The main reason that they tell you to leave it is that in most cases of the general public "rescuing" a bird, they make things worse.
Birds have a system that protects them from sudden impacts. In a lot of cases it just takes a short rest and off they go. I've gone through most of the bird rescue training here in California after having to rescue a few red tail hawks, coopers hawks and ravens. Many of them didn't need to be rescued and were fine after a couple of hours. I had a red tail slam into one of my windows and drop to the ground, seemingly dead on my deck. Surprisingly before the bird rescue folks showed up, it jumped up in the cardboard box I put it in and was eager to get out. I let it out and it flew away apparently with no injuries.
There are also laws in many states making it a crime to actually house a bird of prey even if you rescued it.
Of course there are instances where helping a bird is the right thing to do even if your state makes it a crime. That's why I am going through the training. Makes me legal when it happens again. Plus I have several aviaries I can use to house an injured bird. I only have my Blue and Gold Macaw, Oscar and he only needs one place outside.
Here it's OK to rescue but not keep without a rescue license. My little guy was in the middle of two lanes of a 4-lane highway. His death was imminent.
I suspect the game warden released it as neither raptor rescue(we have two within 40 miles) has seen it.
Good on ya, Zac. We have a red tail family living just down from us, it's a blessing to look up and see such magnificent birds. Over the years I've seen at least two "kettles" directly over my house, dozens and dozens flying with the thermals. SO cool.
I used to keep two tame female cockatiels, dang but I miss them. I'd love to keep another parrot or two, but with my two canines, they'd be snacks in no time. Oh well, that's why we keep several bird feeders going.
I went to pick up the dogs from the groomers today. There was a mini van 5 feet off my rear bumper for a mile. I pulled off the side of the road and let it past. The woman that didn't need another dough nut ran into The Doughnut Shop. I said something while picking up the dogs next door and they told me stories of the crashes caused in the parking lot by those patrons. I'm thinking only cops can handle dough nuts now.
Does the gutter stuff work well? Does it hold up to winters? It sure looks easy to install. I did the old wire gutter guards last fall. I've had good luck with them, but they will cut your hands up installing them unless you work with gloves. Foam would be way easier and faster.
... watching Slaughter and his lady noodling around on their Ural rig a couple of weekends ago got me thinking. If I had the scratch, it's be a hoot to have one of these built. Check out the link, dude seems to have it going on, I even like the way he wrote the ad. One of the pics is a rig built with a Triumph Rocket III- now, THAT would be the way to go! One is built with a nice looking Shovelhead.
