I have a race header on mine with a modified V&H SSR muffler. It works and sounds really well.

Supertrapp, finely tuned with 17 discs, closed end.

At age 54, I don't like too much noise anymore, so I mounted a stock muffler and the bike sounded like a new BMW. Couldn't even hear the engine anymore; needed to stare at the tach to make sure when to shift.

Is your thinking with 17 discs for your best tuning? If you cut down to 8 or 10 for quieter, would that kill performance too much?

My S2 had a D&D slip on on it when I bought it. I replaced it with a Force exhaust, repaired it a couple times, replaced it with another Force exhaust, and repaired it numerous times. Love the sound and performance, hate the reliability. Of course it's super-loud, so more or less only for us "young'ns" that don't care about our hearing (what ? Lol).

Sportyeric - I ran a V&H for years - put 1 washer on each bolt on the dogbone - lowered the muffler just enough to clear the adjustment screw and didn't have to put dents into the muffler.

Fahren - I run about that many discs (17, but have to count). I tuned it for noise at one point, down to about 8 discs. With a closed endcap, it fell on its face. I have Thunderstorm top end, X1 cams, and an S1W ignition box.

Simply swapping to an open endcap gave it life again.

I installed more discs with the open endcap, to "filter" the noise a bit. Less "blat" with more discs.

Yes, reducing discs can cause a noticable difference.

Someday I'll find a reasonably priced OEM muffler (I don't mind that BMW sound, I'm starting to like things quiet), or a Buell race muffler. The race can breathes great, but the sound frequencies are low enough they don't resonate in my helmet nearly as much as the Supertrapp's more midrange-frequency-sound.

Joe,

Consider D&D. They sound very similar to the Buell race can. I have the Buell part on my S2 and the D&D on my X1.

I've ridden D&D's. I compare them more to V&H than to a Buell Race can...just flat LOUD (got an M2 here now that I'm putting a transmission in, actually, that has a D&D on it).

If your Buell can sounds like the D&D...it's time to take off the endcap and repack it!! : )

The other one I like (I don't make anything easy for myself) is the Borla.

2.5" inlet sounds like S1W or later 98 S3

You're right, I brain-farted on the "W". 2.5" is a thunderstorm header.

Although...something is telling me a non-S2 "s" header won't clear the "crooked" S2 air filter...?
