On a stock X1, I'm sure it's doing both. The rear cylinder, being blocked by the front, will run hotter. The space between the oil tank and rear head allows for airflow and to keep the oil away from the rear exhaust port, which is the hottest part on the bike while running.

This custom job puts it all very close and, while not detrimental to operation, I'm sure it runs hotter as a result.

Of course he lives in Canada, so he may not care!

I think that bike looks nice, but in my opinion it is more form than function. I questioned the oil tank myself, as the original is molded plastic and will not pull heat off of the rear jug (which gets real hot) as that one will. The S2 has a nice welded plate oil tank, but it is farther back and insulated somewhat from the rear jug.

The S2 tank is also hanging off the side of the bike opposite of the exhaust port.

I don't know that what the tank is made out of make too much difference - aluminum takes on heat faster but it also sheds it faster, as well.

Old school Vincents and Nortons had lots of nice cool fog running over their engines when in their native habitat, and Canadians have snow much of the time. I like the look of this piece of art, but agree that the choice of location for the oil tank is unfortunate.

That is a nice looking fuel tank. I'm sure it was a lot of work ..... But .. This bike seems out of proportion. To tall and to wide ..

This Cafe Racer bike is the subject of a feature article in a Canadian motorcycle magazine last month, can't remember which one (yes, there are several)..which is probably why it suddenly appeared on ebay...The article describes the process of conversion in detail.

But to describe a Buell, any Buell, as a "perfect designed bike as-is"...perfect?...now that does make me laugh. What world are you in? I can't imagine anything less true. ..and I love Buells, but they are many miles (and kilometers) from being "perfectly designed".

What is true about some of these other posts is the fact that (we) Canadians don't worry too much about bikes overheating and tend to prefer full face helmets (to keep warm). Its also why Canadians are such good motorcycle mechanics...because there is nothing else you can do with your bike for half the year except work on it.

Merry Christmas
