Well, the other day my Android took its final shit. Mid-phone call, it just started rebooting every five seconds. Take out the SIM card, it's fine. Soon as it picks up wifi...reboot. Something in the network side was forcing a reboot over and over.

So.

I took the plunge and got an iPhone 6.

I *swore* I wasn't going to, but the more I thought about it...it makes sense. It interfaces with all my sound company equipment; shares data, music, contacts, and files easily enough; and it's actively supported by the aftermarket (already have a tempered glass face and a body shell).

So...any tips on living with one of these things? I have found that ringtones are severely lacking, and you have to BUY THEM???? WTF is that all about? I'll just make my own with my recording equipment...!!

The charging cables are a hassle. The apple ones are pretty pricey, and don't last that long. The cheap ones are cheaper but still not that cheap, and most are junk. Which ticks me off, given that the USB cable your Android probably used is dirt cheap, highly reliable, and widely available.

It won't work with the bluetooth ECM modems because Apple has a proprietary stack and a lot of rules around the app store.

Everything about how they sync is completely non intuitive to me, and trying to pair one with windows 10 gets even weirder as the apple "stay on the path we dictate" rails conflict with the Microsoft "no, stay on the path *we* dictate" rails. So you are sitting the middle thinking "this is stupid".

But the IPhones are pretty durable if you keep at least a minimal case on them. And if you just stay on the apple narrow road installing updates and sticking to the app store, there are good paybacks in terms of stability, security, and reliability.

Joe

I've had an iPhone since they came out.
I have a 6 I got last year and love it.. well it's bigger than I like.

Lots of good apps and the App store is a little safer than Android.

Funny, I just got an 8" Android tablet to run ECMDroid and I am trying to learn its ecosystem now.

Is the 1765 number still good for you?
If so, I'll call.

I'm thinking very hard about upgrading everything I have over to Mac products...
once upon a time I was a Mac guy, and got away from it all. I've learned to live with my laptop and WinD'ohs Ate, even though it's SO clunky compared to Ubuntu and Firefox, which I used on my old, pre-owned laptop.

My GF and I both have new Android phones, and so far they're pretty aggravating. I had to wrestle with hers last nite- it had gone into fits with the message "Google is not available" over and over and over and OVER, every time you tried to do anything with it- turns out it was rooted in the voice to text function, which I had to turn off... she went to work this morning and I forgot to tell her, oh well. Maybe I should just be more patient and really give a try to learning to live gracefully with this SamDung phone, but I really just expect things to WORK with it... so far it's less intuitive, "smart" than the old used Google phone it replaced- the GF's phone is an earlier generation model, and even it seems to work more smoothly than my phone.

Everyone I know seems to have an Iphone, so there must be something to it. Once I get my finances pumped up a bit, we'll see.

Me too. It's slow and crappy, and the battery lasts about 30 minutes...but what can I expect for $40?

My wife is an iAddict and I am for anything but those.

Work recently changed carriers so I ended up with a S6. I really like it because the few issues I had with the S4 seem to be resolved. I was also very impressed recently with the frequency of Android updates pushed for some of the security issues. Still not iOS current but getting better.
Also, the fingerprint reader is AWESOME because IT dept pushes a security policy that locks the screen almost immediately so the 8 alphanumeric password was a huge pain.

All of these are relatively "new" compared to desktop/laptops/Windows, and some of you may remember that in the 90s it seemed a computer needed an upgrade or replacement every 2-4 yrs (I was upgrading my desktop in college almost every year).
My Android tablet is about 4 or 5 years old and looks like it is time to upgrade so I can get a newer OS or I would have to root/hack my current one. Leaning towards Windows but more than likely I will end up with another Android.

I also like to remind my wife she has an IT degree, working on her 2nd, and can't operate an Android device.
Endless entertainment. : )

I say go with whatever you like and fits in your budget.

I just spent about 5 hours unsnarling my wife's IPhone over the last two days, so while I still recommend them, I can't say they are painless.

My kids has a Samsung, I think I'd prefer it over my IPhone. He says he would rather have an IPhone, but he never had one so it may be a "grass is greener" thing. His Samsung does a lot of nice things the IPhone won't.

Dangit Reep- I guess I really need to dedicate a rainy day to a few tutorials and some research... I'd like to see if the OS on my GF's phone would migrate to mine- that's probably too much to ask, but...

Do tell- what will the Sam do that the Iphone won't?

The best feature (that it has had for a while) is an extreme power saving mode. I don't know what all it turns off, and the screen goes B&W instead of color, but it will keep running and stretch the remaining life of a dying battery from an hour to another 5 hours or something.

Apple just introduced a similar feature in the latest IOS update, but it's a dollar short (like 20% life improvement, not 500% life improvement) and a day late (Samsung has been doing this for years).

The samsung also supports more bluetooth devices.

And it has some other cool features, but I don't know how practical they are in real life. Like eyeball tracking (so you can scroll by just glancing up to the top of the device).

Like I said though, the IPhone works fine too. I'd probably prefer the Galaxy, but I'm fine with my company provided IPhone.

Hey Reep:
I just migrated to smart phone platform (LG)

did I understand you that there are blue tooth devices that with an "app" can be used to trouble shoot or adjust our FI bikes?

Please elaborate...

Oldog........ there is a free app called ECMDroid that you can use with a BlueTooth ECM module.

