You've got the kessel up to 12 parsecs!! Wow! That must be really touching the limits of your DPF. Did you re-parameter the undershift or overspeed the variable geometry?
BadWeBrs Rock! We're already over halfway there in sustaining donations. I was just on PayPal and added it up, but promptly forgot the exact total. It was around $110 to $120 per month. Combined with the roughly $250 of lump sum donations, we're covered for three months.
How big of a database are we talking about? 1GB? 100GB?
What sort of bandwidth does the site require each month? Can't be much, given the minimal-graphics format.
I have 100Mbit and 75Mbit synchronous fiber connections (with never-go-down SLAs attached to them) to my office, plus in-house IT (we are an IT MSP shop), and what ought to be more-than-sufficient spare processing power and disk space. We aren't going to ever put a dent in AWS or Rackspace, but we do have our niche. That said, it looks like recurring donations are coming along nicely, so I assume you (Blake) would probably prefer keep things where they are now. But if you change your mind, the offer stands.
Have it be suggested (but not recommended) that if you sell an item in the classified section, that you make a donation to the site? It works great for some other advertiser free forum boards that I frequent. I personally will pitch in a few bucks because I know the parts are going to be sold without too much hassle or negotiation.
I just remember that our database requirements exceed the limits of the bargain packages offered by places like godaddy and rack space. More on the order of a couple GB, not 100 GB.
Dennis (LakeBueller), That's a nice idea. Thanks. It'd be really nice if that could be a grass-roots initiative, so to speak. You feeling well-rooted lately?
Vern, PM headed your way. Thank you. I'm not a PayPal fan myself. If there was a viable alternative, I'd use it.
Zac! You are welcome anytime! Anything much more and an alternate site would be required. The little 1960's vintage 2-1-0 that we call home is nice, but shindig-challenged.
Besides, the Colorado Rockies are so much more interesting from a Buell/EBR riding perspective than East Texas.
While Paypal is king for sending money online, there are other services. Google Wallet and Square Cash are two that I've used to send money to others that don't involve fees. I don't know if accepting donations is allowed in their TOS, I'll look into it.
I have a special checking account and credit card that are associated with my PayPal account. They are used for nothing else. The checking account always has a few dollars in it, and the associated credit card (backup funding source) has a low limit.
It costs me nothing to do this, only a few hours of my time about 10 years ago to set it all up. It's multi-layered protection that can't really be compromised, and the maximum I'm ever liable for is $50.
I actually did the Paypal thing . . .it adds a step, in which you are texted a PIN and have to enter it for each transaction.
Cool by me . . . I'm only about a transaction a month on Paypal. They scare the crap out of me aft3er getting zinged >$3,000 on a guitar sale and nearly having to sue to recover my funds.
Thank you to all the contributors, 35 in total now, including NRHS as our first recurring commercial contributor.
In round numbers and after the PayPal fees we have 15 recurring contributors totaling about $100/mo plus another $450 non-recurring by 20 other contributions. So including this month, May 2016, BadWeB is solvent for at least 4 months. The hope is that we can eventually achieve a full $200/mo recurring, plus enough to upgrade the forum.
