I have a 01 X1 with "race" ecm and a buell race exhaust. I know the packing in the muffler is definitely gone and i wouldnt mind it being a bit louder. So my question is, if i weld up a muffler delete for my bike using the same diameter and length tubing as the race muffler, will this effect my bike besides it being louder. like mess with how it runs.

Yes it will mess with it. I will run badly and some serious diminished power on low end, You will notice right away! I have tried 4 different muffler configurations and once without a muffler. Not a good idea!

The interior of your race muffler is a perforated core, wrapped with packing that fills the chamber. It is not a straight pipe. Straight pipes will kill your low and midrange. If you're going to treat your throttle like an on/off switch...go for it, and be prepared for the flat spots all over the powerband.

If you want noise, get a D&D, or a V&H, or if you can find one, a Force system. I wouldn't run without the packing in the muffler for long, you'll start to break stuff in there.

i ran open header on my dragbike for a while...yeah, its only for topend

Force systems are still to be found, sometimes for amazing deals (mine was less than fifty shipped in good condition, used)
I love my force, and they are a great company to deal with as far as parts etc

bought my M2 with a straight pipe under it. Went from that to a stock muffler, then a V&H. Each change was an improvement, but it did sound like a race track (except for the popping every shift) when I had the straight pipe on.

my bike came with the race system when i bought it. i dont have to stock system and paying over $500 for a muffler/headers is retarded. I guess i will just refurb my race system.

Nothing wrong with the race system. Some say the D&D is louder, but I think they are about the same. I have one of each. They're both perf tube and stuffing. The D&D is a bit deeper IMHO.

Race system can't be beat. The repack kit is cheap. Maybe you can repack the muffler with less packing if you want it louder?

yeah i can repack it for cheap, i already have it apart. I might weld up a drag pipe with a little baffle in it for fun to see how it sounds and performs. i already have the tubeing, coupler, and welder sitting around so i wont lose anything.

If you "wouldn't mind it a little louder," why not put the race muffler back on without repacking it? Does the packing have any purpose except to make it quieter? Or is it an issue with the tone of the sound?

No issue with the sound, i love how it sounds but wouldnt putting the race muffler back on without packing almost be the same as welding up a drag pipe? With that route i could also save 15 lbs on the bike without the race muffler. correct me if im wrong

Coxster, what issues did you have going back to the stock muffler?? If any. My M2 had the same thing when I got it. I'm an old head and don't think loud pipes save lives. Got a stock muffler from the BW..
I want to put it on after my redo .

Buellistic, what say you.

I had no issues going back to stock except for getting the right bushings/spacers/etc for the front mount. I don't have the new mount, but all the old stuff fit perfectly. I was gonna cut up the OEM Buellistic style, when a BWB posted a V&H for sale with a busted mount. I've got about 4 hours in that mount, and the best performance I've had so far.

If you pack it harder, not looser you will get more sound. Also the packing material makes a difference. Ceramic vs glass vs stainless steel.

Some of you'll feel "i" should give my "IMHO" comments ...

My BUELL is a 1997 S3T ...

"i" am only interested in MOD'ing what ever came on the bike off the SHOW ROOM FLOOR and some times RETRO FITTING later better performing OEM parts ...

Also like to tune for best performance in the RPM range where "i" ride ...

Well here goes:

The 1997 model year had a small inlet muffler and the 1998 model year had a larger inlet muffler so "i" did the retro fit to the 1998 muffler ...

Made a REVERSION CHAMBER so the 1998 muffler would fit my 1997 exhaust header ...

Put a muffler outlet(same size as on the left) on the right rear and did not plug the left outlet ...

Designed the outlet so that a little tuning could be done on its leinght ,,,

If anyone wants to discuss why and what "i" did, just PM me and we can discuss these product improvements by phone ...

"PLUS": no repacking, fatigue cracks, or falling apart ...
