So, let’s give this another shot. It seemed like there was some confusion about what this part actually fixed so I'll attempt to clear that up. Often, the black plastic piece that connects to the "gas cap lock tab" will wear out and cause the "gas cap lock tab" to spin independently of the black plastic part (the part that locks the cap in place.) This causes the inability to unlock the gas cap - the "gas cap lock tab" simply turns freely. This kit replaces the center of the black plastic piece with stainless steel to prevent this from happening or fix an already failed part. I finally got a quote from the machinist for prices of the gas cap part. The next step is to see how many people are actually interested so I can order the right amount. Here is the cost breakdown: 10 $25.00ea 20 $18.00ea 30 $16.25ea 100 $11.00ea I am selling these at cost as a thank you to the Buell forums, so these prices plus a dollar or two for fasteners and however much shipping will cost will be what you pay. If there’s enough interest I’ll go ahead and buy them and get instructions (with pictures) up on the forum asap. Also, you’ll need: 1/2 inch drill bit 1/16 inch drill bit (pilot) 5/64 inch drill bit Small chisel (optional) File or razor (to clean things up) I think that’s all I needed to say: oh yea, try to be patient, it may take some time. Oh yeah, please post here if you are interested (as opposed to PM or email.) Here’s the part and the whole thing put back together for those of you who missed the initial post.

I haven't had any issues with any of my caps, but 25.00 bucks is probably cheaper then a new cap. |

How much work needs to be done by the buyer? I see there are bolt holes that need to be drilled and a chisel and file etc, just curious. Thanks |

You can get just the plastic part from this place: http://www.batinc.net/aero.htm http://www.newton-equipment.com/index.html they're Aero 400 caps. Funny thing is the entire cap sells for like $200 from them. But the plastic part is around $20. Someone else posted that info and has bought the plastic part from the Florida company. Filler rings are pretty cheap too. Though, I like the idea of just saving a stripped cap -- I have two stripped! |

Hybridmomentspass: There is a little work but its not all that difficult. Basically, you need to drill the large hole in the center, and clean it up with the file/razor. The chisel is to take off the lettering on the bottom of the plastic piece so the part fits flatter. Then you need to fit the new part and drill pilot holes, then the slightly larger holes then screw it down with the three screws and you're done. I'll put up more complete directions when I get a chance. Also, does Daveswans's bit of information change anyones' mind? (Message edited by matrim on September 08, 2011) |

I'd rather improve the part I have on my bike now, rather than buy parts that will eventually wear out again. The part Matrim's machinist friend has designed seems like it will improve and increase the life of the stock cap for my bike. I'm in for one, two if it helps the cause. |

Good news, It seems as if we are pretty much at the 18 dollars a piece mark. Thanks for all the interest. How much longer do you guys think I should wait before I go ahead and order them? Risking arrogance, I felt it necessary to correct Littlebuggles. I drew up the part in ProE and gave the design to the machinist. |

If only I didn't need correcting so often That's cool that you designed it. There are a lot of clever minds that hang out here on the bad web. I keep hoping some if it might rub off on my but it doesn't seem to be happening. |

I'd be in for one. P.S. - anyway this can keep the cap from locking? I get scared to death of breaking the key every time I use it. I have no need to lock my gas cap. |

I'm in for 2 please. I took a fender washer that I had cut points into and heated it up until the tips were glowing, then pressed the plastic part into it. Your solution is so much more precise |

Court, this procedure does not affect the locking mechanism at all. That said, locking the cap with your key shouldn't be necessary (I never lock mine.) If it vibrates locked and you don't have your key you can pretty much use anything to unlock it (the gas cap locks aren't key specific.) Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Brother in buells I don't mind shiping outside the US as long as you know that shipping will be more. |
