Too busy counting down the minutes. I've only jumped from ~12,000 feet. I can't imagine another 108,000 and reaching Mach 1. That's absurd. Best of Luck Felix.

What is really insane is that the current record was set 50 years ago!!!! 50 years ago, reached Mach .09 and lived to tell about it.

Meh. He's in a pressurized suit with oxygen. I don't see what all the hoopla is about.

I find it odd that they're claiming he will break the sound barrier. He won't. He may exceed the speed of sound at sea level but not the speed of sound at whatever altitude he at. He's not pointy enough, and he won't have enough inertia to push through the wall of air that is no longer getting out of his way as he falls through it. The air will slow him down as it thickens. Terminal velocity for our shape is about a buck 20 down where we can breathe. Not sure what it is way up there, but it is less than the speed of sound at that altitude. I'm not holding my breath for any sonic booms.

Current Status:

We're on a weather hold due to winds at 700ft - the top of our giant balloon. Next update expected soon. Launch not possible before 7:30 MDT

Semantics again, if you're going faster than sound where sound can't travel, does that count?

I mean theoretically most of us are travelling faster than sound as we sit on our spinning ball, the surface of which (at the equator) is moving at about 1000 mph relative to a static point in space.

I'm a doubter, so I read that page & I clicked the video link. There's a lot of "if's" & "possibly's" in there & at the end a "well we don't really know."

He's got bigger nuts than me to do it, so fair play to the fella, I'll take my hat off to him.
Whether he actually achieves the project aims or not.

Come on Hoot. There's lots to be learned. Eventually we may be able to do a stunt where a guy in a space suit attempts re-entry from space!

Sifo that's pretty close to what's happening. 'space' starts a ways higher up yes but that's some very rare air he's jumping from.

No. It's not. Re-entry, even from sub-orbital speeds is a whole different set of problems.

Well that's kind of the point isn't it? It's as you say "some very rare air" so I can't really see how the speed of sound, which is measured at sea level, equates.

I suppose it's more showy to say "Man breaks speed of sound in free fall" than it is to say "Man goes 'kin fast in free fall."

Anyhow, all this begs another question.

If he does make it past the speed of sound, will he be able to hear himself say "Oh Shi..." when it all goes tits-up?

So if we're not learning from it then it shouldnt be done?

Back in the 70's and 80's when I skydived we used to talk about this over pizza and beer. I thought it was cool then and I still do now.

As far as being important to mankind as a whole. It will raise the maximum altitude of permissible bailout altitude from 100,000 feet the altitude just below what Colonel Kittinger jumped from in 1960, to something just under what Mr. Baumgartner jumps from. The ceiling that is presently in place is there because no one has tested a higher altitude. This becomes that test.

Beats me . . . . and I'm a huge fan of science.

I, at this point, find in interesting in the same vein I do bizarre motorcycle jumps.

I hope there is some science to it and I'll be at Pupin this afternoon . . eager to see if there's any hoopla. They're smart enough to understand it.

I've also got a call in to my Uncle who's staying with my Mom for a month . . . if anyone knows the science behind this . . .he will.

the speed of sound varies based on temps more than anything else. so yes he can go as fast as and possibly faster than the speed of sound. that's the thing this is an experiment based on theory that is expanding on the experiments conducted by Capt/Col Kittenger via the Man High and the Excelsior projects. As pointed out one of the benefits is a new bail out ceiling. additionally the new suit he's wearing and some other things such as the bio metric capture equipment and for the jumpers out there new chutes and chute techniques.

If you're going 10,000 MPH in a vacuum, are you breaking the sound barrier? You are certainly exceeding the speed of sound in air, but are you encountering the aerodynamic issues you would experience in air? Nope. There's a reason supersonic aircraft are pointy at the front. Aerodynamics change radically when the air isn't getting out of the way like it does at subsonic speed. If this guy hits the 'barrier' he'll be in serious trouble. Since he won't have thousands of pounds of thrust at his disposal to push him through that barrier, it is unlikely that he'll be able to get there. 9.8 M/s^2 only works in a vacuum. In reality, in an atmosphere, there is significant drag. Where there is no air or thin air, he'll certainly exceed the speed of sound at sea level, but it's really not the same thing at all.

Like diving into water vapor instead of a pool can't be called swimming.

If we don't learn anything, I couldn't care less. We, as a people, used to have balls. We used to do daring and outrageous things just to do them.

The speed of sound is X. If he breaks that speed, he has broken the "speed of sound". Without air, he isn't braking the sound barrier.

This chart only goes up to 105,000 feet, but following the general trend 690 seems plausible.

There is air air at 100,000 feet just not enough to support life it is not a vacuum. Fact is there is air above 120,000 feet or the balloon wouldn't work. They have done a poor job of telling us at what altitude he will exceed the speed of sound probably because there not sure. Reading there site they say from 35 to 40 seconds after release. Jump altitude is 120,000 feet and things accelerate downward at 32 feet per second squared. I don't know how to figure the math but some where between 80,000 and 90,000 feet he should exceed Mach 1.

Why are we doing this speaking broadly as the human race. BECAUSE WE CAN.

Since he will exceed the speed of sound at approximately the same altitude as the SR 71 flew this is not a vacuum.

No, it's not a vacuum.

You know, the space station is technically still in air. The drag slows it down and the orbit decays. The shuttle has to push it up higher when it docks.

Do we get all excited about the astronauts breaking the sound barrier while not in a craft when they go EV? Nope. Why? Because going that fast that high is not the same as going that fast in any semblance of a breathable atmosphere. There simply is no comparison.
