1. Sodium batteries are on the horizon for stationary storage. Tesla are also eliminating cobalt from their batteries.

2. Tesla recycles their batteries. No reason we can’t recycle all lithium batteries.

3. Agreed : )

1. Cobalt, in batteries, and rare earth elements are used in light modern electric motors. And heavy Big Generators on towers with propellers.

Good to hear Tesla is getting cleaner.

We'll see if Sodium batteries are as clean to run as the over century old Edison cells.

2. Tesla smart. Government Stupid. Tesla is a tiny...near zero, contributor to lithium batteries in land fills. NOT PICKING ON the future Emperor of Mars. I kinda like that African American.

3. You must be a BUZZWORD FOR EVIL person to agree! ; )

btw the Toyota I put a deposit down on uses a Nickel metal hydride battery, and a lead acid. Both are dirty business. Lead especially, it never radioactively decays away.

Remember the Top Gear episodes on the Prius?

The original rather negative one...

The Race version!

Of course, pushing any car as hard as it will go will hurt your fuel economy. ( and on the original Prius narrow, hard, mileage tires, that's not that fast, but still flogging the daylights out of it ) And drafting doesn't hurt!

We're now 4 generations? later, and batteries have improved, and Elon is making cool cars. So the above is obsolete, but not wrong.

Ok, even though the first gen Prius was slow, the host is a jerk. But we all knew that, it's his thing.

I loved my VW Sportwagen TDI.

Torque, economy, handling. All great.

But to be honest, much like Firefly, it was gone before I learned to hate it. So the lingering taste is still good.

Except for the Soy based wiring for biodegradable recycling reasons that mice find irresistible. But I supposed that was tasty too.

Build power plants, preferably safe, clean, Carbon Free ( and gluten free! Also Keto, since no carbs! But not, hopefully, free range ) Thorium reactors, to charge all the electric cars and commuter vtolz & desa!inate the water needed to keep the voters alive.

Cali is as artificial an environment as a spaceship. Without complex and carefully maintained technology only a fraction of it's population would survive. Power, water, food, and transportation.

That's true to various degrees in every city on Earth. If the Green Communist Mayor of London or Newark shut down all roads into town to clean up the Environment, the starving hordes would need to flee from the Death Zone. Of course the Elite would eat as they liked, with serfs to fetch them their champagne and caviar.

Desalinization might be about to get a whole lot cheaper. They’re doing some pretty neat stuff with graphene these days. The water goes through, the water bound to sodium ions does not.

Graphene has some nifty maybes like solar cells and lung disease. ( China made masks shedding graphene? There may be a real need for artificial lungs in a decade )

It's been years since the hype started and some will be justified but like "nano" some won't and some will take decades. And there will be environmental issues.

Still, cool beans if cheap desalination can ease the strain where it can. California water systems stopped mid-build years ago when the big coastal cities got what they wanted and suddenly didn't want to pay to finish all the reservoirs and aqueducts. Short sighted and now the environmental activists are bizzaro conservative wanting no change.

So dams that turned out to be bad ideas cannot be removed ( great NPR Documentary on that ) and where needing to be expanded by modification or new development taboo!

Clean air and water today take a back seat to social justice & Climate con men profits.

https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/california-begs- more-electricity-shift-renewable-power-leaves-stat e-reeling

It's incompetent or deliberate, and the Government of California is going to kill people.

For decades critics have repeatedly complained that the California Fire Season is made worse by Bad Policy on forest management.

Nothing short of an Ice Age and megatons of snow and rain will prevent the Fire Season. ( and that will cause massive landslides and millions of the Exploited Homeless will die of exposure)

Last year they proved their Electricity Policy was a failure and people Died.

More will die this year. Summer isn't a one off surprise. These won't be unintended accidental deaths this time, but premeditated murder.

But at least Pot is legal. But those grow light power draws may be the straw that breaks the back of the Jackass.

So what will the power situation be in 2035 when CA has pledged to have phased out all but electric vehicles?
Most will be trying to charge at night when the solar grid is idle and winds have calmed.

