Hello everybody! This is my first post here. I just purchased an 02 M2 and I was hoping you guy}s can tell me if their is anything I should know or look out for. (example)-oil pump gear, gaskets, ect... I have been a harley rider for many years now and before that it was crotch rockets (85 750 turbo Kawi,89 1100 GSXR Suz) Always wanted a buell but the bike was to small for me (6'3''250) back then. Now I'm a little lighter the bike is bigger and the price is right!!!

You made a fine choice. The 2002 M2 is arguably the best built of all the tube frames. You have all the updated/improved parts and should be all set. The two items you mentioned are all I can think of. I suggest needle/exhaust/air cleaner change.

Welcome! The 2002 M2 is a great motorcycle and there's not much that it needs. You didn't give us any details -- is it 100% stock?

It is my favorite Buell (road it to work this morning 130 mile round trip) and it's a keeper.

hugie- you have got the best of the best. congrats on the buy. you will never regret it. if you feel the need to do something stupid that would cause you to lay the bike down, go buy a second bike. you'll want to hang on to this one as long as possible.

Wise Choice . . .

The Buell M2 Cyclone is one of the best motorcycles ever made. . . . I can prove it.

Thanks guys! I feel pretty good about this bike. I bought it from my brother-in-law in Texas. He did some mods. like a V&H muff., power jet carb. kit and a S-2 fairing. I was surprised how well the fairing bolted up, it looks completely stock. He even installed a cig. lighter. (I don't smoke but I'll find something to stick in their.) I rode the bike at bike week a few years ago and the only problem I can remember was the VOES acting up. Sometimes when I would hit the throddle fast it would ping like crazy w/ no power but if you roll on smooth, no problem. He claims he fix it and then parked it for over a year! I'm going to texas today (driving from Jersey) to pick it up. I plan on changing all fluids, pulling the spark plugs hitting it with alittle oil and then crank it until oil pressure comes up and then.....FIRE THAT BI^CH UP!!! I'm hoping the carb is OK I don't want to dig into that if I don't have too. THANKS GUYs for the great comments. BILL

Your profile says you're in Jersey - I'd bet you can get a Ulysses heated suit plug for that cig lighter, so you can extend your riding season! I wear the heated jacket liner and heated gloves, and I'm on my S2 in 30 degree weather with no problems so far. My FLHP has had me out in 10 degrees, but it has a bigger windshield...we'll see how the S2 does later this season : )

Good score on the M2 - it was my first Buell, great bike.

Thanks Ratbuell, I didn't know about the Ulysses heated suit. I was thinking heated grips but I'm not sure how much the 02 M2 electrical system can handle? My 03 Roadking w/ fuel injection throws out plenty of amps. but I fried the stator on my 2000 softail on a hot day (that was a $500 hit)so I'm cautious with the electrics. Hey does anybody know what my M2 amp. output is?

can you hook up a heated suit to the m2 without worrying about it messing up the charging system.

jacket liner.......6.4 amps
pants liner........3.6
gloves.............2.2
sox................2.2
-----
14.4 amps

these are gerbing (they make the harley stuff) numbers.

i have the jacket liner and gloves. i want the pants liners and sox as well. i don't know how many amps the m2 takes to operate. i gotta ask at the dealer before i make the decision which to buy if i can't have both. the total amperage is only 22.

for the most part i would probably be worried about the torso and the hands. legs usually do pretty good and the joe rocket boots that i picked up kept my feet pretty warm with one pair of socks on and when i put the wool sock over those my feet were sweating.

our winter weather north of the mason-dixon line tends to be a bit more chilly than florida. although core temp is primary, feet and legs get cold as well.

Congrats on the Cyclone! Court is right, although I dont know why. My reasoning is pure bias... Call me an uninformed liar, but the grin on my face will say otherwise.

I smile everytime I see her sitting in the garage whether Im about to mount up for a ride or not...which usually results in a spin around the block anyway.

I love my 2002 M2. Click my name to see a pic!!! The Only thing I can suggest is to replace the metal washerbetween the grounding strap and the tube frame. If it starts to rust (as mine did) your charging system we drive you crazy! I replaced mine with a stainless part and have had no problems since then.

Back to your original question, based on my somewhat similar experience, be prepared to change out the intake seals and the rocker box lower gaskets as the first things to blow, er, suck, er, well, fail.
Both things are cheap parts, and very educational.

"dj, your up against me and the last two posts before you with the grey orange m2's. i don't think you could convince any of us which one is faster. nice try though."

I always wondered why Erik Buell preferred the orange framed tubers and why the company would even offer such an-over-the-top color on a frame. Then I stumbled upon a picture of Buell no.1, the RW750...

I bet he chose orange paint because he already had a bucket of it in his gagage.

What's story Anony-Erik?

Hey everybody I'm back from Texas! My brother-in-law couldn't get it to run, just spudder. So he let me have it for $2000 (SWEET!!!) I pulled into Jersey 4am and was up at 8am tearing into it. I found the choke cable sleeve pulled out of the carb., the rear cylinder spark plug wire was warn through by the knock sensor wire (I think thats what it is? wire coming from the top of the head) and the plugs were fowled. I fixed everything in an hour and fire her up and she runs great!!! The bike has just under 8K miles and was garaged. from my inspection NOTHING is leaking (thank god) I know my bro. had a leaky intake but I don't know if he replaced or just tightened it up? PICs will be coming soon as I learn how to post them. And I would like to know if this year 02 buell M2 needs the oil pump gear that I read so much about? Thanks for all your comments and advise!!! BILL

$2000? Bike runs fine?

I hate you.

That wire coming from the head is probably a temperature sensor that puts the ignition in a 'limp home' mode if the engine gets too hot. My 00 model doesn't have this feature (I believe it was a mid-year change in 2000).

I still hate you.

"And I would like to know if this year 02 buell M2 needs the oil pump gear that I read so much about?"

I don't believe there was any change in drive gear material on tubers, and even some XB's have had this lamentable issue.

The best thing to do is to inspect the gear every oil change (or two) by dropping the oil-pump (disconnect one line, remove 4 fasteners and it's out) and peering inside with a penlight. You should be able to spot any unusual wear visually.

I need to inspect mine right now.

The Oil pump drive gear wasn't updated until 2006.

I've never inspected my oil pump gear, and now you guys have me all worried.

And yes, you got a great deal on that thing! If you can't figure out how to post the pictures, just email them to me and I'll post 'em up. mfarrenkopf (at) paneltown (dot) com.
