I've never heard of one of those breaking before either. I would have thought the bold would go before that mount.

IMHO, no matter how strong the front motor mount, is if improperly installed it will still break, "BUT" it will take longer to do so ...

FRONT MOTOR MOUNT INSTALLATION Class 101, just PM me and a copy is yours ...

Genes3t, you should send them(NRHS) the pic, weird it broke following the radius like that. I would think they would want to see it. Wonder what grade Al they used.

I forwarded the thread to Dan at NRHS, I'm sure that they'll take care of it for you. That is a really unexpected failure. For it to follow that curve like that likely indicates a fatigue fracture that followed a stress riser from a surface line left from the milling process. That is the first failure of an NRHS mount that I've ever heard of. We've heard of only one or two bolts break with these mounts, and never the mount or the head.

Interested to see if you are able to diagnose what the cause was. That's a first.

If the bolts broke a year ago and now this SOMETHING is wrong with the other mounts or cylinder height.

Out of curiosity, what isolator is in there? Old style, new style? If it's old style, what rendition, Drag Specialties, HD/Buell?

Thylacine, all mounts look good and head is fine. I have had this bike since it had 8 miles on it,it broke 2 front mounts and 4 sets of bolts when it was under warranty!!.I put this mount on when the warranty ran out in 2004 if i remember right,i have replaced the bolts every 2 years for PM reasons. The bolts that broke a year ago was the first bolts to brake with the mount from NRHS.
Blackm2,I thank it is old style because i replaced it the same time i installed the mount, both mount and isolator came from AL
thanks Gene

While the motor mount is off, check to be SURE that the head faying surfaces are flat and in the same plane, not rockered or out of plane.

I'm curious was the bolt that broke last year the right side one? The reason I'm asking is if it is the other one maybe the asymmetrical loading on this side put an excessive stress on the mount where it cracked.

Since you have had this issue since day #1, perhaps the factory boned the machining on the head?
Perhaps the angle is off by 3 degrees or some odd thing?
Is there a way to test this hypothesis without taking the head off?

Sure sounds like something is out of kilter. Breaking those bolts is not normal. I know it happens, but it is rare. Breaking many times leads me to believe there is an underlying condition that needs to be addressed.

2002 Buell Thunderbolt S3T
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating 915 lbs./415 kg
Dry Weight 465 lbs./211 kg
Wet Weight 518 lbs./235 kg
Load Capacity 397 lbs./180 kg

My guess would be it is from being overloaded. Looking at your profile it looks like you carry a whole lot of stuff on there at times

Just something to think about

IMHO, it is how it is assembled ...

My 1997 S3T always carried too much weight early on, ie: large saddle bags, tank bag, and both my wife and "i" both weighting over 200 plus pounds ...

First motor mount broke after bouncing off a car ...

Second motor mount broke which was installed by DEALER after bouncing off car(IMHO installed wrong) ...

Third motor mount which is still in-service was install by myself, IMHO correctly which has a lot of miles on it as "i" have 110,423.8 miles as of the last ride ...

Have used only FACTORY MOTOR MOUNTS ...
