There are several Sportsters with Buell front ends on them. They swap over pretty well, actually.

I still don't see what exactly the project is.

I think it's gonna be a Sporty 1250 cafe racer -- with the Vance and Hines exhaust -- rearsets and the inverted forks -- Careful puddlepirate -- the next pcture he posts will look an awful lot like your profile pic --

sarcasm noted...hehe...it is going to look very similar to what you have going on only with a tuber front end.

The pile of parts is a Vance & Hines SR2 - 2 into 1 exhaust, crossroads performance rear sets, 1998 S3 inverted forks, 1999 Buell cast front wheel. I have also installed Sportster Sport rear shocks. I am now at the point where I need to make a decision concerning front brakes.

The bike has the Sportster Sport front end with dual disks, however, the Buell front end uses a single rotor/six piston caliper setup. Crossroads builds a set of caliper mounts that would allow the Sportster calipers to be installed on the inverted forks...the Buell wheel is already predrilled and tapped to accept the additional rotor, so I have my choice...one big rotor w/six piston caliper? or two rotors with four piston calipers?

I'll post a couple pics with the rear sets, shocks and exhaust...they look pretty good IMHO.

I say do it up with twin discs!! Not something you see every day.

Do you already have your plan in mind? I'll be more than happy to provide any assistance you may need.

Brokeneck, I'm trying to stay 1 step ahead of the curve. I'm currently in the beginning phases of sticking the XB 180 rear to the Sportster using an aluminum GSXR swingarm. If that doesn't work I've got a spare XL swingarm I'll chop.

Anyway, not to hijack the thread. I'm looking forward to progress updates!!

Thanks for the encouragement there Pirate. I too was looking into putting a 180 series wheel and tire on the backend...you'll have to let us know how that goes...with lots of pics! That's going to be more difficult than the XB front end me thinks.

I've been leaning towards the dual disks as well and for the same reason...it would be something different.

By the way, I'm missing the front axle spacers for the front end that I got from ebay so if anyone has some, PM me and I'll buy 'em from you. They would be the stock wheel spacers from a 98 S3 front end.

Gotta go to work...arg! Pics will have to be tomorrow.

I'm thinkin' I should just quit my job and work on bikes all day! 'course then I wouldn't be able to afford any parts...

Here's some pics of the new additions:

SR2 Vance and Hines, Crossroads rear sets, Sportster Sport rear shocks.





I was missing the original mid control footpeg mount to complete my installation...parts on the way from the dealership...



Now that foot peg has got to go...Xroads pegs on the way as well...



Next step is the front end...I have to get the inside diameter of the existing rotors machined out to 2 and 1/2" to accomodate the Buell wheel rotor mount. Then I need to have the Buell top triple tree mount machined to 1" to accept the larger diameter Harley bars. I don't want to have to replace all the switch gear.

Carl, Justin at Two Bit Choppers can bore out the inside of your handlebar clamp for about $50 or so.

I did mine using a 7/8" drill bit, then a 15/16", then finally a 1". Worked quite well for me.

Party like it's 1999! Crossroads, Storz, and homemade goodies galore festooned my mighty 883 (rearsets not installed in this pic), To keep the ride height up, I used 1200S forks, rather than Buell forks. You're going to lose ground clearance, so be mindful of your lean angles.

Chris Burr put an S1 front end on his '06 and did an excellent job documenting the work.

Very nice Sporty there Matty. I am actually concerned about taking off the sport front end and going with the Buell and just for that reason...clearance. I'm going to go with the Metzler ME880 tires that have a taller sidewall to try and get some of that back. We'll see how it goes.

I was actually following that exact build over on the XLforum. That guy does some amazing work. I'll have to look into putting the Buell swingarm on but to tell the truth, that may be out of my range of expertise.

Surgery has begun in earnest...

Thanks for the heads up but I met some guys at the swap meet a couple weekends ago and we are bartering for some machine work and parts...ie. my spoked wheels for machine work and a solid/slotted sportster wheel for the back etc...I think those 2-bit guys are in Denver aren't they?

Two Bit is somewhere in Colorado. Justin is a pretty decent guy to deal with.

One thing I can't stress enough is watch your tank-to-upper-triple clearance. I dented mine when the forks swung to the right unexpectedly. It was on the bike lift at the time.

I used to know guys back in the 70's who put clearance dents in their gas tanks on purpose before the paint went on.

Mike, how noticeable are the dents after it is painted?

I've never heard of someone doing it on purpose, but that is a different concept.

Carl, I'm not a fan of the XL discs on the front. Any plan to get some custom ones done?

They'd use ballpeen hammers, heat, fender/bodywork tools, and make nicely sculpted indents into the tank. Sort of like some do these days with their nox bottles but not so extreme or noticeable. Sometimes it doesn't take much to get the needed clearance, sometimes it's more of a flattening than an indenting. Been many years though.

What? You were the one to talk me into that!

Actually I think they look pretty good...I'm thinking of putting some orange on 'em to tie them in with the solid wheel in the back...I was going to powder coat the entire rim but think that would be too much orange...I was 50-50 with the duals or the Buell rotor but for uniqueness I thought I would try these. After all, They're only bolt on...easily changed if they make me want to hurl.

Oops, I was voting for the dual discs, not the XL ones specifically.

I think the DUAL disks look great, I just don't like the XL rotors on there. Maybe if you do paint them it will make them look a little different?

Carl have you ordered the brake parts from Crossroads yet -- Take a closer look at the picture Matty posted -- me thinks the dual discs are going to hide too much of that great looking mag wheel. If you didn't use the rotors you could sell the sport front end as a complete unit -- might help pay some towards the heads or 1250 kit. I'll bet you could talk me into buying the wave for my S3 -- and donating the stock one to the project. Then all you'd need to find was a caliper--

Carl -- I'll volunteer to apply the clearance dents -- I don't think I'll need a hammer. I'll just put some duct tape on the triple trees to keep 'em from getting scratched when I use 'em to apply a little force to the tank.

Great project, Bogie.

Personally, since you're going with a solid rear wheel, I'd try one from a Vrod or Duece. The 16" just doesn't look big enough, plus the gound clearance issue.

weird putting the sporty brakes on the buell wheel, i went the other way and put the buell brakes on the sporty wheel.

I did my inverted buell front end swap last year if you need any pointers, and rather than machine out the buell top tree, I machined it flat so you can run traditional bolt on risers.
how are you planning on doing for stops?

Hey Mark, Thanks for the input and cool lookin' Sporty...I'm still leaning toward the Sporty brakes on the Buell wheel...I know...wierd, but like I said "if it makes me wanna hurl" when I'm done, it's just bolt on stuff...easliy changed.

My footpegs came in yesterday and the other parts are going ot the machine shop tommorrow...if I get the top triple tree mount machined out to 1" I can use any after market Harley bars I want and I can re-use the hooded headlight mount from the Sportster...with some modifications of course. I have a plan!!

Pirate, the XL brakes look HUGE on that wheel, and when you assemble the parts they all need to go together at once...as in the calipers won't fit over the rotors with the rotor mounted on the wheel...PITA...when I'm done I'll post some pics and we can all hurl together!
