not looking for who to send it to for repairs, wondering if anyone has repaired/rebuilt, or installed a race tech kit, basically taken it apart themselves, and what tips they found for dissassembly/reasembly? i have done a gold valve on a cbr900rr shock, so i am game to attempt this incontenent shock. | ||

I'm going to rebuild mine by taking it apart piece by piece and replacing all the internal and external components with Penske parts. When I'm done, I'll have shock that is massively better than the stock one, and will be much easier to rebuild the next time. I also have Abe Lincoln's axe. The handle and head have both been replaced several times.  | ||

Why spend all of this time on the Showa? Just buy the Works if you want to save money or get the Penske. I would rather ride than tinker with a sub-par shock. nate | ||

i am just interested in repairing the stock shock, which will suit my needs. i found a good post in the knowledge base also. looks pretty straight forward. thx for all the replies. | ||

I have rebuilt mine twice with new seals and did the Gold Valve kit the first time around. I don't have the money for a fancy new shock and don't mind spending an afternoon to save several hundred dollars. It feels just as good as Ohlins equipped bikes I've rode...though a lot of that is dependent on the set-up. A press, a vice, a good selection of picks, and perhaps a bent flat screwdriver are all the special tools that are needed. The Race Tech suspension fluid is ridiculously expensive, but has kept its properties a hell of a lot better than the H-D fork oil I used last time. My only worry is replacing the plastic collar that rides externally along the shock body. I only have one of those left, and will have to get creative when it wears through. It's not that different from your CBR shock, just a bit quirky and special in some ways. I don't spend a lot of time with bikes...just too much with mine  The next seal replacement should be coming any day now... | ||

thx for all the input. i found a non leaker short shock with a front mount. the plan is to swap shock's, so i dont loose any down time riding this cool machine, then rebuild the factory showa and reinstall. on another note i saw a monster of a buell s1 today, 90 inch, a lot of custom one off machine work, 190 rear tire, ducati 998 solo seat section, very cool buell. |