Personally, for now, I'll ignore the issues of slaves and children in mines and the horrific pollution involved making batteries and rare earth magnets for wind generation and electric motors.

At least some of those problems are political, and only counter revolutions in multiple countries can solve that.

And since with the notable exception of Tesla ( and any others I'm ignorant about ) with their own battery recycling program, the problem of dumping toxic and flammable batteries in illegal storage is just going to get worse.

I suggest piling them around the Capitol, as a reminder of consequence of choice.

Intelligent Speed Assistant.

I use cruise control a lot both to save gas on the highway and avoid tickets. Some folk are uncomfortable with the idea of engaging cruise in a village with a 35 mph limit, fearing that it will increase inattention by decoupling part of the job. I think that's probably true for Them, but I see it as a way to devote more of my attention to collision avoidance and watching for children in motion.

The difference is Choice.

Some people really hate when You have Choices.

Btw, this isn't a Slippery Slope. It's an Ice Cliff.

Today, if you can push a button and turn off Big Nanny, I'm fine with it. Adaptive Cruise and Brake Assist and blind spot warning are all useful toys/tools for safety.

And full goose bozo libertarian as I am, Programmed Speed Limits are an obvious way to save lives. Don't let the Idiots drive 90 mph in a school zone? AWESome!

And honestly, if your car refuses to exceed 69 in a 65 zone, how does that hurt you? A few minutes vs. DEAD CHILDREN? How selfish are you?

Unfortunately for any potential glee I also remember the Nixon and Carter administrations.

Carter, who imposed gas rationing when the Arab States punished the U.S. for not abandoning Israel to be annihilated.

Nixon, again under oil crisis from Arab States, proposed a Temporary 45 mph speed limit until the crisis passed, was overruled by a Congress that hated him, with a 55 mph limit that WASN'T Temporary and hung on for decades, with Congress using it and road funding as a weapon to force States to comply with whims on drinking age and seat belt laws.

You can smoke pot and have sex with your Congresscritters before you can drink in most of America today.

I'll point out the Harris/Biden* regime WANTS And has imposed a growing Energy Crisis. No gasoline for you! Is coming.

And then there's the Software Update issue.

My PC ( not politically correct) computer will change entire software suites on the Whims from Redmond.

Tesla owners look forward to waking up to their security camera footage of their car celebration of updates, and find a few more miles of range or features in the morning.

Few hear about the new, improved, police intervention apps.

I look forward to the Spin CNN is going to put on the Update that takes over your car, pulling over, parking, and locking you in, as the Mayor is chauffeured past to his private gym.

And when the President* has Jen tell us there's a gas crisis and the New Normal National Socialist Worker's Party Speed Limit is now an Expert Recommended 46 mph, your car will Obey.

You may think that's paranoid fantasy. I hope you're right.

You might think that just leaving the modern car in the driveway and taking the antique or your motorcycle will be your solution.

That assumes that uncontrolled driving will still be legal.

You might say "they can't mandate robot cars! That's punishing the Poor!". I'll point out you'll just be taxed to buy all the Poor New cars made by whoever bribed the Congresscritters and Prez. ( today, the CCP )

Of course I could just be overly cynical. It's not like there's anyone that doesn't completely trust the Government in 2021!

I ad read something (I think) a couple years ago citing examples of predicted sea rise conditions that never occurred.

Like “Downtown NYC would be 14” under water by 2010” ( example, not a quote)

But, now I find nothing and I’m being told by a coworker that sea rise is an imminent threat

Anyone recall seeing something suggesting that some of the predictions were wrong.?

Anyone recall seeing something suggesting that some of the predictions were wrong.?

that's an annual Earth Day tradition, citing the Dooms we keep missing out on.

Here's some spin to the tune of "nothing happened but it will any second now, really, don't pay any attention to the 50 years we were wrong!"

