His heaven was already here on earth... I don't know how the real heaven could improve on how he lived. |

http://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2017/09/28/ why-conservatives-should-celebrate-hugh-hefner/ Pwnzor, better we not sh$# on a dead man. Hugh was far from perfect but he can't talk back to our views. National Geographic beat Playboy to showing me topless women. I admit that the Playmates generally had nicer breasts. Many lucky young women used Playboy to get a start in business, show and others. Playboy interviews are historical in their effect and quality. Jimmy Carter became President largely because of a Playboy cover interview. The cartoons were the best. Period. Gahan Wilson alone was enough to make Playboy a source of humor more adult and less sniggering than Mad or National Lampoon. The editorial content angered or pleased but was usually thoughtful. Unlike Rolling Stone. The fiction by the greatest authors of the day, from Gore Vidal to Arthur C. Clarke was top notch.. Honestly. I read Playboy methodically. First, of course, I HAD to turn the magazine sideways to admire the beauty of the centerfold model. Arguably one of the lovely women on Earth, only a dozen a year earned that position. Then the interview. Everyone from presidential candidates to bestselling authors to ........ Then, the cartoons. A quick flip through the usual ad dungeon of magazines showed me the best cartoon humour hidden among ads for cool stuff. Drano ads? No! Sharper Image and cigars and exercise toys. I might not be able to afford the hovercraft golf cart, but I wanted one. Then the articles and pictorials at my leisure with proper attention to detail and reverence for the subject matter. Others may have approached a Playboy differently, and it's status as cultural icon or parody changed over time, but it was a uniquely American institution. The feminist revolt against Hugh, ( one of the founders of the Movement was a Bunny who might not have had a voice without that connection ) angry at the objectification of women often missed that Playboy models were celebrated as individuals. Had names and personas. What American of the 20th century didn't know Barbi Benton? Playmates were famous, not anonymous. There's a wave of editorials coming praising, hating and re-writing. .. re-interpretation of the sexual revolution and Playboy's part in it. It certainly was a public part of the ever changing world we live in. |

im pretty sure he wouldn't have responded to our criticisms or praises .... but I'm happy to hear any view opposing or proposing is virtues ... it would be counter productive to my growth |

When I was a little boy, I remember seeing Playboy magazines available to read in my first barbershop. My dad had a few boxes of vintage ones stowed away in our attic. RIP. |

What's interesting to me here is the rush to his defense, when in fact I never stated my opinion. Again, leaving it alone. |

Defense? No. Plenty not to like about the Playboy world. Plenty of editorials out now cursing the dead guy. Some of them might not be full of crap. No need to curse him here too. Let me know when Larry Flynt passes. |

Feminists are an odd bunch. What, even, is the platform these days? Out to "free the nipple," but against the "objectification" of women. Against the "objectification" of women, but working towards giving sex workers legitimacy. Against "the patriarchy," yet condone and excuse the most patriarchal socio-political system currently in existence. Anyway, I always found the publication itself classy and well done. My interest started waning after artificial breasts become the norm. As for the man behind it, opinions vary. |

Objectification of women and glorification of carnal pleasure, fornication, and adultery has probably not been good for society. It wasn't good for me. Hefner and his products seemed to embody that culture. Beyond that, I'm largely ignorant of the man. "His heaven was already here on earth." Jamie, what you have said may well be true, and if so, tragic beyond words. Pray it isn't true. I'm fortunate. I've had a very small limited taste of what true heaven has to offer: Not a care or worry, completely secure and fulfilled, in fellowship with, loved, and cherished by all around me, pure joy. It was my 5th birthday I think. |

Agree that it would be sad if his life on Earth was his peak. The notion of paradise on Earth is a promise made by thieves. I admit the sexual revolution was a mixed bag. Adultery and the destruction of the nuclear family. Sexually transmitted diseases spread through promiscuity. Political enemies of western civilization using the welfare state to discourage marriage by punishing the responsible and rewarding serial random children from sperm spreaders in temporary relationships. On the positive side the "objectification" of women actually reversed course. Never mind the feminazis to whom meeting the eyes in conversation is sexual assault. Sure, Playboy showed us breasts, and after decades of airbrushed Barbie dolls finally actually showed, gasp! Body hair almost every person on the planet has. But not much or realistic. Playboy did open the doors for Penthouse and Hustler to be on the shelves but it didn't invent porn or even high class porn. I note with amusement that French Postcards of WW1 are now prized as historical documents as the lovely women posed with rifles to promote patriotism. Scholars now will point out the use of obsolete arms withdrawn from service and the reduction in petticoat layers under wartime shortages. I'm not joking. The failure of Playboy, like the failure of the hippie movement is one of accepting the freedoms while ignoring the responsibilities. Arguing the quality journalism and fiction, the editorial quality helped promote some undesirable causes has truth to it, but no more than Vanity Fair or Teen Beat. Vanity Fair and the love for brutal, but oh so fashionable dictators hit a hilarious peak when they published a doting piece on the lovely wife of Syrian strongman Assad, gorgeously portrayed in the lavish palaces his family had built from generations of theft. Praising her beauty, cosmopolitan style, and her husband's wise rule. About a week before Barack unilaterally decided the wise ruler was Satan and illegally provided arms to AQ to overthrow him to turn Syria over to his favored Brotherhood. And I offer no defense for Teen Beat promoting talentless boy bands. On a scale of sexist female destruction teen magazines beat Playboy hands down . |

Good friends have a daughter that got into the pageant system. Her mother was reluctant after they started just for fun years ago, not wanting to be a crazy stage mom living vicariously through her daughter.... but her daughter found it fun, and liked meeting people and enjoyed the competition. She's now going to college on multiple scholarships ( and showing respectful independence ) and has a few more contest years left before she enters adult life, with a career, national connections, a top notch education, and a solid sense of self, not blinded by faddish feminist idiocy. She's been attacked by the bitterly disappointed feminists just for playing the hated pageant game. And just to rub it in this straight A student is also a cheerleader. ( & I think a black belt in taekwondo ) |

Back in the 80's I worked with someone who's twin sister was a Playboy centerfold. Never met the centerfold twin, but her sister had the sexual attitudes that you might hope for from a centerfold. Being invited to lunch with her usually meant you were going to be hungry that afternoon. |
