Hootowl that Honda already has serious rust and is just one Michigan winter away from having the fenders come off, same with the other one you can see the big spot of rust just in front of the right rear tire, and no doubt with that fuzzy far away picture they took, the other side is worse. I'm not trying to sound jaded, but I don't like to spend money on cars, and it can be a long process around here to find a decent one,the last misrepresented car I went to look at was at a Honda dealer in bay city,2000 nissan sentry, with 34k looked good on the pictures, salesman said it was in real good shape so I drove 250 miles one way down there, rust thru the one rocker panel, and rust bubbles under the paint on the fenders.Nice real nice. |

Yeah, saw that. Probably why they're so cheap. Cheap was one of the criteria. My understanding is that he wants a car to commute in that he won't have to worry about getting stolen in the cesspool city where he works. Rust is a given on old cheap cars in the mid west. |

Gbackus, Rockauto.com has great prices, quick shipping and you don't have to deal with the "special" button pusher behind the parts counter. |

"Rust is a given on old cheap cars in the mid west." Another reason I like the Saturn S series. plastic door and quarter panels don't rust. (or dent) I think some of the body panel materials vary by year, but the only metal on the body of my 2000 is the trunk, roof, and hood. |

how are the saturn sl2s on gas mileage? found a used one in great shape, $900, manual transmission. I know the sohc coupes seem to be the king of gas mileage. but how are the dohc sedans? |

Just remembered that my best bud once had a IIRC, Chevy Geo Metro, which ran a 3 cylinder motor, and got GREAT mileage... he's long regretted selling it, especially now since his job moved and he spends 2 hours commuting every day. I remember it to be a decent car, no real power, but fine for its intended job. Plus, someone in my neighborhood has one that's a convertible (yes, factory), been wanting to track her down and make an offer... might get with Vern one day if I had that thing and shove a Wankel motor in it, along with some good suspension bits. Ahhh, gotta cherish your dreams! Also, weirdly enough, I'd worked for a woman years ago who had of all things a Yugo- dang thing burned oil like you'd expect, build Q was CHEEEP, but it just kept going and going. They built factory 'verts of those too, REALLY want one of those. When she got rid of it, I made sure to strip the horn out, still have it- that thing is LOUD! Carry on, post up some good beater pics or links! |

How long to the frames last on those saturns? Or floor pan or whatever structural thing lives under there. One shocker I found out was the delorean with its fancy stainless body actually has a normal steel frame and they do rot out. They sell stainless frames for those unwilling to let their deloreans go! I always fantasized of making a stainless 1977 Dodge van. (At least when I was wearing out drills and poprivets adding patches to mine) |

Dual cam saturns still get decent mileage. A few less then the single cams. For comparison my singles average 40ish and my duals average 35ish As for the floor pans, all of mine have been solid except for one 94 that I patched the passenger rear floorboard. |

I had a SOHC and a DOHC. Not that much difference between the two actually, either in performance or economy. DOHC has more top end if you want it, but if you don't use it they feel the same and get the same MPG. With a really worn 165k motor and probably more than one bad coolant temp sensor (there are two, they fail) I was getting low twenties in city driving, high twenties highway. I generally wrung the things neck, I could have done better. |

My SC2 burned oil from about 80k miles still I sold it still running well at 170k miles. I bet the white one burns it too, and the seller just wasn't as complete in their disclosure. We sold the SL1 at 50k running perfectly (should have sold the SC2 instead and kept the SL1). The sedan will be a lot more comfortable to get in and out of, and more practical all around, and perform just as well. I'd go with the white one. |

I had an SL2 4 door with a 5-speed manual that got 38 mpg.I would still have it but it had a shifting problem that I was unable to diagnose. I currently have an '02 Saturn L200 4 door,4-cyl auto, that gets 29 mpg. |

100k more? Probably not, but maybe. An SL1 might give you a better chance (less to go wrong and a less stressed engine and likely less aggressive drivers). I've spent my life trying to hit the $1000 for 10,000 mile car metric. That's my budget, and I try and get as much car as possible (acquisition costs with normal maintenance). It's a hard target to hit at the end of the day, but it can be done. You are going for 10 times that, that is a *very* ambitious goal. |
