Watching MX races on CBS and all of the sudden Erik pops up on my TV to tell me Amsoil is good stuff!

Yeah, I saw it too. Before they showed Erik, they showed a picture of an engine. I think it was the the RX's engine. My first thought was, how weird, that sure looks like an EBR engine. My second thought was how especially weird, since I was watching super cross racing. Then Erik came on...how very very great!!!

I hope Erik was paid, big $$$, for admitting to a design or specification defect in his pride & joy engine.
And that only Amzoil could save it from a "redesign."

LOL.

Where do people think engineering problems come from? They come from overcoming one barrier, making progress, and hitting the next barrier.

Where do you think engineering solutions come from? They come from, well, whoeverthehellcansolvethefreakingproblem. Then you integrate them, make progress, and find the next obstacle.

It's a 185 HP twin with unprecedented efficiency (50 MPG) and best in class across the rev range power (not just peak HP). Of course its going to run into some challenges.

Reep, True.
But that commercial does not make me feel warm and fuzzy with regard to the purchase of a new EBR moto.

"Warm and fuzzy" is for hand-wringing pussies. It's a frigg'n 185 HP Superbike.

Sorry if that's too harsh. You needed a friendly man-slap.

True it is a high hp engine.
And, the first time I saw the commercial (not here), I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

In the commercial, Erik, makes it sound like the problem is cured with the exclusive use of Amzoil, and no further development will be pursued.

I had similar concerns about the message this ad sent initially; but on further thought, I've concluded:

1.) The commercial is brief, so several points of data necessary to fully analyze meaning aren't available.

2.) Erik's speaking WRT the racing version of the 1190, likely tuned and operated at what approaches the limits of design durability. Bikes in street tune and ridden at quasi-legal speeds will never experience the level of mechanical stress I believe he's referring to.

3.) Do EBR team riders and bikes wear the Amsoil name displayed prominently? Yep. A major sponsor rates a powerful endorsement. Just be thankful they aren't sponsored by the little blue pill company.

I'm just tickled shiate-less that EBR is building, racing, and selling bikes in 2014!

I tend to agree with that. At the same time, while it's a great commercial for Amsoil, I'm not sure that it's a great one for EBR. The mere fact that there's a hint of a weak spot in the 1190 isn't what EBR needs. It's not what any company needs. MANY people will not understand the implications of what EB said. They simply hear that they have a flexy crank that is on the edge of failure.

I didn't get that at all. My takeaway was that twins with long strokes have certain inherent issues, and rather than redesigning an engine (perhaps with 4 cylinders instead of 2) using the correct oil alleviated the problems with running a big twin at high RPM.

Oil is important.

My TDI requires a specific grade of oil that isn’t generally available. I have to order it online, or get it from a dealer. This is because the final stage of fuel pressurization is performed by cam driven mechanical pumps, one per cylinder. This means that each cam lobe has to be narrower in order to accommodate the additional lobes on the cam. If you don't use the correct oil, the cam lobes will wear off. Even high quality synthetics like Mobil 1 are not sufficient. You have to use VW spec oil. Castrol and Valvoline make it. Although I believe Redline meets the spec as well, they only sell Valvoline and Castrol at the dealer. Does this mean that my engine was poorly designed? I don't think so. Every engine requires a certain grade of oil. The one in the 1190RX does too. Big deal.

1.) The commercial is brief, so several points of data necessary to fully analyze meaning aren't available.

Good point, but that means the commercial is not good because it is not clear. That leaves you guessing as to if there is, and what, the actual problem might be with EBR's engines.

I did not hear that clarified in the commercial either.

It sounded more like a conversation that should be kept between EBR's and Amsoil's engineers rather than a "for public" commercial sales point. Makes Amsoil sound like "snake oil" and EBR like "problematic".

No offense intended but, is no one previewing the writing in or of these advertisements? There should have been some questions asked and answered(by someone other than engineers).

This is one of those times I dislike my opinion.

Oh, by the way, the star of the commercial did his TV star part well. It is great to see EB back in view.

I'm with Hoot on this one.... Sorry Vern!

its like watching the ding dongs on Gas Monkey Garage using O'reilley's generic oil for breaking in a new motor....
They are shocked when its spun a bearing and they have "gold in that there oil"

good oil goes a long way

I agree with what you are saying. The problem is that many folks are going to be clueless about engine design issues, especially specifics of twins. He devoted about five words to issues that could easily be an entire chapter in a book. He won't have the chance to expand on this for most who see this commercial. Like I said, I think it's a far better spot for Amsoil than EBR. It's a shame they couldn't have come up with something that was better for both partners.

Personally, if I were looking at that purchase, I don't think it would put me off. I would never be putting any significant time on the bike near it's limits. I can't even do that with my XB without getting into trouble. Mine would be babied so much I don't think it would ever have issues unless there was a real serious design flaw. Of course, at the same time, I don't see the need to spend that kind of cash for performance that I can't reasonably use. Clearly, not everyone thinks the way I do. I hate to think about the person who is going to have problems that come from extended running of that bike near it's limits on the street.

What he actually said was twins with their long stroke engines are hard on their crank shafts,

when reviewing with R&D at Amsoil they said issues they were seeing may have been oil related,

so they solved the issue with better oil

the 1125 crank and probably the 1190 as well is really beefy, but the automotive style bearings wont handle poor oiling as the crank journals float on oil,
crappy dirty oil will kill most any engine, the oil specs are the MINIMUM specified properties that the oil must have to be labeled for and used in a particular service,

and by using better oil he could skip having to solve the problems associated from racing / high power operation, and inferior oil..

common in business all of the time its the American way,

I get it. I'd much rather see this commercial, as brief as it is, conveying the message about better oil solving a potential problem than having to listen to a couple more minutes of lawyer talk explaining harmful side effects or drawbacks like they do in those heart pill, viagra, etc. commercials.

If you want an appreciation of how good Amsoil is . . go find that technical report on their website. curl up in a comfy chair and read it.

It's amazing stuff.

Commercials are a bad virtual venue from which to derive factual and actionable information, Their purpose is to pique interest and discussion. Unless of course . . . Mercedes . . really take flight and soar through the clouds at warp speed.

Jim old buddy, I'll agree to disagree with you.
Insert type bearings on a con rod by nature will withstand much more abuse than a needle as their plating will absorb many impurities and continue on.

Your X1's bore is 3.51/89.18mm and a 3.81/96.77mm stroke.

The 1190 is hardly what's consider a long stroke engine with a bore of 4.17"/106 mm and a stroke of 2.66"/67.5mm.

IMO if it won't run and survive on the street or track on a name brand oil that's available over the counter at any convenience/parts store it sure won't do any better with Amsoil.

It's an oil add. Of course it talks about how great oil is.

Amsoil kept EBR racing when nobody else did. Please, everyone, shut up and say "thank you". ; )

Nobody who is serious about buying an 1190RS or 1190RX is going to change their mind because Erik Buell did an add for Amsoil saying using it solves problems.

No problem James, you are correct on the bearings,
I will argue with you on the fact that the engine will last longer on better quality oil,
the '25 uses "journal" bearings
and better oil with better additives, should in theory help the engine withstand adverse conditions, or just last longer....

I expect that 1190 engine is harder on its main and rod bearings, than the 1125 as more power is being generated at peak and throughout the range,

Ymmv Glad to see Erik in the news,

Dude! It's Christmas.....we are family.....what do you expect?
