the last two pic's rick a posted are both nice, but the red,white and blue bike is a street tracker in line with the old xr 750 flat track bikes. upright bars, flat track seat and mono shock rear. while cool is not a cafe at all. Ecosse makes about as close as i've seen to a cafe american on a regular basis, but at 50,000 plus who can afford onehttp://www.ecossemoto.com/index.htm | ||

Both those pics are from a Japanese site, Misumi Engineering. They're a Harley shop specializing in cafe racers and they have a race team. | ||

I guess the question becomes-WHY HASN`T ANY AMERICAN BUILT A DECENT BUELL CAFE RACER?If so many of us seem to like them so much why has everyone essentially given up?It is not impossible and requires a little thinking outside of the "Chopper/Streetfighter" box.I guess we are just stuck in that box.A very strange phenomenon-if you can`t slam it together in a matter of days on TV,forget about it. | ||

I've got links to a few Japanese shops. They're tough to navigate but those dudes are serious fanatics.  That's a dual throttle body, 8 valve, 1360cc XB engine in a flat track style frame...built for road racing. | ||

Rich -- I hope they treated you right when you traded in that bike -- that is going to be one of the most collectable Harleys of all time -- very cool -- I guess I always thought of all Buells as Cafe racers when you compare them to stock Sporttys. I still have my old Norton Dunstall -- I've always wanted to Cafe it but it's so original it would be a crime. | ||

I had a Norton Dunstall with Lake injectors 30 years ago-it kicked ass for its` time;drove Halfmoon bay to Santa Cruz in 29 minutes once-52 miles on a Sunday morning.Jack rabbit almost ended my Buell future that day. | ||

Well, THAT don't suck. Cafe enough for you? Looks a bit like a Dunstall NorVin. I think the classic XLCR look is perfectly as good as anything ever produced by a factory. Almost no "cafe" look came from a modern factory, BMW R90S and the XLCR are icons for this reason I think. | ||

is the above pic a cafe enough buell? wire wheels,dunstall/rickman fairing. try doing this yourself and plan on spending several thousand above the cost of the bike.this pic was posted here several months ago and i loved it. don't even remember who posted or who owns it. but they did say the wheels alone were costly | ||

OK,Tom_b,that is a decent effort,seen it before-is this the only one though?Now if this owner just put some Norton type mufflers on it and relocated the shock,XB style,larger diameter wheels(different forks,and slightly longer swingarm and a non-fabric,cafe tail section-hide battery in tail section,V-shaped oil tank under the engine-belly pan style,drop the suspension and seat pan down as low as possible and keep Buell frame geometry insofar as possible,lower,longer gas tank with knee and clipon (if needed)indents- I`d have to say that somebitch is one hell of an American Cafe Racer.Wouldn`t that be really cool looking though or should I book passage to Amsterdam? | ||

OK,this was the epiphany for me of cafe racer,Buell or not,cafe racer or not-rent "Lawrence of Arabia",that opening scene,the rumble of the J.A.P. V-twin and all that nickel-plated,mechanical art.That was and still is "IT",as far as I`m concerned.You just can`t beat that.I know there have been sad attempts at recreating the spirit of "it",with a Harley engine-gag.Its` all just lipstick on a pig,ya know? | ||

That is definitely pre cafe, Brough Superior. The "cafe" look came in the late 50's to early 60's. That Velocette is really nice. Would a BLAST engine go in there? How much was this bike, $60,000 ? (Message edited by jayvee on September 19, 2007) | ||

Just got back from vacation so I'm jumping in here a little late. Here is my pre XLCR '70 Sportster based cafe racer built by me in 1974, 86 cu. in., oil in frame ala early Triumphs, deraked fork to about 26 degrees, real magnesium wheels, and three disc brakes from a then starting out Performance Machine. Fun to ride but not much in the handling dept. Why I love Buells now. Sorry about the old Poloroid picture.  | ||