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/why- didnt-first-earth-days-predictions-come-true-its-c omplicated-180958820/

And one of a million "You were wrong for 50 years, why would anyone except an idiot listen to you now?"

https://www.aei.org/carpe-diem/18-spectacularly-wr ong-predictions-made-around-the-time-of-first-eart h-day-in-1970-expect-more-this-year-3/

I went for the balanced approach here, because IMHO the "man can't hurt the planet, that's silly" folk are just as wrong, if for different reasons, as the "Man will kill all life in weeks! and we'll all choke to death on our waste products" folk.

The TRUTH is somewhere in between, and no amount of arguing changes the actual facts.

Population Bomb.

The only reason we don't have mass periodic famines with death tools in the millions is North American Farmers and the scientists who developed the strains, chemicals, and plastics to store, the food the planet depends on.

And the massive fossil fuel infrastructure, shipping by land sea and air fleets, and billions in taxes on the most productive.

Just shutting off the U.S. & Canada from the world would kill at least a quarter of the planet.

So the problem is real. The proposed solutions are inevitably horrific.

Eugenics, forced population control, mass murder to maintain the status quo, and all decided by unelected monsters.

And it's going to be unelected monsters, or fake elected ones, like Xi and the new Head Puppet in Iran, and Redacted, because no decent human would make those choices.

Blake, the American E!itists policy of zero progress for the Servant Classes in Servant Countries is a way to ensure a steady supply of yard workers, maids, and nannies that will accept illegally low wages and be subject to blackmail for lack of papers and criminal trespass. Much easier to silence abused young victims if you can threaten them with arrest & deportation.

And if they were allowed safe, clean energy and civil rights, that cuts way back on the available labor pool of teenage girls and boys the Elite Rich can use as sex slaves.

Imported and Domestic abused girls and boys.

What better way to cover your moral depths than pious sermons on Saving The Children and Saving The Planet? Preferably at luxury hotels delivered to by jets and yachts and armored SUVs.

Re: Drug testing for sportsball.

I used to be into bicycle racing, as a spectator, since, like being a Jockey, I'm too big to be competitive.

That was a long time ago, and blood doping, taking your own blood, separating the oxygen carrying red blood cells, and sticking them back in your body, was developed as a cheat that was at the time, undetectable. It also was potentially deadly, since while it gave a real boost to endurance in aerobic sports, when you got dehydrated during a race, the thicker blood overworked the heart like pumping mud. Several racers died of heart attacks and strokes.

And once upon a time I was involved in the (then) United States Hang Gliding Association meeting on drug testing for competition.

After hours of arguing, I had my say, and pointed out that almost all the muscle building boosts were worse than useless in a sport that rewards lean, skinny, light people. And that every recreational drug, from booze to pot to LSD was going to adversely affect performance in a sport that depends on judgement of rapidly changing environment factors. Further, that the cost of testing for drugs that were useless to win competitions, the legal costs to deal with suits for disputed test results, and the negatives of dangerous drugs to beat the testing and bad attitudes institutionalized cheating caused, meant there was no real upside to even pretending to deal with a nonexistent problem.

To my pleased surprise, the vote was to table the issue until everyone forgot about it. I'm going to assume that the folk in the room, chosen by Darwnian selection, were smarter than average. But make no claims about sanity.

I also recall the Olympics ordering the testing of the Gold medal Snowboarding champion. Because he was a snowboarder. ( and thus, to old ski bums, young, long haired, and of a lesser Class )

You can argue for steroid etc. testing, with the rationalization that it's unfair that less rich people can't afford performance drugs and you don't like young athletes getting a bad example & wrecking their health.

But I'm utterly perplexed when men who aren't very successful as athletes, choose to play against girls. I don't care who you prefer as a sexual or life partner.

There are no girls choosing to compete against men by pretending to be one. There are a few who want to test themselves against the Best and asking/demanding to compete, as themselves. More power to them.

And I'm all for more tolerance to other's mental oddities than I actually am. I fall short of my own ideals.

I can understand that being messed up is painful and getting teased or attacked about being different is wrong.

But... Declaring crazy normal might ease some minds, it doesn't really improve the reactions of the population overall if crazy is a forbidden subject, and any sane person can see it's not right for a Man to beat up women because he can't compete with men.

This pendulum is going way too far...
