To each their own.

Just doesn't seem right to cut up such a nice bike.

Beauty of a hard tail though. Bummer that it was a 96 S1, but yeah, there's a lot of good parts he unbolted that will hopefully make it into the used parts market.

Seat and tail, fenders, fairing, frame...

I read through the whole thread and have to say at least he's doing a clean job of it. It will be very nice once complete. There are some nasty (as in bad) horrific choppers out there that are made from Buells. This is definitely not one of those.

Gotta wonder about all those take off parts though, hmmmm...

Absolutely Tragic!

The donor was a lovely bike.

Sad S1 day.

Well, sir, I don't like it.

That's always a bummer. I miss the days when people chopped up Sportsters. I believe those chops look better, as well (when done right).

I've always been tempted to do a road race style conversion to the previous generation of XL's

The Spondon frame kit would be another nice one

It would bring some balance back to the Force

I see it's not completed, probably never will be. It will be a Craigslist ad - "over 15K invested, sacrifice for 14K"

..a Spondon frame IS a work of art..expecially the welds;seen several with thumpers in them in the AFM classes and they, without a doubt, are wow.Never saw a buggered weld on any of those frames(almost like they got a 60yr old guy in a shed that does nothing but the welding..never missing a beat and perfect EVERY time)....

Even the guy's dog looked sad and confused.

Why is a metal tank called an "oil bag"?

Did they used to be made out of pigskin or something?

..Rick_a..there was a guy,a ways back in the Seattle area, that did that too ,i believe a Sportster(was back in the early 90's).Don't really remember his name(could of been Jim-------, even don't know his last name). Was maybe in his early 20's and was doin' pretty good then(his mom and dad were always at the track being part crew and cheering section and they had,if i remember right, a Rottweiller).I remember the Rott cuz the dog was really friendly and was like a puppy for several years old.Now this is buggin' me..sorry i can't remember his name for sure and any other info.....

O M G on that picture

Jayvee - I've never understood that one either, why they call them oil bags instead of tanks. Must be some hip thing for choppers/bobbers, I dont know.

I don't think the guy is doing a bad job with it...I just can't see starting with such a nice classic bike.

Maybe he should have cut up an X1 instead?

It will be very nice once complete
But it will still be just another chop. In ten to fifteen years it will be worthless. I watched this happen the first time in the late sixties and early seventies. When the style changed those bikes just disappeared never to be seen again, I guess they go parted out. In twenty years that S1 would have been a classic, go price unmolested late sixties BSA's.

Yeah, look at the fad of all the big dog choppers and such. Big ass huge 330mm rear tires and a rake a mile high. I never see any of those guys anymore...those bikes looked ridiculous.

I cant agree fully on the fad part, there have been bikes of this style for a very long time.
But 'fad'....yes, I'll agree. The bobber thing has really blown up the past few years
And I understand why, youre building a custom bike for really small amounts of money. I have friends that do them, they do a ton of stuff to them and dont even have 6k or so into the entire bike once they've sold some takeoffs etc Perfect projects for this economy
Its cool, I like it, cant see myself doing one anytime soon (most likely ever) cause its not at the top of my list for things I want, but I do think some look good.
I think the one posted in the original post is good looking.

But yes, it is a fad

OH Come on. Where have Ya'll been. The original chopper and bobbers were done from the boys back from WW2. Plenty of cheap bikes and the Boys had a few bucks. We are always going to try and change things, alter things or just make things better in our minds. Just look at all the after market stuff on your bike or bikes. Is there an aftermarket industry out there? If it was not for them we would not be riding our bikes but waiting for parts (original parts that are not made any more). How many of us have a true STOCK BIKE. Many of us have fabricated or machined parts because we have had a better idea than BUELL. What if someone (EB) thought that a Sportster engine would always be just perfect. Sorry, I just like TOYS and playing with them. Any ideas are better than no ideas.

I actually do have a Buell that is stock minus luggage items offered through Buell.

Now my tuber......yeah, thats a COMPLETELY different story (including two weeks ago when we took a hacksaw to the frame [subframe area] so that we could weld in a 6"~ extension)

It's funny Buells are unique motorcycles by them selfs, you don't need to spend a lot of money to make them different. Just my two cents and excuse me I feel sick

Blue - not really. While rarer than most bikes, there is nothing unique about hundreds of bikes built identically
