I'm guessing 2019 is when the factory support for parts ends.

Not for me LaFeyette. My local Harley dealer now has better access to Buell parts than ever.

The dealer that used to actually inventory parts (as opposed to order them with the 3 to 5 day turnaround) got forced by Harley to move out of their little dumpy store, and had to build a "destination store" for many millions of dollars, and as a result went out of business and had to be sold. FU HD. The new buyer doesn't feel the need to stock parts (and indeed probably can't afford too, given the retail footprint they have to maintain). But that all happened before HD screwed Buell.

I had t owait a month for a color keyed airbox for the Uly, but that was kinda par for the course also. I would expect the same for "painted" parts from most manufacturers.. if they would indeed stock them at all.

So if anything, the Buell parts situation seems to have gotten better, not worse. Probably because Harley has to actually own and live with their solution now, rather then keep "helping" BMC "do it better".

Are you talking about Buckeye HD in north Dayton?

Sorry to hear F&S went out. They used to do a huge parts business to the aftermarket - was one of Arlen Ness' main sources back in the day.

Dealership I worked with had a policy that you had to turn any part 4 times a year to keep one on the shelf. The shop previously had been owned by a real Harley enthusiast and we had a LOT of downright weird and esoteric inventory on hand...want an original HD 65A generator? - we have it...

The new Dealer was a Moto Guzzi enthusiast and really viewed the HD deal as a way to support his habit (*ahem*)and make easy money - this was the early '90s when you would have to be an idiot to not be able to sell any bike Harley you could get your hands on. Back in the days of waiting lists and dealer allocations...

With the inventory policy that the new dealer had, when we sold those weird parts, we almost never reordered. And at the 4 turns a year policy, even stuff that I knew damn well WOULD sell if on hand, would be special order only. So, when you didn't have it, the customer would likely look elsewhere, and not try again for more parts if needed quickly, as well as buy all the gaskets, lube, etc for whatever they were doing.

We had lots of nice T-shirts, though.

It felt like we were perpetually going out of business due to the ongoing inventory reduction. The dealership changed names and locations, but not bull headed management style until eventually selling out to new management.

Funny thing, we actually were a Buell Dealership back in 1992 - had a RS1200 sitting on the floor. God I lusted after that thing.

The F&S owner was one of the original owners (forget if he was F or S). When you walked back to the service area, there was a huge stack of 10 or so XR750 motors still in crates. When I was dyno testing my 9sx, he came back to see what was on the dyno and we talked for a while.

This was when the Harley "boom" was still not quite a bust, and he was really worried about how much it was going to cost to build the new shop. He was right.

Aces and Eights, which is the shop he had just returned from visiting, also over committed building their new facility. Their owner ended up dead at his kitchen table about the time he was going out of business, his wife tried to keep running it for a while, and they went out of business and got bought out as well.

With friends like HD corporate, who needs enemies...
