Well I had lots to do on the X1 this winter mostly cause if I can't ride, I need to tinker. But I did have a bad rear rocker box leak which started the whole deal. since I was doing that, I figured I would go with XB rockers and if they were off, might as well do the oil pump drive gear. Glad I did as mine looked pretty worn at 15K. When I took the stock rocker boxes off, the front was a new metal one and the rear was the stock paper. I have a record that the dealer did the work a few months after the guy bought it. They did just the front! Well they have cometic on there now.
Painted a lot of cast parts black also.
- changed engine oil to mobil one synthetic
- changed tranny fluid with stock
- changed fork oil with Race Tech ultra slick synthetic
- flushed front and rear brake fluid
- new Lyndall Gold front pads
- new intake seals
- new exhaust seals
- fabbed and installed mini rear hugger
- fabbed new dash
- crossroads bars
- new fuel filter
- smoothed and painted swingarm
- painted headlight trim ring black

Waiting until February to get new tires which is one of the last things I need to do. On the list is the American Sport Bike carbon underseat panel

Also trying to decide if I want to paint the tail section satin black or polish it. Any thoughts?

Nathan:

Awesome! I love it. If you do not mind if I ask, how did you drop the dash and fab the mini rear hugger? What happened to the tank accents?

The Crossroads bars allowed me to fab a dash like that. I had a similar one before with the stock bars but it did not look right with the Crossroads bars. Between where the Xroads mount on the tree, is a mount for the dash. I just mocked up a new dash with some cardboard and once I was happy with it, transferred it to aluminum and cut it out. I also raised the headlight mounts on the forks to push the headlight up against the dash.
The mini hugger was the stock fender that I cut down. I used the mount that was in there and then fabbed another mount on the swingarm.
The tank accents haven't gone on yet. Still have some things to put on but I want to test ride it this weekend before I button her up.

I would not be able to do it. I like the painted tail look on some bikes, but man, I just can not do it.

Nathan, what about the Xroads bars? I saw a pic where someone painted those black. I think I am going to do that with mine.

Sdecp I thought of painting (or anodizing) the XRoads bars black and still may. Want to ride with them first before I do much more to them.

Painting the tail section is always easy to undo. Sand and polish or buy another, they are not that expensive. I would do red but I have another set of plastics that will be satin black and then the tail wouldn't match.

Here are a few more pics of the hugger. And one of the headlight ring. I really did not like the chrome.

My suggestion on the subframe would be to go satin black, especially if you are going with satin black body work.... unless you are going to have other shiny bits that would tie into a polished tail, which I doubt since you didn't like the chrome headlight ring.

Looking at some of those pics again, it looks like you have a two tone black thing going on with the primary cover and derby cover... and it looks like the swingarm matches the black on the derby cover.... I would match the tail section with the black on the primary cover.... although this whole idea is all subject to weather or not im seeing an optical illusion : )

I was gonna say red, but reading your reasoning I'll have to vote black as well.

That will look cool with the white wheels if you've got white lettering on the tank cover. White race stripes on black would be pretty sweet too.

I like a satin finish or polished aluminum because I like materials to look like what they are wherever possible. (ie polished aluminum, varnished wood, etc.)

That said, satin black paint like the headlight ring would look good.

the derby cover isn't as shiny as it looks in the pics. i will probably go with the American Sport Bike carbon one soon for that though.

I don't know how you could even think about getting rid of that beautiful Red tank with white stripe for yet another Black bike. I vote paint the tail Red and leave the tank alone.

I love the look of the bars and the front end. Nice classic Cafe look.

not getting rid of it, just options. i get bored easily and need new looks once and a while to prevent me from buying more bikes : ) . I have XB headlights I am also going to play with for the black plastics.
I do love the red also.

Question about your instrument cluster, I saw the hardware on the handlebar base plate and thought you had braced it before i looked again at the cluster.

Does the hardware butt up against the upper triple clamp?

Reason I ask is my base plate flexes a bit and I though securing a spacer close to where your cluster hardware is located would lock it down.

Thoughts?

Maybe you could pick up another tail to powder coat black, and get the current one done red to match your Red Stripe paint.

Great job. You did a lot of work.
How difficult was the front fork oil job?

I did not like how much the Xroads base plate flexed so I took some .25" thick aluminum (the same I made the dash from) and cut out an exact copy of the base plate, holes and all. I did leave some tabs in which to mount the dash to. You can see the extra bolts on the Xroads base plate and that is where I clamped the two plates together in addition to the 4 stock triple tree bolts. It does stiffen up the Xroads plate quite a bit and gave a great place to mount the dash.

I cheated on the fork oil according to some. I have changed fork oil and rebuilt mountain bike forks for years so I did a similar thing.
I loosened the top nut before I removed it from the tree. After I removed the leg, I loosened the top cap all the way but it is still attached to the dampener. I bottomed the fork out and drained the oil into a clean container. When it was through dripping, I then cycled the fork up and down until all of the oil was out of the cartridge. When I was sure all of the oil I could get out was out, I transferred the old oil to a clear mason jar and marked the level on the jar. Dumped the oil (recycled) and cleaned the jar. Filled new oil up to the line and used a funnel to slowly fill. Cycled the fork up and down and put it back in.
Seemed to work OK and I didn't have to tear the fork down because I did not have any leaking seals.

just took it for a quick spin and wow those lyndall gold pads are great. much better feel and bite than the old pads that were in there. don't know if they were stock or not but they sucked. also fresh fluid and a bleed really firmed up the lever feel. next to the forcewinder, one of my favorite mods.

I vote red for the aluminum tail, powdercoat it to match the tank cover.

I like the black swingarm, I might do that too. I've been waiting for a convenient time to black out my headlight trim ring, there's only 3 pieces of chrome still on my bike, the trim ring, the handlebars, and the lifter tubes, and I have plans to 'fix' all three.

I have plans for the tail section now, should be sick.
I sandblasted the trim ring first and it adhered well. Flat black paint with a flat clear coat.
I considered the lifter tubes while I had the rocker boxes off but decided against it. They don't bug me much.

Gt, that looks smooth!! I like the bar/ dash mods. From the front it's got ol' school cafe racer flair to it.

I'm in the same dilemma about what to do with my X-1 tail once it's mounted on a different bike, color or paint.

Paint the tail red.

Each side starts with a 'fork'. Put a white stripe down the center of each fork side, have them meet on the main section and carry the dual stripe look around the tail, like down the center of the tank.

But that's just me.

Nice looking bike!

It's amazing how much of a difference painting that trim ring makes. I had done the same thing on the Mrs. old Monster and it just looked that much more sinister.
