airflow of this purchase. Way less expensive than a custom seat BTW.

I have a friend who bought Corbin the beetle hard bags and windshield for his valkerie. the bags had mounting bracket and hinge issues. the hardware was incomplete and the windshield bracket was 180 degrees off.

Your post confirms it, they have zero quality control.

I have a Corbin on my S2 and I can now use the seat latch.

I have used many different style Corbins on many different bikes. I cannot say I have ever had a problem with them. Things are bound to happen when human hands are involved...

The seat itself is very nice, it fits perfectly (once I modified the motorcycle!) and they did the "Ball Job" which scoops out a section for the family jewels.
It's much better than the Corbins I've had for the S3 and S1 which really aren't all that comfortable.
They did a good job but they just screwed up the post location so I'd recommend specifying exactly where the hole needs to be drilled or else you'll have aluminum chips flying like I did when you relocate the seat latch.

Went a different route but made a world of difference. Bought my boy a Bell memory foam seat cover for his bike, one ride and he didn't like it. So instead of tossing it I thought I'd give it a try on the X1. I cut it down the center to give it a gap for the boy's to rest in and the wider pads of the foam cover more of the ass area instead of just on the bones. Pulled back the cover, sprayed with adhesive and covered back up with new staples. First ride out and I could tell a difference. I found another bell pad that's more wider with the memory foam might try it later down the line.

The pic was taken right after I got off the seat. After about 5 min you can't even tell it's there.

I have a "Baldwin saddles" seat on my S3T...I highly recommend reaching out to him and having him make you a seat. OUTSTANDING customer service...he makes seats one at a time, and custom fit. you send in photos and measurements of you on your bike and he custom makes a seat for you. I had an issue that I was not completely satisfied with on how it fit my riding position and we discussed it, took more photos, sent the seat in and he fixed it...NO QUESTIONS OR EXCUSES!..really quality construction and again...outstanding customer service. I have a corbin on my X1...wish I didn't, the model for the seat must have been over 6' tall....its a deep cut seat! I also have a corbin for my S1...eh...Ill keep it...but....

Jolly,
Could you post a picture of your S3 seat?

I sold a LOT of Corbin seats for Guzzis in the 90's and it just seemed like I was dealing with a different place this time.
With Mike Corbin gone, well, no wonder.

Steve,
for the record, I have a gunfighter and lady model. i did need to do a little bit of adjusting to the length of the locating stud, but the seat does fit fine and IMHO is a huge improvement over the stock seat I named (affectionately) "nut crusher".

I'm a self proclaimed idiot who's done two 1000 mile days on the X1 and a fair number of 700+ days. The corbin made all the difference when you ride that far.

I've had mine for quite awhile, and never had any issues so I never contacted them. The seat has held up well, although there is some wear in the tank junction area. Given the mileage I have on it and that I basically do nothing to maintain it, I find it acceptable.

Bummer on your experience, it sucks to see what was an iconic brand fall off the mark. You'd think high end companies would like loyal customers. Guess word of mouth advertising is losing value to some entities

That stock seat is the pits, all right, and the Corbin is going to break in and be very comfortable (in a hard sort of way).
I'll post some pics of the bike shortly once I give it a bath and put on a different canister tomorrow afternoon.

Please post the pictures of the seat to the thread or PM me, I'd like to see the seat. I'm actually looking at buying a '98 S3T right now, so I'm looking at all upgrade options and what have you.
Thanks!

If your interested in more comfort you could just repack your own seat I'm sure it will be way cheaper and would give you a nice winter project if you don't have one going after a long way of searching and trying to decide which I've decided to do my own like that. Just go to your local fabric shop and they should have everything you need all you really need is sewing skills glue fabric stapler razor and loads of patience