Yup, that. You can buy one of the pre-assembled modules, or make one of your own with about $20-$35 worth of parts. I leave it plugged into the bike all the time in case I ever need it. You could even hardwire it into the harness and save the cost of the deutsche connector.

I use mine with an older Nexus Android tablet. Works great, and nice to not be constantly trying to balance the netbook on the back of the seat of the bike while messing with stuff.

Over the past few years I've gone from just an iPhone user to a full suite of Mac products and I must say I love it.

iMac, airport express, apple tv, and an iPhone 5c. Everything comes out of the box and just works together instantly. I don't have to fiddle with everything. That's what I love is the instant gratification of their plug and play set up.

I am an apple advocate. At least currently.

Oh yeah! Keychain is sweet! i just used it to log in here. Having all my passwords in one place with encryption so I don't have to try 8 combos and get locked out before guessing the right one.

Finally, on a motorcycle note, Jessica and I swapped iCloud info. So when I leave for a ride I leave plotaroute.com open with my ride mapped out and then she can use the find my iPhone part of iCloud to see where I am. Makes me feel better too because I ride alone a lot and now I know that if I mess up and end up in a ditch I have a fighting chance of being found.

It all comes back to motorcycles!

I have to echo the "hook it up" aspect. I brought it home to my macbook, where I had zapped my contacts from the 'droid via bluetooth because it was the only way to get them out of it before it died. Turned on the phone, turned on the macbook, logged the phone into my home WiFi and AS I'm formulating the "how do I do this" thought...I FOUND MY CONTACTS ALREADY ON THE PHONE.

I have to say...THAT was pretty cool. That cloud thing, I suppose. I'm still learning the ins and outs, but so far it's been a relatively painless change.

I do miss my ringtones.

I also miss - how freakin' hard is this to do, Apple?? - the blinking LED alert light for messages, for when I'm not at the phone when a message comes in. The flash thing is neat...but doesn't seem to be an "until you retrieve the message" feature, only a "while the audible alert is sounding" feature.

So many smart features...so many missing pieces....

And I LOVE THE BATTERY LIFE. My droid would be at 20% before lunch. This thing...I can go - ACTUALLY GO - all day without having to charge it.

I did order five cables online though. $7.95 for all 5. We'll see how they do. For eight bucks? I'll take the chance. they'll work on the phone, and on my iPod touch.

I have been an Apple guy for something like 25 years.
All my daily stuff is Mac and I run XP on my Powerbook when I need to.

Back and forth with Dave and his Buelltooth dongle so I got a Nextbook Android 8".
It will make my Uly look like Froggys.... : )

Still learning it but it sure looks like fun to monitor sensors, log and tune on the fly.

Z

<edit> Hey Joe, I have an app called iToner and make my own ringtones.
My favorite is "I'm Going Home" by Ten years after.
Also have "Summer Nights" by Van Halen...

I have an I phone 6 for work, I don't have to lug a laptop around, one of these days I will learn how to print from it as soon as the tech nazi's get over their security concerns.

monoprice.com is the place to get charging cords for the i-phone on the cheap, just make sure you buy that flat screen TV mount you always wanted and extra HDMI cables to offset the shipping costs.

I though I was one of the last to get an iPhone. I refused to get one until they came out with the iPhone which had 4G so I got that. I really like the reliability of it and may be getting the 6S model this coming Friday when it comes out. I've used up my 16gig storage and want more storage or else I wouldn't be upgrading.

That was one reason I went 6 instead of 5. The 6 is physically larger than I wanted but it's a 64gb. The 5s are only out there in 16 now according to the guy. There are 128s and larger in the 6 I think but I don't run app-heavy at all. It's just iOS is turning into a hog so the bigger capacity is recommended.

Which kind of brings us full circle. The Iphones are nice, but why on earth should you have to buy an entirely new IPhone just to get another 32 gigs of memory, when a fast 32 gig micro SD card is about $20.

(The samsung has a micro SD slot)

Again, not saying don't go with the apple, it's a good choice. But it's a good choice with some really stupid limitations.

Reep..... That's the main reason why I don't buy any Apple or Sony products anymore, too much proprietary bullshit and stupid limits on what you can do with them. The non-expandable memory thing is just dumb on Apples part........... or maybe it's brilliant cause you have to buy a new phone to get more memory.

OTOH Love my Samsung Note 4.

Samsung S6 dropped the micro SD slot. 32 and 64 GB versions.

I actually read an article a few years ago that explained why many vendors were dropping the external storage. It has to do with managing a different file system and corruption when connecting to PC and/or accessing the card. Don't recall the specifics but I do remember it made logical sense.

Is music the reason for needing more storage?
I lost all my music a few years ago so I just stream mostly now.

So Samsung did it too huh? Figures. My Nexus tablet doesn't support it either.

It's not been an issue for me, but I've had to purge my wife's phone twice now to get her room for new pictures. She would have preferred to keep them on the phone, and if there was a memory card slot in the phone, I would have used it.

Apple wants me to use the apple cloud. I don't want to use the apple cloud. I lose.

I think it's been said above. But a custom ringtone should not sway you from your iPhone. A quick google search will show you how to do it

Two iPhones in and have never paid for music or a ringtone. But my phone is full of music and have had the same custom ringtone.

Good luck.
