TWO MONTHS FROM TODAY, on Thursday morning, June 10th, the Sun will come up over the Tri-State area looking like a crescent Moon. It will be near the peak of a partial eclipse of the Sun in which 73% of the Sun's disk will be obscured by the passing New Moon. Sunrise coinciding with the peak of a solar eclipse of large magnitude is a rather rare occurrence; for NYC is has happened only twice in the last 150 years: in Sept. 1875 and October 1959. Make sure your alarm clock is properly set so you won't miss it . . . Sunrise that morning is as early as it can get (5:24 a.m.). Of course, precautions must be taken in observing the partially eclipsed but still blindingly bright Sun. August 2017, I drove to the middle of Wyoming with a friend to see a total solar eclipse. The only total I have ever seen, it was awesome. I had filter glasses and fitted the objective lens of a pair of 7X50 binoculars with filters. The whole thing was done way too fast. Z | ||

Me...questionable. Doris should be here minding the store...see below. My step-dad just died. 88 years old. Lived in Spokane. He was a farmer (not really but loved tinkering), so there is a lot of cleanup needed at the old homestead. And, since I'm retired now, I got volunteered! Riding out for that. Maybe over to Zack's for a couple of beers on the way back. I've got a nephew that put in 22 and 6 in the USMC. Rank of Master Sergeant E8 at retirement. He is the highest ranking NCO in our family's history. Big deal to me, so my beautiful bride and I will join him to celebrate this major achievement in his career. At this time, not sure exactly what month this is happening. | ||
