East Lansing PD is using BMW also now. This really backfired on H-D(spit) |

A State Police analysis tried to be kind to the Harleys, calling them a "capable vehicle for parade and ceremonial use."

I'm so shocked! Tractors are useful as tractors. People that want a Buick will buy a Buick. Cops don't want tractors OR Buicks. |

Do police bikes have to meet emissions? Hello 200 HP EBR police special |

I noticed that a police official in Aurora, CO that gave a statement about the psycho shooter out there, did his statement in front of a fleet of BMW bikes. I can understand that HD may not want to be involved in sport bikes. It's a shame that they can't keep up with the market they choose to focus on however. |

Do police bikes have to meet emissions? Yes. The police here use Harleys, BMWs, and Hondas. There are even a few of the old kz1000s still kicking around. The Honda is the one that seems to be gaining popularity the fastest though. |

Why do you write "(spit)" each time you type HD/Harley/etc? |

Don't discount HD. No other motorcycle is better at showcasing a clothing line. |

I don't fault HD for closing Buell. Look at HD and then look at EBR. Do they really belong together? From what I gather, after the closing Erik was more concerned about the employees and their families than anything else, and it sure sounds like the band is getting back together. I don't hate HD. I've got no room for that emotion. |

From what I gather, after the closing Erik was more concerned about the employees and their families than anything else, and it sure sounds like the band is getting back together. I don't hate HD. I've got no room for that emotion. It was a tough pill to swallow when Buell was shut down. I can only imagine how it went down for Erik and the elves. As much as HD and Buell don't go well together, it's worth realizing that without HD, as ridiculous as much of their "input" into the Buell models may have been, without HD Erik would most likely have just been another in a very long list of failed motorcycle manufacturers. Now people are seeing Erik's vision and beginning to understand it, and Erik has a much better understanding of the changes involved in putting together a fledgling company that has to not only deal with building a very complex bit of machinery, but also deal with government motor vehicle regulations, and everything else that must be done when you start trying to sell a vehicle. Designing a motorcycle from the ground up is the easy part that many others have done through history. |

The Uly was never any serious competition to any of the police model bikes. Hate all you want but the HDs are a better choice for LEO work, unless you are doing a LOT of high speed stuff... Rock on Erik!! |

depends on where you were selling them. I sold three cop ulys to the local County Sheriff - had to steal allocation from cross state demos to get them the contract. They LOVE them for back woods party patrol. I had a tribal contract set to roll too for the next year when word came down. it was a tough gut chuck - it was the beginning of a spiralling hell that I have yet to recover from Took a lump when they killed the Griffin... when Buell closed - all the fun got sucked out of it - All of it. and the profits went with it. I hope Hero / EBR give rise of the Phoenix and the Griffin makes it to the showroom - soon. |

Not an issue unless you plan on outrunning them at the Dragon, or some such. Most pursuits take place on open highways and a ZX-14R, Hayabusa, or S1000RR would handily outrun a hypothetical 1190RS-P. On the other hand, you'd be more likely to turn yourself into a half mile long red smear on the asphalt, too... |

that report is so inaccurate. An Electra Glide will reach 100 in about 13 seconds. Not 31 like the article says and they are capable of over 120 mph as well. |

Buelliedan, there is a PDF in the article with all the numbers. The Harleys tested had their asses handed to them by BWM and Kawi, and not so much by Victory. |

If you want to see where HD Motor Sales tombstone is planted find and read the comparison done in California. I **think** it was about 5 or 6 years ago. That was their death knell. |

Working in a BMW dealer here in Florida, over the last year we have had many of the local county PD's looking at the BMW. The big complaint here is they baking on the HD's. I've also been told by them they are not allowed to patrol the interstates on the HDs. Court, you better believe I'm giving copies of the California report to all of them... Griffin... the 'official' name moniker of The Rooster - or so goes the rumor the uber light dirty Mx with Buell tech trilogy and a nasty powerful super thump in the cradle really hoping the EBR/HERO duo will bring the 450 out in a DS or SM format Salivating like Pavlov's Dog at the prospects |

A 2011 Street Glide tested by MotorcycleUSA did 0-60 just under 6 seconds and hit 91mph in 14.79. http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/112/10477/Motorcycle -Article/2011-Harley-Davidson-Street-Glide-Compari son.aspx Which is pretty close to what the tests in the article state. I'm not sure why it takes an additional 15 seconds for the HD to get up to 100mph. Here's an article from 2006 with test results for the Electra and Road King. 0-100 is 20.4 and 17.6. Top speed 104 and 107. http://www.hendonpub.com/resources/articlearchive/ details.aspx?ID=903 Still terribly slow compared to the BMW. (Message edited by notpurples2 on July 24, 2012) |

The police bikes are likely heavier, but an extra 15 seconds heavier? |

Seems the Harleys just get slower every year. 2008 0-100 25-26 seconds vs 10.1 sec for BMW. http://www.officer.com/article/10249308/michigan-s tate-police-2008-model-year-vehicle-tests?page=2 |

What is the "california report"? |

The California report I used to have copies of was a break down of the operating costs of several police models based on the bikes in their fleet. It included HDs, BMW and one of the Japanese bikes. The cost cost per mile was significantly higher for the Harleys vs the other brands. |

I think a Hyabusa can outrun a typical chopper. Funny Hyabusa story: My uncle has had a pilots license and a Cessna and later a tri-pacer. He came down with diabetes and the license was taken from him. Recently, he upgraded his 1978 CBR750 to a Hyabusa. That bike is faster than any plane he ever flew Also, FAAAR cheaper to own! |
