my front iso is ripped ,, i just ordered a knew one.. i am going to try and replace it myself.. i downloaded the service manual but i can not find any clear way to remove it... where and how hard is it to replace??? thanks guys

I got some tips for you.
Pop the tank out and turn it sideways out of the way.
Cut the cable ties in the harness (NOT the harness itself!) this will allow you to move the bundles of wires aside to get at the mounting bolts with a box end wrench.

Support the engine with a floor jack under the heavy part of the engine. This will allow you to adjust the height of the engine to line up the bolts with the new ISO.

So far, I haven't been able to get any torque wrench in there and have been just making it "tight".

why thank you. i was just looking at it and it seems pretty simple but a pain in the ass,, i have the torque specs and i think i might be able to get the torque wrench on idk i guess i will find out

Neil, if I could do it (twice) then it can't be that hard...
I suggest to take the tank off the bike but make sure you relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting it from the filter. And make sure you put a piece of wood (small 2X4) between the jack (I used scissor jack) and the case. Just lift it enough to take pressure off the center bolt so you can remove it. Then once you remove the center and side bolts lower the jack just a tad and you can take the iso out. I was able to torque all the bolts - used 5/16" crow foot wrench for the sides and an extension for the center bolt. The size escapes at the moment. And finally make sure you use the torque values from the kit instructions The FSM values are much higher and correspond to the old design.

Don't know what it means but...

I have a 99 X1 with the original front isolator. Nothing wrong with it, and it has over 50K miles on it.

The S2 I just picked up has about 15K, and the isolator was torn when I got it.

ok i just got my iso out, it took 30 min, 2 beers, and some swearing but was not that hard.. i went to get the new one and now it will not be in until friday. !!!!!!

ok now that i have replaced the front iso and have been riding , i noticed now that the bike shakes a little more.. the motor does not shake around in frame just everything shaking.. is that the new stiffer iso or what.

I thought the same thing when I replaced my front iso. It is possible the new one is stiffer by design or may be stiffer just cause its new. I'd run it for awhile the feeling will go away.

A "STRONGER ISOLATOR" means you will get "MORE VIBRATION" !!!

Does the last BUELL front isolator kit come with a "SHIM" for the smaller isolator to motor mount mounting bolt ???

My question is why would you go to a smaller mounting bolt when the engine hangs from from it and the H-D BIG TWIN
ENGINE SITS on it ???

yea crap is found when bikes are developed, and safety recalls happen. They had a bit of time to figure out the front isolator.

Id install according to the factory instructions. If you dont, do so at your own risk. Its only something the engine hangs from so i trust what the factory says on that matter.

Great point. And just to add, do you know of any engineers who have died while testing their own designs? Of course as an engineer by profession I can say that....
Anyway, going back to the topic at hand, if you look at the instructions sheet you'll see there are all sorts of washers between the isolator and the frame. In my opinion the major design improvement in the new isolator is the concave shape of the rubber being less prone to shear and twist tear which appears to be the prevalent mode of failure as seen the picture posted above.

Do you not remember when the size of the BOLT, isolator to motor mount was completely discuss'ed some time ago on BWBers and the hole in the isolator was being drilled out by those BUELLers that installed them to the OEM bolt size???

I don't remember the exact size but the new (center) bolt is definitely smaller than the old one. Either way time will tell how the new design will hold up.

Has anyone ever seen a cutaway of the old iso vs. the new? It would only make sense that if they shrunk the bolt that something on the internals of the iso itself was enlarged? Im still getting familiar with my S3, but this iso debate is very interesting!

Ok, maybe dumb question, but in the link Fahren threw up the new iso pictured is a 16207-79D, but if I go on American Sportbike Al has iso 17025-B as the updated and newest design, I trust that Al would have his facts straight. Like i said im still getting to know my S3 but when the time comes I wanna be sure i get the right one. This debate remind me of the "Red seal vs. Black seal" wheel bearing saga!
