Hey Matt, I may park my bike next to yours for the winter. If I'm lucky your OCD will take over and my bike will be shiny too!

Thanks guys.

Bring it over... I get bored sometimes....

I have really done it all for the maintnance side... This gave me a chance to inspect the parts going back on as well as give it a fresher look.

More to come after I get the Carbon Fiber on and the rest of it polished out.

I STILL have some on the front end to do but will ALL be done at the same time I put the swingarm back on.

Xldevil.

My reason for the polishing was due to the swingarm finish flaking off... It looked like CRAP....

Good thing is that it wont take TOO much work to keep it some what shiny....

As I have been able to come up with a good mixture of polish that is VERY easy to use and works VERY well.

Does it add horse power??? NO.... but I DO like my bike to look good... The finish was taking away from it... so i figured I would take care of it the easy way.

Plus... a polished swingarm just looks good on a buell ... to me.

It may not add horsepower but the aerodynamics should count for something.
I'd like to find an extra to do that to because I'd like to cut the inner fender tabs off.
Looks great by the way!

Mm128, I agree about the aesthetics of polished aluminun.

I had the cases polished on my 70 Triumph in 1972. They looked great - and they still do.

When you start doing things like polishing aluminum castings, you may get very attached to your bike. A good thing really.

Your parts look great.

Regards,

Dave

Dave,

Thanks. No worries here.. THIS X1 is going NO WHERE without me.

I agreed to the seller that it would NEVER be sold.

Long story short... I bought this from an estate. Nice lady and her son lost their father in a tragic accident.

I found the listing and drove 6 hours NOT knowing if she was going to sell it or not. I told her I had another X1 but was REALLY interested in this one due to the color, addons etc...

She told me how her husband died... and that it had been a little over 6 months... She wanted someone that would take care of the Buell and not destroy it.

All in all.. she was attached to the bike due to it being his and i COMPLETELY understood.

She did sell it to me for a GREAT price... and I inturn SWORE that i would NEVER sell it no matter how much was offered.

I WILL keep my word. So... I feel that my polishing and cleaning it back up is Two fold.

For me its getting the bike nice and shiny and a respect issue for her passed husband.

You can't tell me your hands aren't feeling it! Thought for awhile I might have damaged mine it took so long for the soreness to subside!

BuellFighter,

It DOES hurt. I actually have a cut on my thumb and I have smoothed ALL of my finger tips down to where they really do NOT make a good ink print now.

but... all in all.. I am VERY close to finishing.

I have the head covers and triple trees and minor front end parts left to do and that WILL be it.

Heya Mm
I just got my M2 in the basement(that corner at the bottom of the stairs was a bitch, lemme tell ya) and plan to do what you are doing along with alot of other stuff this winter. Can you tell me how many hours it took for the swing arm? And any tips/procedures would be great.
By the way, your stuff looks awesome.

Igneroid,

Here is how i did the swingarm and block.

I started at:

100 grit on a Drill with the flat disk attachment.

I then went to 220 on the disk.

I could NOT find any round disk attachments that would go on the drill that were finer than the 220.

So... at 320, 400, 800, 1000, 2000 - I did it ALL by hand. (NUMBERS RESPECTIVELY)

Once I got a rough DRY sand to 2000 I started OVER at 800 and did it ALL WET back to 2000.

After that I went with MOTHERS aluminum polish... the stuff they reccommend for the POWER BALL. ITS THE BEST!!! hands down.. I tried over 8 different polishes during this and the TAIL SECTION. DONT waste your money on ANY other polish.

TIME invested.... WELL OVER 40 hours.

That being said... I got carried away.. I did the INSIDE of the swingarm where the wheel goes in.... THAT MIGHT NOT have been the BEST idea... as I was NOT thinking when i did it.... It WILL be challenging (NOT impossible) to keep it cleaned up...

I am anal anyways... I will take a wheel off every couple of weeks and redo it if i have to : )

TOTAL COST... Providing you have a DRILL or SANDER... look to spending about $50.00 that SHOULD include the almost $9.00 bottle of mothers.

Mothers Polish... should last you a VERY long time.. it ONLY takes a very small amount.

Get some GOOD gloves that you can still have good flexibility with.

TRUST ME ON THE GLOVES !!! or your fingers will HURT and be CUT up.

**If you have ANY questions, do NOT hesitate to contact me. I will talk, email or whatever...

It was kinda scary starting on it, cause you DONT think its going to come out.. but it will. It just takes ALOT of time and patience.

I started the ROCKER BOX COVERS and MIDDLE spacer today...

They SUCK and seem to be harder than the swingarm....

I SHOULD have them done by the END of the week.

I will post a before and after pic TOMORROW.

I recently polished my covers, spacers and bases while I had them off to replace the gear box cover gasket (and oil pump gear while I was at it) and found them pretty easy to sand/polish by hand.
I took about 3 hours per cylinder while watching tv......
Though I'll admit that chrome would be even nicer - the price was right!

I've also got two complete sets of rocker boxes/covers sitting on the shelf ...

Put XB covers on the S1 and a semi-polished set on the M2 which I polished the rest of the way ...
