Hey Jim... how is the poo? We are feeding Eukanuba now and their stool is pretty firm and easy to picked up.
My wife and I walk the backyard 2 or 3 times a day to make sure no one is running/stepping in dooty and then coming into the house....

In my best "Stewie" voice....

"Whats their poo like man?"

LOL! Here we are talking about poo. For the most part pretty solid, but we do feed wet food mix in the mornings. I do sometimes wonder if something that causes such "solid" waste may be too much on thier systems causing blockage. Thats the reason we mix in the mornings just to give a little indifference to the mix.u4euh

I've found that the better food does mean less poo and less poo is a good thing.

We feed our crew Blue Wilderness. They like it. They are healthy. Even gave my roly poly 13 year old a new spring in her step.
We have been using it well over a year now.

Had to take our hairy child to the vet last nite, she was having some seriously violent sneezing fits. Found out she's got a sneeze button on the left side of her nose. Vet says she will be fine in a week or so, gave her some meds.

Anyone have good advice for restraining a pitmix thats about 1yr old that keeps going after smaller dogs at the park? (free reining huge park with 5-15 dog possibly)
Everything happened in about 20-30 sec to a min. (it happened so fast I could be wrong)

A pit mix kept following then slowly bumping into my much smaller dog and kinda pushing her away.. my dog would snap back at the pitmix,..and the pitmix kept following her and would get more and more aggressive... but never using it's mouth at all but trampling over my dog, they were moving pretty fast in a small area, (my dog backing away kinda and the pit just walking over her... then my dog yelped ... and the pitmix owner started saying "get her" loudly a few times which made the pit go after my dog more.. but the owner was actually speaking to ME because she couldn't stop it.

Anyways, I wasn't that worried until I heard my dog yelp, I didn't see what happened but the instant I had a close enough chance... I dove from behind/above the pitmix and kinda tackled and squeezed her tight with my arms and used my legs too... then I rolled over with her all the time thinking my dog was in it's mouth and I was next... (yea, I admit I closed my eyes for a millisecond) I opened them and immediately looked to see if her mouth was empty and thankfully it was and my dog was 4ft away looking ok. I think I shocked pitmix into submission because she was happily laying on her back looking like she was waiting for a belly rub like nothing happened. It was scary and funny.

But thinking back about it, when the pitmix first came over to us, she came to me and leaned on me kinda hard and I pet her kinda rough and she seemed to love it. Was THAT a mistake? Was she pressing on ME then moved onto my dog?? I suspect that is it, but also think the owners weren't too good of trainers and/or the dog wasn't ready because it seemed to be alittle over a year old.

Anyways,.. this was my 2nd encounter with this particular pit mix and she did the leaning and pushing the 1st time we met too... but there were alot more dogs there to distract her (8-10). This time there was only 3 so it was easier to focus on my dog.

What to do if big dog attacks my little pumpkin? "IF" something were to happen,.. would it be similar to car accident... getting owner info for med bills or whatnot? I also want to be able to keep my cool too and not do anything stupid with a weapon. I was thinking mace would be a good restraining tool. (Alot of things crossed my mind)

99% of the dogs that go to this park are not aggressive, my dog has played with and gets along with all the dogs we encounter there and other parks. the last time we were there she buddied up with a huge male Great Dane they truly were the ODD COUPLE!! It was hilarious!

Torq decided to chase after a critter a while back. Critter goes under fence. Torq follows....as far as he can. Torq stands up, and is now stuck. Seriously, took my wife 20 minutes to get him to relax enough to allow her to push his head to the ground to back him out!

Milo, on the other hand...he just like the wind in his face : )

X - get the owner of the pit mix to restrain their dog. Aggressive dog should not be roaming a dog park

Our dog parks are divided into two sides.
Big dogs on one side
Little dogs on the other.
Few weeks ago, a woman with a very small dog decided to take her pup into the large dog park. From what I understand, there were no other dogs in the small dog park for hers to play with..... it was a fatal mistake. A husky mix picked it up like a toy and shook it... That is why I wont take either of my pitties to a dog park. I would hate for them to hurt someones pooch

the pit mix shouldn't be at the dog park. PERIOD

We have one near my house like that too. But this park above has like 4-5 huge fields with woods with trails separating each field and a couple streams in there too. I think I walked one route and it was about 1.6 miles. It is really an awesome place. Like I say,... 99.999% of the time all the dogs are freaking having a BLAST!

Nice looking fence, Mark! I'm about to put up a chainlink, gonna research ideas about "prettifying" it- the tiki torches look like a good idea. I'm planning on putting up bluebird boxes on every other post...

Can't wait to see our dawgies running free, ESPECIALLY the Basenji- he's FAAASST!

She is a hot bundle of energy, has my Great Pyrenees on his toes! She's already herding him around the house, and fully housebroken at only 8 weeks!

digital,
Take everything I saw with a grain of salt because I'm not a dog trainer or expert, just a guy who's had a few dogs.
It sounds like from your story that your dog wasn't really in drastic danger. It sounds like a case of a hyperactive dominate dog and an smaller dog that got scarried. Happens alot. We have a pit mix that gets into a hyper-dominate state which can cause trouble. In one case it was like yours where he got too over-bearing on a smaller dog and the smaller dog bit him in the face. I seperated them and they were fine other than a gash on Buddy's nose. It was the closest thing to a fight Buddy's been in and he got his butt whooped by a little puppy.
They pit-mix's owners need to work on that puppy's dominance and excitement issue, just like we've had to do with Buddy. The biggest issue is excitement, which is difficult in puppies, because that makes everything happen really quickly. It's not that she's an aggressive dog, she just doesn't have doggy manners... I say that because if the pit-mix were an aggressive dog that snap from your dog would have been the start of a bad fight. If she had better manners she would have then left your dog alone.

On your end be aware of your dog, it sounds like you are, and try to keep her away from over-excited and dominate dogs.

If your dog does get into a fight with another dog try to talk to the other owner and exchange information afterwards. My dane got bit at the dog park by a little terrier when she was still a pup (a giant pup) and I let the guy leave the park without getting any info. I didn't realize until he was gone that the dog had put a deep tear in Kelee's neck that required stiches.
If your dog is seriously hurt and the other dog was clearly being aggressive then you might want to get numbers from witnesses.
And lastly be very careful seperating a dog fight. If it was a real honest-to-goodness fight you can end up seriously hurt. I got deep painful puncture wounds when a tried to seperate a cat and a dog... the cat bit the piss outta me! A really aggressive dog would do way worse.
If you see this scenario building up again take action but remain calm. If you get too worried and stressed your dog (and/or the other dog) can react to that and become stressed and defensive and more likely to fight.

I suggest watching the Dog Whisperer. Some of his dog-psychology takes the fun out of dogs (like the fact dogs are NOT people : ( ) but it really works.

An email I got from a friend today...

I got a new dog to guard our house. It was a little more than I thought I should pay but I think when word gets out we'll be a relatively crime free neighborhood.

The nice part is he is a year old and already fully trained. For your safety you might want to call the house from the driveway and in the safety of your car!
