Here's an idea I've been bouncing around for quite some time. The motus will probably sticker for around $20k. What sort of S2 or S3 could you re-build from the ground up to compete performance wise for half the price? I have been thinking about finding a ratty s2 and saving it from the chop and remaking the bike. What mods would you make and what would you do to it? If I can pull this off in the years ahead, it'll be pretty cool. |

I have a 96 S2t that I love, and I think the S2 might be the prettiest bike ever made, so the S2 seems like the best candidate, But I'm open to ideas. |

Partial List of Ideas- Cut off the sidestand bracket and move it and replace with one that doesn't suck. Modify Uly Bag brackets so I can use my Uly bags with it (painted to match of course) I'd like a torque monster of a motor that pulls like a locomotive. XB style front brakes with the last generation of caliper / master cylinder Could an XB swingarm be made to fit? Am I insane? |

No doubt you could build up an awesome S2 for $20G. The insane part is, it would still only be worth $3-5G. I'm in the middle of something similar, hopefully it won't end up at $20G, but I've got 5 in the motor... rt |

The challenge is to do it for $10K. The theme that keeps bumping around my head is what if the S2 had stayed in production and gone through the evolution of updates. XB wheels with perimiter brakes, the auto tensioning belt, (keep the old gauges cause they look awesome), updated bags.... |

So you want a Uly XT? |

I have an 06 Uly. I love it. There's something about sitting 'in' that S2 that does it for me. The personality of a tuber with performance that far exceeds the Uly. Maybe what I need is an XB donor bike? |

Easy for what *I* would do:
- 88" big bore kit
- Thunderstorm heads
- Thunderstorm exhaust from a 1998 S3 or S1W
- Stock air cleaner with modified backing plate to allow the S3 header
- S1W cams & ignition module
- Full-optioned Works Performance Shock (or a WP identical to the one on the later Westwinds)
- The magnesium Dymag wheels over in the classifieds
- Stock PM brakes
- Maybe some aftermarket rotors, maybe not
- Subtly designed, CNC machined replacement side plates, shifter and brake pedals...not because I like the 'billet' look but, to make it look neater than the castings
- Custom fiberglass bags, pulled from the original deep-lid S2 shapes but, I'd redesign the mounting scheme.
- Something subtle from the HOK paint catalog, in the spirit of all Buells from that era but, different enough so you know it's not original--a color that they might have picked but didn't
It would look almost the same as now, have the best of the Buell engine parts, with the extra cubes to shift the whole powerband down 1000 RPM, reduced unsprung weight and bags that don't crack and fall off. Other than that, I can't think of much else to do |

Got to have fuel injection along the lines of the 1125 or other modern bike.Ditto on the late XB or 1190 style wheels and brakes. And why not full Ohlins suspension. |

>>> The motus will probably sticker for around $20k. More like $40 or $50K judging by the statements made by the Motus folks. Their target is limited production top shelf components. There's a video interview with the principle Motus man on that subject on YouTube I think. |

I don't get it, why is motus sticking with a big inch pushrod tractor motor? I would think that with a clean slate, an American "Sportbike" whether it be OHC V4 or inline, would at least have a higher tech engine. These guys had the ability to create something to compete with foreign bikes, I agree, with the claims they're making, there is no way I will ever afford one. It is one sweet looking bike, although it looks like the exhaust is real close to where your knees go. |

I can easily fantasize about $ 5,000.00 more in upgrades to my M2. More than I paid for it originally. The last couple times I went to the Cycle World motorcycle show, out of all the new bikes on display, I didn't find a single thing I would rather have, if I could only have one. (Which is pretty much the case right now.) Found plenty I would like 'in addition to', sure. |

I like the "idea" of XB wheels and brakes on an S2 . Actually, I've thought about this numerous times. For $20K, I'd build a blacked out X1 motor in similar fashion to Russ's X1, but blacked out and on S&S cases and 88" (around $9K), have airtech make me a one-off set of carbon bodywork and bag lids (about $4500 since last spoke about the idea). Put Showa race forks with 1190RS wheels/brakes, penske shock, and reinforce the steel swingarm (probably around $4K), a BMS saddle, and spend the rest on assorted billet pieces, digital gauges, and LED lighting and powder coating the frame, swingarm, and wheels deep red. Oh, and I'd fix the kickstand and bag mounting/latches . (Message edited by Phelan on November 04, 2011) |

Also, the fender would be a carbon fiber fender like the one I had (pictured above), but new. And since the fairing will be custom made, I'd have the center of the bottom of it raised about an inch for more clearance (in a smooth fashion) and possibly change the headlight to stacked bulbs frenched into the fairing, similar to the Duc 999. |

Oh, and I'd use an X1 tank to make the EFI work. And the Carbon Bodywork would have the '99 X1 "snouts" in the tank cover. |

>>> I don't get it, why is motus sticking with a big inch pushrod tractor motor? Being there is some commonality in architecture, would you also call characterize the Corvette engine as a tractor motor? |

Now we're getting somewhere. Anyone get anywhere with a dependable turbo? Buell did ink a deal to do one but HD killed it, so it could be 'historically plausible'... |

Come to think about it, I'd probably be happy with XB wheels with a ZTL2 caliper and EBR rotors, to save about $2K in the budget for more stuff, like digital gadgets and more billet parts, like one of Purpony's matching billet pulleys . (Message edited by phelan on November 04, 2011) |

I'm leaning towards staying away from the high dollar stuff like ohlins where possible and staying with the best stuff that Buell ever made and in the case of a turbo or big bore kit or... or whatever, stuff Buell 'could' have made. It'll be like Buells Greatest Hits Volume S2t. So yes, XB wheels, ZTL brakes, EBR parts... (Message edited by slipperypete on November 04, 2011) |

I just realized your challenge was for $10K . In that case, skip the carbon bodywork and S&S 90" motor, and give me a '99 X1 motor with a modified '96 Race exhaust and S2 shaped Hurricaneflow A/C. |

On the $20K budget, I forgot to also mention working in a 6-speed tranny . If I did all the labor that would pay for the transmission. |

An exaggeration at best, but what I'm trying to convey is that for such a big motor, I don't see how they are able to claim 530lb weight. Couldn't they get those hp numbers with a DOHC V4 with smaller displacement? I don't understand why they would go with big inch pushrod motor rather than a smaller displacement OHC, the benefit would be higher RPM even if the motors weighed the same. |

Definitely less maintenance with a pushrod motor, which is a huge plus on a sport-tourer. |

Higher rpm on a sport touring car or motorcycle is not an improvement. People have to spend hours inside or on those tin cans. If they made a 500 horsepower 2000cc 4-cylinder motor for the Corvette it wouldn't be a Corvette anymore. Anyone here ever wax nostalgic for his old Fiero or Chevette GT? Big inch pushrod motors give the rumble you feel in your spine instead of the scream that ruins your ears. That's what American roads deserve. |

Put one of the latest Buell X B motored in it. Or Put in one of the 1125 motors. You can pick one up between 1,000-2,500 dollars. Solid mount it to eliminate the isolators. I have been thinking of this with my extra s2 frame. Now to get motor money. |

1125 motors have OHC's, and friggin scream. Corvette motors too! The new Coyote Ford 5.0 is also an OHC and cranks out the hp. Besides that, when has a HD motor ever been considered "low maintenance"? |
