Had a dream last night that Harley introduced an electric bike in the summer of 2014.

WUNDERBAR!!!

If/when it does happen, H-D will finally have figured out a way to stop their product from leaking oil!

Come on, someone had to say it... Many of you were already thinking it, no?

My Friday the 13th gift to you all,

Cycle World Magazine Online
Oct. 21 2014.

The Harley Davidson Motor Company has announced a recall on all 28 of the Electric Glide bikes sold in the US to fix the excessive oil consumption problem, and the issue with leaks from the gearbox oiling the rear tire.

There have been no fatalities or serious injuries since the Electric Glide only has a 15 mile range and requires 29 hours to fully charge it's battery pack. So few actual miles have accumulated.

The Proprietary H-D battery pack remains a mystery to the journalists at this magazine. Harley has denied it's full of recycled lead acid batteries, but the Electric Glide's weight of 1450 pounds and the non-removable or serviceable battery pack makes us wonder.

The battery cannot be serviced at the dealers, instead the whole bike is returned to the factory. H-D PR team says it was good enough for Fiskar.

Funny satire there. In reality, I've had '98 and '07 Sportsters and a '03 Dyna. All proved to be quite reliable and never had oil leak issues. Add my '06 XB12 to HD designs that have done well for me.

I do remember my brother buying a new '82 Sturgis and telling me that these new Harleys don't leak oil. That one proved itself to be a leaker in short order. They do eventually figure out how to do things right. In a few decades they may have models that can compete with today's Victory models!

I would have picked on the handling of the mythical 1450 pound bike, the range, and the horrible loss of life for those pinned underneath.......

but I just Had to jump on the oil leak tradition....

A while ago there was bitching about electric cars catching fire.

You are storing power. If it leaks or otherwise breaks, that power comes out uncontrolled.

Gasoline in a rusty tank, Batteries soaked in saltwater, Flywheels with bearing failure, Crystal Torsion storage and sharp blows, Antimatter magnetic Storage and power failures....

It's going to make a mess.

The higher the Energy Density per pound and/or Cubic inch, the more dangerous it is when containment fails.

Even I might protest a mini-black-hole total conversion plant on my planet.

And currently the energy density of batteries is pretty poor, and charge times long.

So an Electric H-D with a decent power to weight ratio, say as good off the line as a current wide Glide and Under 700 Pounds, will take you a tiny fraction of the distance as the gas version.

This will improve with better batteries. Someday,

The model you bought will NOT be upgradable..... look to hot rod shops to stick new more powerful batteries in older cars. A '15 Buick Electro with '22 GMC truck batteries?

They are going to trademark "Sturgis"??!!

I can think of a certain crappy little South Dakota town who may take exception to that....

I thought "Llivewire" was the marketing name for the new fly-by-wire control setup....

Actually, I am wrong - it also is internal name for the HD electric motorcycle project, according to the stock ticker I was just looking at.

Tough to make an Electric bike "Sound like a Harley". I am going to go into the Electric Bike drag pipe business....

HD has built 61 of them for the tour. It's not a launch tour, it's a "let's feel them out and see if they'll buy it" tour.

No plans have been made for mass production as of yet.

Personally, I think it's a publicity stunt. HD had to find a way to look mainstream and modern, this bike was made for Avengers 2. I'm surprised they didn't call it the iBike.

It didn't occur to them, because the decision makers don't

The bike was not built for Avengers 2. HD has been working on it for a few years. The design was influenced by the people that had previously worked at/with Buell.

I am still waiting to check out the V-ROID based 500s and 750s...but this looks like a nifty motorcycle. Even if the association has ended, I'm pleased to see Erik's influence on the US motorcycle industry.

Of course, if that bike is a hybrid...Guess who will be licensing some patents from Erik ...

If my local dealer gets one - I probably won't be able to find it among all the baggers with ape hangers. Olde skool image isn't going to be able to sell bikes like that one.

My thoughts on the Harley e-bike;

Nice looking bike, but it has no range... Until they can get electric bikes to match the range and have a recharge time of a gas fill up they just aren't practical.

"My thoughts on the Harley e-bike;

what is the range part based on?
Apologies, Ive not seen any specs/details on the bike which includes range

I do agree that the charge time eliminates ebikes from my life at this point

I haven't seen it on paper, but on TV it said 53 miles, which is a drop in the bucket compared to most other E-bikes.

http://www.wired.com/2014/06/harley-davidson-livew ire/

quote:

Harley isn’t saying much about the drivetrain beyond saying the bike uses a lithium-ion battery with a range of 53 miles. It charges in 3.5 hours at 220 volts. Assuming the bike has a 3.3 kw charging system like other electric motorcycles, some back-of-the-envelope math suggests the LiveWire uses a 10 kilowatt-hour pack.
