Get an automotive spacer, 2" to 2.5", and you can use a Buell race can. Perfect length. I did it for years on my S2, and may go back to it unless I can find a nice stock muffler. That Supertrapp is pissing me off... | ||

The supertrapp is "blatty". It puts out a midrange-audio frequency that severely disagrees with my ears and helmet. Pink noise, if you will. I much prefer sweet silence (stock exhausts on the Uly and CR), or a deeper rumble like the factory race muffler. | ||

I have a supertrapp on my S2. Been trouble free for 17 yrs. I had V & H, and race mufflers on my other Buells.....(with a fair amount of breakage). Like RB said.....The supertrapp sound leaves a little to be desired......(but I am putting the "new" 2 1/2 inch supertrapp on the S2. Hope it sounds better. Ride safe.....Jack | ||

Here's a place to hang a question. My Vance and Hines, I've just noticed, contacts the primary adjustment screw. I'm considering pounding a dent into the muffler for clearance.I know people have done that for tranny oil changes but I don't remember it being so tight before. Anyone else with a V&H on an S2? | ||

I had supertrap and the V&H mufflers. The suppertrap left soot all over the back of the bike an sound all that great, The V&H muffler sounded good but kept braking the mounts on the elbow. I replaced the whole get up with a system from American Sport Bike. It sounds good is light and it brings the muffler up along side the swing arm like a more conventional sportbike exhaust. It makes changing tranny oil loads easier. (Message edited by shot_gun on May 07, 2012) | ||

I have a carbon fiber V&H slip on and have had many problems with breaking the stainless wrap mount that secures it to the bike. Broke 4 of them until I rubber mounted it. It sounds great. I have a stainless V&H as a backup. Never liked the supertrapp. (Message edited by 96s2t on June 10, 2012) | ||

Just to clarify, the IDS muffler is NOT much like the race muffler. It was marketed as a "race slip-on" back in the day, for folks who didn't want to spring for the complete race system that included header, muffler, intake, and ignition box. The IDS muffler is a chambered, add-or-remove-discs-to-tune, Supertrapp. The Buell Race muffler is a single-cavity muffler packed with fiberglass or other media, and requires repacking from time to time. Completely different animals. Similar sound depending how you tune the IDS muffler, but VERY different internals. | ||

Fahren, Yes...thick rubber washers to take the stress off the pipe when it is bolted to the bike. About the Supertrapp. I believe this pipe is great if you are racing at different tracks with changes in altitude and you are experimenting with carbs etc. Adding plates is a great way to tune the pipe. As a road rider I don't like the way it looks and don't like the soot that goes everywhere. The V&H has the look, nice sound and resonable power numbers. You can also remove half the packing for a fuller sound. I have done this and have over 70,000 miles on it and it still doesn't need repacking. I did experiment with no packing and it seemed to loose bottom end power and was a bit too loud.For me, V&H was the only choice. | ||

I'm not yet sold on the Supertrapp (external discs). Depending on the build of the bike, and how much you want to optimize power, you may end up with a ton of discs and a really loud pipe. I need to re-pack mine, see if that makes any difference. It had what almost looks like a canvas-wrapped packing material in around the core when I pulled it apart. Some sort of fireproof fabric wrap around insulation? | ||

I just put on the carbon fiber V&H but I don't have the original mounting. I improvised using the stock muffler drop bracket and heavy duty hose clamps. Sounds like i will take spare clamps with me and check it frequently. I also repacked it as there was no packing in it. I was unable to find stainless steel wool to use on short notice. So I used a coarse regular steel wool and then wrapped that with fiber glass pipe insulation, then covered with a tube of aluminum made from dryer duct. I did this after seeing photos of the carbon fiber cans melted from heat after losing the packing. So the aluminum is a liner to protect the carbon fiber. My only concern is that the regular steel wool will rust from the exhaust moisture and send bits of rusty metal shooting out the back. I will pull it apart after I get back from the S2 Roundup and see how it did after 5000 miles of riding. | ||

Go to your local M/C dealer and buy the correct repacking material for aftermarket dirt bike exaust systems. Get rid of the aluminum and steel wool. | ||

Maybe next time. I did a lot of searching and found lots of good input on using steel wool, only difference here is it isn't stainless steel. Using the steel wool and fiberglass wrap let me wrap the core before inserting it, unlike the dirt bike packing where you have to stuff it in. The aluminum I will keep, it matches the outer shell like a second skin and adds a lot of support and protection to the carbon fiber shell. Its not wrapped around the core, it is an insert on the outer shell. But for now, it is going on a long ride. Ultimate test bench. | ||
