Softtails and Dynas combined into softtails. New mono shock frame that is 30-something percent stiffer, cheaper to build and lighter. All big twins now use the new 8-valve engines. The V-Rod is gone. No Sportster changes to speak of. No changes of note to the newish 500/750 watercooled bikes.

They're actually bragging about things like improved handling, increased lean angle, and lighter weight, which is fairly amazing.

Nothing that excited me, but I do kind of like the new Fat Boy:

Solid wheels don't make a lick of difference. Ride a solid wheel bike back to back with a spoke wheel bike in the same conditions. I have. No difference.

The fatboy looks like a vrod with a big twin engine. Not my cup of tea but not hateful.

Dyna people are fuming it appears. They should have given the new bike a new name and not stolen Fat Bob from the dynas.

Now dealers can bend over any desperate Dyna people for "one the last Dynas ever".

EBR has a 48% lean angle.

You ought to try that for multiple hours on end with solid wheels! Do you know how difficult it is to light a smoke when you are going straight down the highway, in Kansas, with a lean angle of 20+ degrees

I was shock at how light the old "fatboy" wheels were when I picked one up at a dealership.

They only look fat. They are actually pretty much hollow like a Rokon.

I'd love to hear the theory of how a couple square feet of wheel side surface can multiply the effect of crosswinds, compared to the more-than-ten-times the area of the side of the motorcycle itself. I've had more crosswind effect from a WINDSHIELD because of buffeting transmitted to the steering head.

Tell a democrat. Have them start protesting solid wheels and stage some demonstrations. It would be about as worthwhile as tearing down all these statues...but it might make someone *feel* better...

I have a bicycle I ride every now and then.
1985 almost state of the art - Dura-Ace, not Campi.




The wheels have "bladed spokes" and in a stiff crosswind have moved me a foot sideways.
They also "sing" at speed.

Notice radial lacing on the front and single-cross on the rear...

I put 22,000 miles on a 1989 Heritage Softail Classic. Beautiful bike! Candy Bronze and Cream two tone. Loved it! Well, until I rode it a while!! No lean angle, I was constantly dragging things. It vibrated so bad it cracked the belt guard and my floor board flew off at speed! Two years later I sold it and bought an Electra Glide Sport. Wow, what a difference! I put 156,000 miles on that one!
I had to totally restore it at 100,000 miles by building a new engine. The only thing left stock were the cylinders and the carb!

Harley made a lot more improvements after that and the 2002 was solid. After that they started to cheapen the bottom end and they have not impressed me since.
